The only chaingun I don't really like is the Doom one, it's disappointingly weak for a weapon of its kind. Frankly, I would have preferred if they had just kept pic related as your machine gun, its looks fit its power level better while still looking decently big and brawny. On the other hand, the chaingun looks disproportionate: far too big and bulky. I mean, each one of its barrels is thicker than those of the SSG!

That doesn't have a distinct enough silhouette compared to the other weapons. The chaingun works better from a design standpoint in that way.

In a game where demons teleport from hell in space and you kill them with a space chainsaw, I'm not sure the logic behind the guns appearance matter so much.

Other people seem to agree with you on the weakness front though. Most of the first dehacked edits were just to speed up the chaingun.

D44M wasn't perfect by any means but at least you can tell when you can do a glory kill.
People complained about it because it was too "cinematic". They last like 2 or seconds at best.
BD takes much longer to do a glory kill and it's far more risky.You need an health bar addon if you want to do it on anyone above a Pinky or a Cacodemon.

Also there are some people complaining that Eternal wasn't gory enough. It's still unfinished but so far the gore looks good but they're saying that like BD is some sort of masterpiece of gore while Sgt. Mark had the brilliant idea of putting Turok-like blood pools which look awful.
He also gets all the praise for the blood,while it was actually Mike12/Hdoomguy the one who made it(at least the first versions)

I've made a couple of models, that one's the 'least cute' of the bunch. I haven't done much with them gameplay wise as most of my time was spent fiddling with materials and shaders trying to do what I can to get 3D models to not look shit in doom. Thought of a 'storyline' element to Doom.

So Satan and is fallen angel buddies got kicked out of heaven but never stopped believing they could do everything God could do, but better. For example, Lucifer always was irritated that God made humans all soft, slow, but other animals fast and tough. Lucifer got kicked out of heaven after a failed coup.

Thousands of years later, humans become very powerful, manipulating the laws of physics to the very edge and even creating simple life with science. The fallen angels were inspired.

So, like God made humans in his image, Satan, being the rebellious, prideful rebel decided he could make mortal, sentient beings in his own image. An image like he thought humanity should be, sentient, but as tough as mortally possible, with access to magic- exploited loop-holes in God's systemic universe. Using their vast knowledge of the inner-workings of the universe and of life, they began their own version of Creation.. The other important fallen angels helped out, making creatures in their own image, with mixed results. Some made mortals as a joke, the Mancubus was made out of mockery of the human Sin of Gluttony, in his own image, the form it chose during the War of the Heavens.
They existed on a planet, randomly formed almost close to the conditions life would form, but Satan annexed it. For centuries they bred and fought one another, built cities from green marble and bones... until the day the UAC opened a door into their world...


tl;dr, the enemies in Doom are not actually demons, but satan-worshipping aliens created by them. Why you can murder them with a chainsaw.

The total insane pace and exhilaration of the game takes my mind entirely off of reality and makes me focus on the game and nothing but the game. Nope. Even the best programmers I know would tell you that that's a losing game from the start. It would almost be quicker, in this case, to just work on a different port from another codebase rather than try to actually fix GZDoom as someone who has no experience on the code. In a way, it was.
Ever since the original Doom released, a company called Wizardworks sold compilation discs of basically usermade .wads grabbed off the internet. They did this with basically no quality control at all, and with nobody's permission (and given how more than a few of the .wads contained rips from copyrighted materials, it was all kinds of shady and illegal).

iD resented this, it looked bad, and cut into their sales, so that's when they started to look into publishing more content for Doom, to show those crooks how it was done, and also to give players something much better to chew on. They also wanted it to be more challenging than the original Doom and Doom 2, since there had been complaints for a while that the game is a little easy (this was why Episode 4 was made to be much tougher).
They looked around, and saw these guys called Team TNT, who were making their own megawad, a full 32 level replacement for Doom 2, and it was almost finished. iD Software hit them up with an offer to publish TNT commercially, if they also provided another 32 level megawad to go with it. The other megawad would be Plutonia, made by Milo Casali, and Dario Casali (who would go on to make maps for Valve), and with the intention to be extra hard.

Together, TNT and Plutonia was published commercially as Final Doom.
Personally, I think it's pretty good, TNT is really cool, if a little bit rough around one of the edges, and Plutonia as well, while giving people something extra tough to chew on.

Anyone play Freedom? I finished the phase 1 Iwad. They're really decent vanilla-type levels and look good., but they're also huge af, full of goddamn switch hunts and it's 90% shotgun guys and imps. Also every enemy is deaf and you get ambushed at point-blank by shotgun guys every single room.

Playing the phase2 iwad and I already noticed it's less frustrating.

The sprites for some enemies look like shit, (the mancubus is awful) but all the wall and floor textures are objectively better looking than Doom2.

Also anyone know how to play custom wads on Freedom with linux and GZDoom? I haven't tried it yet, I downloaded Stronghold and have no clue how to get it to run with Freedoom if it's even possible.

Posting this because it's reached a point where it's mostly does what it's supposed to do.

tl;dr load these before (or after sometimes, I dunno) a Doom gameplay mod with Heretic to get at least some of the fuckers to play with Heretic.

You can pick and chose which parts of weapons, pickups and monsters you need to go with mods because shit's not consistent across all mods.

t;ldr tl;dr It fucking runs GMOTA in Heretic, mostly fine, it also runs Metroid Dreadnought mostly fine.

I like to think the doom chain-gun is some futuristic disposable gun with barrels made from polymer. It's a submachinegun (uses the same bullets as the pistol) It shoots slow to keep it's shitty plastic barrels from melting. That or it's built for the UAC to circumvent some kind of futuristic gun control law.

Again, I don't think making sense is that important. It's more about visually separating the weapons from each other.
Something like an M60 would've looks different enough in the silhouette, but from a rear-top perspective it probably wouldn't have looked visually appealing.

You can head-canon whatever explanation suits you, but Doom isn't really a game about logic. 100% of the base designs in Doom make 0% sense. Why do they have chainsaws? Why do they use pump action shotguns with wooden stocks? Why does the moon look like China? You're free to overthink it, but why bother.

one issue you need to adress before release is this part here, after raising the bridges, you can get stuck in this pit with no way out.
regarding balance, the way cacos chase player at beginning while looking for weapons is fun, but barons/knights later on arent just because they are door with hp and I dont feel like paying ammo tax when low on it, thats why barons, knights and final mancubi were simply avoided, which isnt a big deal, its just mildly annoying to see them so early

If you want some critique, I played thru a bit and had some thoughts (see image):

A) Two cacos at start can be kind of going overboard with just pistol, even with an ammo box, especially without room to maneuver around. Throwing in a third one later makes things even more difficult, but doable since the shotgun is there.

B)When you raise floors to make bridges make sure you give the player some way to get back up if they fall down, typically you make the sides of the bridge linedefs face outwards and make them act like lowering platforms.

C) I can see what you were trying to do here with the lowering floor, but it was too easy to react and avoid the trap. Maybe extend the lowering platform out and reduce the height so you can't instantly just backpedal and get back to safety?

D) I really didn't have enough ammo to deal with two barons, even with a rocket launcher. I didn't find the secret so maybe that would have helped? I tried to pull some telefrag shenanigans off but misjudged it it and died. I just turned on respawning like a scrub.

E) Even after managing to telefrag both I still only had enough rockets to deal with the mancubus in the next room.

I think if I were to play this again I would focus on avoiding the encounters as much as possible since there's very little health, insufficient firepower and no armor. Overall it needs a bit of polish in structure and looks and more items/ammo/armor, but it's a playable map -- a good first step.

Yeah I think they made it a chaingun simply because it looked different and they thought it looked cool. Also the pistol was originally going to be like a semi-auto rifle like the zombieman uses. I'm going with 'lowest bidder/ space gun control laws' for head canon.

Chainsaws have carbine chains for cutting metal. The futuristic version of a fire-axe you'd see in a cabinet or something, they have to abide Space OHSA rules.
They found the cheapest pump action shotgun in the Space Cabela's catalog which happened to have press-board wooden stocks.and made a huge bulk order. Budget constraints.
Phobos is terraformed? Gravitational anomaly? Maybe thats what all the mysterious machinery is for! Yeah I think the mountains look stupid and out of place.

Abstract levels are okay. The techbase places are futuristic engineering spaces, who knows what that 'should' look like? It's worse when they tried to make it look like a familiar place, like the ID city levels, everyone knows what a city should look like and they don't.

I come up with a general theme. Draw some corridors, connect with rooms, connect those rooms with other rooms. Add doors, stairs and adjust elevations of place last once I decide how the level should flow. Then I decorate.

For a noob, make a castle. There are mllion noobcastle wads out there, right up there with 'myhouse.wad's. Hellish fortresses tend to look good, don't need much intricate linedefs details like techbases and they're easy to make.

New graphics for the spent pistol casings and the spent shotgun shells.
The pistol casings are based on a new rifle casing I made (which in turn was based on that large orange casing that's been used so long), the spent shotgun shells are from Shadow Warrior, but with a little tweaking, and two angled frames made by me to make them look more three dimension when they are lying on the ground.

Still have to do the 37mm grenade casings, I guess I'll post the rifle casings then.

They kind of glow/pulse a little bit, so it looks really neat.

It's a short episode, but the levels are large.
And they're just full with all kinds of neat attention to detail, like how the concrete floor is all gray indoors, but as you move outside it seamlessly transitions to a slightly dirty texture, as if the courtyards have been subjected to some kind of filthy acid rain, discoloring and staining it.
And it doesn't even go insane with linedefs either, like with Gothic99 or Crucified dreams, texture usage is just really smart, a lot of it is made with stock textures, or mildly modified stock ones.

It doesn't have recoil and it's belt-fed so it can shoot continuously and stay on target, unlike you'd imagine an SMG would. So it's more lethal than an SMG, but it's not like a more realistic brutal doom type-minigun that a heavy dude could brrrrt and cut you in half with.

So headcanon, the spinning stabilizes the gun through gyroscopic effect, is mostly made out of light grey plastic (maybe ceramic) and that's why the barrels are so thick. It's some low-cost weapon (like the anachronistic shotguns) that has wacky design features compared to modern weapons but it's a space gun from the future and so it doesn't need to be like a modern minigun or anything else. Obviously I've put way too much thought into this, but I think ID software deliberately left it up to the player to explain things for people that care about those kinds of things, rather than trying to mansplain space guns to you in the instruction manual.

To be honest, a tactical, more "pseudo-realistic" style Doom mod is the kind of thing that a lot of mods out there have tried, including a particular Immoral Conduct that a certain anon here has been fixing up to modern standards. I personally don't even mind them, i'm a dumbass that turns Brutal Doom or Project Brutality to "Realism" equivalents for extra challenge.

Hideous Destructor isn't bad for trying to do what it does, I just think it goes way, way overboard in being so autistic savant tiers of technical work the player has to manage against game-breakingly difficult and implausible odds. It's practically a jokewad in gameplay terms because of how obscenely ridiculous it becomes, to the point of the mod author fully acknowledging that most people wouldn't even be able to beat vanilla Doom with it. The lack of modern options that aren't mishandled only causes everyone's attention to be focused on HD in that regard though.

Decent first map wad. When you probably want to do to make it better is engineer encounters where enemies aren't approaching the player through a choke point. You'll notice that one of the things that all good maps do is let the player get a little way into a room before it's apparent just how many enemies there are, or have many openings where enemies can come from. Essentially you want to either spring a trap or give the player enough rope to hang themselves with if they aren't careful.

Depending on the game version, simply running away might or might not work. It would definitely kill you in earlier ones.
I remember crouching on the left railings for the first half until the pillar and then trying to crouch from the floor for the other half which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

Some interesting pressure at the beginning by having cacos with not enough ammo to deal with it, ended up only being slightly concerned about ammo by the end in HMP and moderately concerned about ammo by the end in UV. Oh what a difference a caco makes. That teleporter that drops you right next to the Baron is pretty cruel, though.

Are you sure you haven't made a Heretic wad? That courtyard fight with the Hell Knights looked almost exactly like a Heretic map someone uploaded here a month ago or so.

E1M1 is a classic, of course. Blood pumping, subtle changes over the course of the song with harmonizing the riff and the shreddy arppegios.

I actually really do like MAP01's music a lot, even if it's gotten a bad rap over the years. I've always liked chords with chromatic movement, the chord voicing leaping up at the V is the cool, and my head still nods at every one of those tom+snare hits. The solo is kind of a cheap way to make the song feel different when it loops and I don't know how I feel about it just being a never ending run of eighth notes, but it's still good.

The dirty secret with Bobby Prince though is that almost all of his songs are just I-IV-V progressions, and once you realize it, they all feel super formulaic. Lee Jackson is a way more interesting writer (and that's not just because I love his crazy brass), and Stalker is a pretty good example of that. Even with the song being based around a single droning note and variations on one riff, the tension builds really well because of how parts get layered, especially with the horn hits and the swelling string chords. It's just not so predictable and more dynamically interesting than a lot of Doom's stuff.

The fucking best level one music is always going to be ROTT though. The speed, the blaring brass, the blasting drums the contours on the bass, the guitar solo that gets harmonized. It's just so fucking manic, it's great.

anyway, like the other anon said your monster placement isn't great, they all approach from the front through tight bottlenecks which means there is never much pressure on the player to dodge at all aka have fun. try to make rooms more dynamic by having traps/teleporting monsters/changing rooms. taking the yellow key room as an example you could have the mancs release upon picking the yellow key (have them hidden behind the COMPSPAN walls) and teleport a couple revenants near the door to make it difficult to escape.

the best bit of the map for me was said yellow key room; trying to kill the revenant and zombiemen while dodging the mancubus projectiles, although the computer screens make it a tad too easy.

and as usual: more height variation, more interesting room shapes, less backtracking through empty areas and use fewer doors/keep them open.

The flat room-hallway-room is a little boring, but the mancubus arena looked cool and was a nice change of pace. The Pain Elementals get stuffed really easily and there isn't really any pressure stopping me from stuffing them because all the enemies are both weak and in front of them, so all I have to do is just kill them quick and then run up and stuff it. Maybe consider having tougher enemies like Hell Knights guarding it so it'll have time to spit out shitheads by the time I can safely stuff it, or have enemies surrounding and sniping me so it can waddle up and barf while I'm trying to clear the room.

It's always nice to watch someone play a map for the first time. I thought it was interesting that you were conserving shotgun ammo in the first room even though I put in plenty of ammo to last the entire level. Whenever I played it I just used the shotgun to clear out the first 2 rooms instead of the pistol. Designing a map puts me out of the mindset of a player playing it for the first time as I know where everything is.
I also thought it was funny how you were looking for the yellow key. Like I said knew I had to go up to the mancubus platform to get the key, so I wouldn't have thought someone would do different.
Your tips are appreciated, I took someones advice regarding how to properly use pain elementals the last time I posted a map and put them in a spot where they could set up without considering the time required to completely fuck a room with lost souls.

I actually wasn't searching for the yellow key - I was running back to see if there was any health that I might have missed. I would have mentioned that had I done a voice-recorded PRBoom demo (which I always prefer doing, but it's late over here). But you're right that I instinctively try to save as much ammo as possible at pistol start unless it's explicitly clear from the beginning that there's ammo to spare, though that behavior may be different from player to player.

Finally played Madfox' Grunt Grenadin, the first of his post-Abandon maps.

As Phantom Pholly and Tormentarium, this seems to me to be an anti-Q-community map. The bottom line seems to me to be something like "It doesn't matter whether 'they' ask nicely or give advises politely, what matters is whether 'they' take 'no' for an answer. If they don't, it's extortion all the same, regardless of the nicety of the initial request", although I am not really sure.

I don't really like either of those three maps, although Phantom Pholly was by far the worst of the three. I haven't played Vini Vedi Futzi or FourFeather, so I can't comment on them, but for initial acquaintance with Madfox' mappings, I recommend Episode 2 ('Faith') of Abandon (left-behind from the main hall of the starting location, starts with a level called 'Facade'). Episode 1 ('Wanderer', right-behind from the main hall) consists entirely of maps released by him before Abandon and then slightly redone - and it's somewhat too anal in my opinion.

Anyway, neither Grunt Grenadin, Phantom Pholly or Tormentarium are all that great representatives of Madfox' mapping creativity. I don't recommend starting from them.
