Probably because it's the only complete story Suzuki got to make, iirc he wanted 7 games spanning some 16 chapters, and Shenmue 1 was only chapter 1 (Shenmue 2 was meant to take place entirely on a boat, and I think Shenmue 3 was meant to be the Hong Kong arc/Kowloon arc we got in Shenmue 2) There are also some reports Shenmue 1 was meant to be 7 discs with the china arc in there as well.

>>4981579
If anything, Sega had been blowing the budget on the two of them, since the game was in development since 1994 (I think) and was going to release on the Saturn which would've been some technical marvel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foZUcPQAMvg

You can even see Shenmue 2's locations in that small clip. They probably had both games planned out and made only to move it all over to the Dreamcast, and as time went on it became infeasible to give Suzuki what he wanted for 2.

I'm guessing his constant successes, dude gave them Outrun, Space Harrier, Afterburner and Virtua Fighter, along with being a very talented programmer who'd probably do a majority of the work instead of letting the newbies do it.

Sega probably thought he had something here as well, and it'd be the Saturn's saviour and then the Dreamcast's saviour and soon enough sell double it's budget just like Suzuki had done for them in the past.

You can know where it can go by predicting the bouncing, just sometimes the rng can fuck you up. But like you said, shit is damn fun.

>>4981973
In the past the 16 chapters were a thing, but few years ago he said he wanted 11 and showed some drawing concepts for each chapter which gives the idea of what will happen with the story.
Going back to 98 or 99, the original trailers for Shenmue were 90% about Shenmue 2+the intro cutscene, which meant that we were supposed to get in Shenmue 1, Yokosuka chapter+2. There is some interview Yu talks how the releasing of the chapters were changed, which you can assume Sega thought "this shit is too much for 1 game, let's split into more games and get more money back". Which was also the reason that back then there were rumors how Shenmue, after 1, would be released every 6 months and later that rumor that Shenmue 2 was supposed to have 6gd roms instead of 4(with pics of a new area Guilin in some training area with L button qtes)
Oh yeah, the boat chapter(2) never happened because Yu realized it would be boring for the player. That's why there is a short comic explaining what happened there.

>>4981973
He had a concept in mind, the story boards done. Characters like Ryo/Akira, Lan Di, Xiuying, Ren, Chai were in from the beginning.

>>4982626
His success and AM brands. This idea was revolutionary for the mid 90s, so Sega had to give a go. And Yu did what he said he would, he and his team acomplished some amazing stuff for the Dreamcast. Look how Kowloon could fit on only one gdrom, shit is just insane.
The worse part was Dreamcast's death, because he already had the engine done and was already working on the newest chapters. There was even a bunch of soundtrack themes never released since some were saved to Guilin chapters which are damn good.

>> No.4983905

>>4983865
3 is only the continuation and the end of the Guilin part, so chapter 6 &7 probably? I mean, if it needs a Shenmue 4 at least to finish a story(and not the story) it should 2 chapters at least and 3 chapters at most.
Yu also said that S2 had ideas from other chapters and that 3 will happen the same.

>> No.4983940

>>4983905
So what are the chapters then?
Chapter 1: Yokosuka
Chapter 2: the Boat
Chapter 3: Hong Kong
Chapter 4: Kowloon?
Chapter 5: Guillin?
Chapter 6: More Guillin in Shenmue III?
Chapter 7: Middle of Shenmue III?
Chapter 8: End of Shenmue III?

So you'd need like 4 more games then after III. That's insane.

Shenmue 2 is the typical "bigger, badder, more" approach of a sequel that in deep down, really isn't. It covers more landscape but it also filled a lot of those spaces with copy-and-pasted empty rooms. There are more characters, but they are not as real and fade away in streets which is a step back from the original where characters had their own lives and schedules, and also can't interact with as many characters in the sequel. The story has bigger scale but it also goes bat shit insane with fantastical elements all over the place as opposed to being a cheesey homage to 70s Bruce Lee movies where people just wanted an excuse to kick each others' asses.

Shenmue was so meta. A person playing a video game to waste time has to waste time as his character to make the day go by. This character-based time wasting is upsetting to the player, who wanted to waste time in a different manner.

But yeah, that anon is right. Go to the arcade, go train your ass off in the dojo, go buy new moves/do raffles/waste your money at the arcade playing darts or that quicktime event game.

I actually enjoyed the forklift part of Shenmue 1. If you knew what you were doing it went by fast and also the docks was a pretty tense area story wise, with lots of people who wanted to fuck Ryu's shit up, also you had to do a good amount of sneaking and whatnot. It was a tense part of the game.

Think about this for a minute, he had to have had the mirrors for 10+ years and nothing had happened, so what makes him suddenly think someone is going to come after them? And on top of that, why wouldn't he involve the police or at least do something to save his own skin if he knew he wasn't going to survive? In 1 it is weird, since there are unique dialogues for a bunch of characters, including those on Dobuita(like Nozomi) and Ine-san & Fuku-san if you managed to get back to your house, but there is such a short time that you have to choose only one option.
It seems like you were supposed to have time for goodbyes, but for whatever reason it was scrapped. So no goodyes to Mark, the old man,all those who helped in Dobuita, etc.

I mean, the last part of the game when Ryo starts working it takes all the freedom you had with free schedules and you cannot be back to Dobuita before 8pm except for one day. It was a bad decision, since now that you had the money you couldnt waste it without having issues

Metal Gear Solid kind of advanced the concept, didn't it? I mean, you only have a handful of Codec/radio frequencies, but dialing any of the main cast will net you any of some 20 conversations each, makes it feel so lifelike. There is another option to waste days, like before learning about the last Wude name in the Temple, there is an option to negociate or infiltrate, forcing negociate 2 times will allow to waste a day and then wait.

Btw, in 2 HD time goes slower. You can realize how slow it goes when airing books, since in the original it can be very tight to get all books, but on the HD it can be done around 10:45 without fails.

But the whole point of Shenmue is that it's partially a life sim. Making the player wait encourages exploring the world, interacting with people, seeing what there is to do in the meantime while you wait. You can carry the savefile of 1 into 2 and keep adding toys to your collection.
Otherwise, have a savefile in 1 when you are looking for Charlie so you can arcade whenever you feel like. In 2 you will get warnings of points of no return, so you can savefile at those points so you can fuck around with lucky hit, gambling, street fights, etc.

You have enough time, since each game gives like 4 to 6 months as a limit. Doing everything in the game is a pain in the ass though. It means doing all raffles(Abe and the 2 tomato stores), all toys(means getting high scores on arcade games and 1 coin runs), getting all certificates on the slot machines(and toys for all 777s machines)
And there are always missable events. Probably with a guide you can get them all in 1, but not in 2 since in 2 there are a bunch of events with different scenarios if you fail them or getting in the 1st or 2nd tries.
I dont know if it's possible to have every clue written on the notebook, never cared. But i know the fortunate teller also counts into that.

>>5022074
It is wrong because the intend of 1 is to chill on your hometown and take your time. If you cannot wait, then ignore Shenmue 1 and skip to 2 since there is a "wait" option. Or just ignore Shenmue since it is not your thing and play a more action featured game.

>> No.5022143

I've already played and enjoyed these games. You don't need to tell me about them. I'm just wondering why folks are holding on to "intent" when other games prove you're still immersed when using a FF feature. I am the epitome of acting out like a Japanese man with these titles but I also don't see harm in not holding people hostage if they don't wanna do something in particular right then and instead another task. Story isn't even the only time locked thing so it's a bad assumption that it's just for that.

I hold on certain games like Shenmue. For some reason people miss things in 2 because they dont explore and go straight to the story.
It always amused me that for years people didnt knew about the duck racing and thought that was a lie. Or how you get your own duck and train it by racing more times. Some goes how some arcade machines are hidden in Kowloon, hell, even in 1 there are people that missed the Abe store or Nagai Industries because they dont bother to open doors when the game tells "zoom things, open things, explore things"
These are part of the charm of Shenmue as you know.

>>5022156
The limit leads to bad endings. 1's limit is 15 April, 2's is 31 June(yes 31).

Okay, I've lived in Japan for three years. I will personally inform you that they have scumbags around, too. They are simply more subtle about it. I can't believe I have to even tell someone this. Even in Denmark, select groups are assholes. There is no fantasy region.

That said, I enjoyed my time. It's just asinine to act like the place and its citizens are perfect.

I don't think the place sucks... I haven't and don't want to try China. I've heard enough stories. Just saying not to bullshit people. Old Japanese men really think they're slick with foreigners.

They are. A Japanese man fast talked me into buying a sega genesis that was fully restored. I took it home and found out it was just a microwave oven.

There is mirror plot, emperor who made it, the dynasty plot, if you show the mirror to the antique shop(the one that sells scrolls), to that chinese translator and the old man at the park.
The intro in 1 with Shenhua is the prophecy being told.

Damn. On Izumi's case, she wants to hang out with another japanese, since her job is damn boring.

Question:Do you ever have to utilize either Fire or the Police in this game?

No, just lines that Ryo will handle revenge on his own and he is too old for pranks.

Nothing is wrong with that, and I prefer GTA over Shenmue for that reason. That guy is nonetheless missing the point of the game which is to be a slower paced action adventure game. If you're finding yourself waiting in the game at any time, you're not soaking in the environment properly.

Favorite move, /vr/? Big fan of the elbow assault for quick but strong attacks though I think the full arm break fire is probably my overall favorite.

Ive never been able to do Arm Break Fire.

On a side note, i finally realuze how bland Yakuzas world and combat is after playing Kiwami 2 after Shenmue 1 and 2 back to back.

Completely forgot how the Pine arcade fights arent in the Shenmue collection(on the menu where you can replay minigames and some fights). Which sucks, since those fights are the best and way too early in the game.

>>5025727
Arm break is cool, but I prefer Stab Armor(advanced) and Hind Blow.
Shame that the only place where you can pratice grab moves comes so damn late in 2.

>>5025973
If you waste time praticing the moves it feels great, since some moves will change into better versions and can also be mixed into other moves as combos. Those who dont waste time with training will miss these and then think the gameplay sucks.

Yu needs to finish the story with Shenmue 3. My heart can't take waiting for a 4th one.

>> No.5026760

He's not doing that, already confirmed. He said he could rush the story to end at 4th but the ideal would be at least 5 games.

The new font is terrible indeed. I have been ignoring most of the time the notebook since I know what to do, but for those who dont, some words are hard to read.

Good for you. But you are missing those mastered moves, like that arm breaker gif that can be useful on those lv16 fights(on the Shenmue Collection in 2)

>Sam & Larry(those 2 gang members that hang out with Cool Z) speak english words sometimes on cutscenes and when fighting

That's something new, I heard the Yuan's female jpn va is in one of the fights despite the japanese version of this game using its male voice.
There is also this weird glitch where characters stop motion and have stand still face image while speaking.

>>5026756
Open ending confirmed. So if 4 never happens, people can take that.

>>5026764
That is wrong. Yu shown a few picture years ago how it was always 11 chapters. So, 4 games are enough

>>5026867
Glitch, it happened with me and others. You need to redo that shit again, then skip the credits 3 times and hope the save screen stays. If not, try again until you get a cleared savefile to use in 2.

Another stupid glitch, trophy related, but stupid
>supposed to get a story related trophy when reaching Kowloon
>didnt get, find it weird and google
>"Doing Fangmei's birthday and saying goodbye in the apartament means you will miss the trophy because another glitch.. You have to ignore the goodbyes and get another scene with her when leaving the temple"
What the fuck. You are supposed to say the goodbyes. How can they even fuck a trophy that cannot be missed
At least i had a save before giving the money to Ren, since I knew the moment Ryo gives him the money it will lose the freedom of aberdeen and leave to Kowloon. Having a save before that is great to fuck around whenever you want

>> No.5028461

>>5027830
That would be cool. If the 3rd game ended the revenge plot, a 4th entry of just comfy town exploring and talking to people would be fucking great. Solving the mystery of the mirrors and floating swords.
