I played Doom RPG on android, it works like a charm and it's pretty damn fun. Wolfenstein RPG is also a lot of fun, I'm playing that right now. Play Doom RPG first though, it helps you learn the mechanics. Going straight to Wolf RPG would kinda suck I think.

Just finished the Mill in TNT Evilution.
I'm enjoying this megawad but this map was terrible.
It drags on for so long and it's sou nnecessarily cryptic.
In the end it throws waves of enemies to you.

Why?

Thanks, I do need a refresher. On.my old Motorola Droid 4 I had the shareware version of doom and duke 3d. Dunno if they're still in the app store but the controls being ON SCREEN were a pain, I could never get used to them. The rpg shouldn't be a problem since it was turn based. Thanks for the heads up on Wolfenstein too. This game cost 6.99 in the vzw navigator store in 2006 or so.

I can't think of anything that would be in TNT.
It's just that there's a few levels in the late third which are actually pretty awful.

To save your bloodpressure a bit, in Baron's Den, one of the keys you need to progress is hidden in a room behind a fake wall, in a small dirt corridor, not far form a large green marble pillar.
There is absolutely nothing to indicate or hint at this anywhere, the key is just hidden because go fuck yourself.

the four big things I remember being an issue were:
- unreal's armor system was impossible to implement in zdoom at the time, and it's still impossible in zandronum, since you need zscript for it
- the GES goop merging together was maybe possible back then, but would've required disgusting hacks to make it work. zscript would make that actually feasible
- the homing on the ripper's alt-fire caused some grief, although that's because I didn't know what a vector projection was back then
- the big one was that samsara's codebase was fucking awful, became more and more impenetrable with every release, and no one wanted to deal with it anymore. and yes, zscript would massively help with this one too.

if zandronum ever gets a zscript build, expect things to happen

unreal has layered armor, and zdoom has no inherent support for layered armor

eg. you can have a shield belt at 20%, an assault vest at 57%, and a kevlar suit at 40%, and you get hit for 100 damage.
- shield belt has 100% absorb rate, and absorbs the 20 damage it can, leaving 80 damage left
- assault vest has 90% absorb rate, and absorbs the 57 damage it can, leaving 23 damage left
- kevlar suit has 50% absorb rate, and absorbs 11 damage, leaving 12 damage left
- you take the remaining 12 damage

only when necessary, as I remember it. the real killer was not being able to figure out how to remake the ripper or bio rifle's mechanics, as not including either of those... well, I remember how people *really* didn't like not having the super nailgun.
also I guess having ASMD cores potentially block shots (so you could shoot them) would be bad; that's something zscript can help with too. that wasn't really on anyone's mind on the time, though.

>>4978114
nah, hexen armor distributes the damage evenly between all five armor sources (amulet/mesh/shield/helm/innate), and the amount you have doubles as its absorption percentage (the AC value is 1/5 the amount you have, so 20 is 100% absorption)

It's only going to get worse and worse from there. Map 17 was last good map. It's shame really. First third of Evilution is fucking godtier. Looks and gameplay start drop from map to map in second third and maps start to become too large for their own good. Last third is like "we have one night time left to release this wad, but we have only 20 maps, so let's just throw something there to finish this". Last map is quite expected climax to the whole shit show, because it might be worst map I've played. Boring as shit, has that horrible bridge puzzle at the beginning and last room is one of most boring ways to design Icon Of The Sin boss battle.

Still in some strange way I still somehow like the wad. Maybe it's the nostalgia.

From the Quake wiki about Doomguy in Quake 3:

"In the chat lines he also get mentioned as "Mad man", "Loony" and "Schitzo". When he's losing the match, you can witness him losing levels of his sanity. Talking about voices from the pitch, massacres in the corridors of UAC and dead friends. You'll see that he's a reckless war veteran, even if he's called a lunatic, don't turn your back to him or he'll make you pay for your foolishness."

I've tested it and apparently it's true,I've fought him on Hurt me Plenty on Anarki arena. At first it was pretty easy then he started to get pretty tough, then when I was close to win,he made a comeback and almost reached me. Damn.

I've did the same with Phobos,he did a comeback later on but not nearly on Doomguy's level. He didn't have the same accuracy.

I know that Phobos is tier 1 and Doomguy is tier 6 but I've always thought that they were nothing more than palette swaps. That's really cool.

What do you guys think of a map with the gimmick that there's a gauntlet room available from the very start, but that it locks you in and pushes you to your limits, so the objective of the map is to go around to smaller rooms collecting weapons and ammunition in a kind of freeform way in order to get strong enough to tackle the final room when you feel ready?

Like, you start with a pistol, there's a room with imps that rewards a shotgun and some ammo, a room with shotgunners and a chaingunner that rewards the chaingun and ammo, some kind of non-combat but deadly challenge that rewards armor, etc. ?

Yeah, I'm thinking a hallway or circular hub area with non-linear offshoots, and strict ammo counts that the difficulty levels would take care of. Maybe have it such that you can only miss ~20% of shots on UV before you're in trouble, and require 100% accuracy on Nightmare? Would be interested to see a speedrun of that kind of map, and how few resources a really good player would need to beat the final room.

Demo version of LOTX - a community-optional project (kinda?) released.
Contains:
-R667 assets
-Music (cannot be compressed to midi, sorry)
-3 levels 'completed'- subject to future modification (map01-02, inter01)
-Most maps existing in some form, though others are only basic layout.
-Maps are mostly experimental and tend to have some kind of gimmick.
-Maps are free to edit/modify to your liking; feel free to mess around with the maps yet untouched especially.
-Credits not implemented- won't do until project properly ready.
-Probably a bunch of stuff I failed to mention

It's GZDoom.
You can make a demo if you like. There's still some glaring issues but I did my best to fix it up.
It's a demo for a larger mapset, people can jump on if they want, basic layouts are generally there

general comments:
map01 originally involved a cyber chase right out of the gate, but it was generally removed, otherwise okay.

map02 is generally not that great, but it was one of the first 'draw 5 shapes and connect' - oldest renditions pictured.

inter01 has some bugs in the script and is rather experimental; hard to convey the theme, would be easier if 100% of map was semi-transparent, textures and all, intended to experiment for a future theme.

Some people are hopeless casuals and refuse to adapt to a different enemy, because it's largely a weak one, and when they bite the dust, they thus feel cheated.

A lot of people also somehow make the assumption that using cover ever is ugly and wrong, just because a lot of generic modern game feature inorganic cover mechanics as their core gameplay (and then assert this is good reasoning, in spite of strafing around a corner not being even remotely the same as pressing a contextual prompt that makes you sit statically behind a chest-high wall, because "COVER IS FOR COWARDS")
Dodging behind a pillar to avoid taking a face full of buckshot, is somehow not a good course of action, it's instead the dev's fault that all enemies aren't just throwing slow projectiles like imps.

Most of these people got into the game in more recent years, then because of exposure to terrible attempts at realistic shooters, and hearing fairytales about oldschool shooters, come into old games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, with warped expectations.

In short, if they'll gladly maneuver to put a baron of hell between themselves and a mancubus, to make fatty hit muscles, and watch muscles slap fatty's ass, or get into hiding when flameboi starts working his devil magic, why would they just as well not put level architecture between themselves and a zombie with a shotgun? Because they one way or another have the expectation that they shouldn't have to.

Doom 4 is by no means slow, but the original game can be pretty stupidly fast if you put the effort in.
You have straferunning, wallrunning, rocket 'jumping', really fast enemies like the archie, cyber and lost soul, etc.

I mean there's theoretical scenarios where you strafe+wall run at high speed, and an arch-vile then launches you into the air, where you can fucking leap great distances.

a sticking point for me on these things is that id never publicly released their authoring tools for Doom. Everything was reverse-engineered by hackers. The very first custom WAD was created by hand in a hex editor in 1994.

Decades later someone found DoomEd and idBSP on a NeXTcube someone found in a dumpster but id never publicly released it.

Also, comparing custom WAD authoring tools, dehacked, etc. to Snapmap is laughable.

I dunno if monster deaths per second is the way to go for "speed" in a game.
Racing games are pretty fast and you almost never kill demons in them.
The monsters in Doom 2016 are faster monster. It necessitates dodging more, and from faster projectiles. Conversely your move speed in OG Doom is faster, and monsters go down quicker, but can be just as threatening if used correctly.

Might not be worth debating which is faster since the idea could mean different things with different weights to their relevance.

I think that level design is one of the key questions here, actually.
Like, original Doom is a fairly easy game, for the most of it, but if you look even something like just Plutonia, it dials up the gameplay a lot, not even going into usermade megawads like Alien Vendetta or Hell Revealed.

Yes, when he has some times we often play games like doom, heretic, blood, strife, quake, hexen, duke nukem, shadow warrior, unreal, blake stone, rise of triads, powerslave, redneck rampage and so on. We don't mind more "recent" games like POSTAL 2, but what is essential for us is hearing the OSTs or if possible 80s dance hall, power ballads and so on, 60s/70s rock, 20s/30s and up with the blues and if there's the occasion we put on some heavy metal, vintage or recent, but for the latter we prefer experimental stuff in the sector of thrash metal, armonic and more. So yes, fundamentally what we do is playing old games. I wanted to be on theme FPS but we've played tons and tons of hours on games like Crash Bash, Crash Team Racing and other PS1/PS2 games.

As someone who plays almost exclusively vanilla or vanilla-like mods, I have to admit I was a bit overwhelmed by this. It's certainly purty, though I started out not realizing that I picked up a second pistol, nor could I immediately tell where the keycard was supposed to go (or that it was a keycard at all, actually). Also, by virtue of it being a GZDoom map, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be jumping/crouching. It's nice, just a little much for someone like me. I don't know if that's meaningful criticism because you may not be making a mod for someone like me. I can record some more demos of the later levels if you want them.

Is Trenchbroom not good enough for you? It can even make Hexen 2 maps.

Because most Build engine games did not release any source code, making developing editors for them very difficult (and many have significantly different map formats so eg. you can't just open a Blood map in Duke's Mapster).

Honestly a cute enough trap I dont mind tho I'm not into it as much, a buff girl is also alright as long as its not over muscular
loli or shota character is out of question tho, but character that is petite overall and/or tomboyish would be okay.

However the thing is; It'd be third character, that would be way too much work

If I were to make third one, in most likely case it would be tomboyish not too shapey girl character that is shorter than both, and looks a bit androgynous and has some visible muscularity in the arms and abs, a short sporty girl.

but once more, third character is too much work with all the outfits in so far
Unless she'd get no outfit bonuses and was completely boring

I absolutely loved this game. Only thing I wish is that it had more enemies to fight but the four weapon limit didn't even bother me much at all. In fact it probably works well to the games benefit to have kept it to 4 weapons. Maybe 5 or 6 could have worked but the game was definitely balanced around each character not having a huge arsenal so anymore than 6 would have been redundant. Perhaps more characters to play as would have worked well though. I liked the necromancer and hunter in the wrath of cronos mod.

In Doom 4 you can shoot 2 imps with a shotgun in the time it takes you to shoot one in the original. 3 if you count the burst fire upgrade. It was a wild ride, it started alright, by the middle it was a fucking joyful riot, and it kinda mellowed out at the end, I didnt like the last row of maps as much and I became way too powerful even playing at max difficulty and enabling shit like abyssal monsters, I got Bellenus spawning in one map and I just abused the slowmo elephant gun on his ass

I don't think playing with mods means they don't like the original game by any means. This isn't Skyrim. People play with mods to spice things up and get new experiences.

People love the Ace Attorney series but it isn't exactly something known for its replay value. Instead people who want more play Ace Attorney Online.

Probably because as /doom/ as shooter lovers, mostly recognize nuDoom as not-shit, some love it, some think it's good but flawed, and some think it's just ok.
Not everyone loves it, but few people here outright hate it.

I think it partially stems from people having extremely limited expectations on Doom 4 and didn't expect it to be any good at all. Few people expected anything great, many expected it to be really bad, so people were kind of pleasantly surprised that it's not bad.
There's legit criticisms to levy at the game, a few serious ones (the lock-in arena combat is the big one), but if you consider the drawn out development and the restarts, it came out surprisingly good, many other shooters with troubled development and having essentially their whole progress reset multiple times, have not been nearly as lucky, Duke Nukem Forever being the horror example (though in fairness, Doom 4 was mostly developed in quiet, while DNF was hyped for over a decade, meaning there were a LOT of expectations to fail to live up).

I think what can be said is that Doom 4 is objectively "Not Bad", and then beyond that it's very subjective, nothing appeals to everyone, and some things are particularly liked by many, but not all.
Meanwhile, /v/ is densely populated by underageb&s, so of course they have fucking horrible opinions and tastes.

so how many people prefer playing a vanilla style map, or prefer playing something that uses a ton of GZDoom effects?

personally I can't really get into those latter maps, I like the short, sweet, and to the point maps where you run in, gun shit down, solve some puzzles for the keys to the exit, all that classic doom goodness that doesn't involve a huge open map that focuses on being pretty and trying to be a whole new game that doom wasn't meant to be. or anything like doom 2's middle part.

This is all true. Even if the only thing Carmack gave to gaming was flexible, extensive modding, we would still be forever indebted to him.

>> No.4982257

>>4982239
Several reasons.

1. Anybody who's aware of the Doom modding scene outside of the scene itself is mostly just aware of Brutal Doom. In terms of visibility, it's all but saturated the environment. It's a real shame because there's plenty of great mods out there that are just as good as, if not better than, Brutal Doom, that don't get the attention they deserve.

2. Plenty of people coming into the scene through Brutal Doom only know about Brutal Doom. While this isn't every Brutal Doom Neophyte, there are plenty that will demand up and down that your own gzdoom mod, megawad, whatever be compatible with Brutal Doom, even if it makes no sense to put the two together. Demonsteele protested against this by shitting out golden tiny revenants everywhere if you have both loaded at the same time.

3. Sgt Mark IV, the mod's creator, is an enormous asshole who's gotten himself banned from every Doom community haven you can get banned from. A lot of people in the Doom modding scene have personal grudges against him because of how he's behaved.

I'm probably missing some but number 1 is the big one IMO.

I don't hate him. I hate his crappy attitude and his blind, overzealous, retarded fanbase. I hate how he's just spinning his wheels with Brutal Doom just tacking on random features rather than finishing it for good and moving on. But I guess at this point he's damned himself to work on it for pretty much forever, he's now just known as "The Brutal Doom guy" and I'm pretty sure his fanbase would drop him if he worked on something else that wasn't Brutal ______
In a way I pity him because he's backed himself into a creative corner, where he will stay there and stagnate, maybe he's complacent where he's at, which would make this even more pitiable.
Complacency is a fate worse than death for anyone that makes stuff.

I can enjoy either. I don't think using GZDoom effects inherently means having bad level design. And often times vanilla maps are just boring because they're too standard and don't have especially good level design.

1: +CLIENTSIDEONLY actors ignore the first frame when they spawn. His A_JumpIf never happens.
2: All of the defined sprites are 0-duration, i.e. nothing ever appears.
3: Multiple completely unnecessary flags, like +CORPSE.
4: Multiple completely unnecessary parameters, like defining "game Doom".
5: This is really just the icing on the shit cake but holy shit that indentation.

So what we've got is an actor in which half of it doesn't work, the other half doesn't appear, bloated with needless parameters and flags, arranged in a barely-readable format.

>has +FORCEXYBILLBOARD, scale 1.1, renderstyle translucent, and alpha 0.7, but the only frame with any duration is TNT1 A 1, which is completely invisible
>"game Doom' for an actor which is never going to be placed on the map, and can't be even if you wanted to for some reason

1 is misleading; it's not that the first state in Spawn won't ever run, it's that the action tied to their starting state is ignored when it's first spawned (which applies to all actors, not just +CLIENTSIDEONLY). it'll run when it loops.

as an aside: if you override BeginPlay in zscript and have it do a state jump, that *will* run immediately unless you set the second argument (nofunction) to true
it'd probably be wise to do that, because some ACS scripts will spawn an item to read things off of it (size data, speed, etc), then immediately delete it, and if you start messing with the game immediately in BeginPlay, that could lead to some very, very weird problems

Still, what I don't understand is why HL's release seemingly coincided with a very sharp cutoff point for "Doom-style" shooters, moreover, why it was Doom-style shooters specifically, that were affected.

Like, it isn't about cinematography, Craig Hubbard's Monolith games existed quite independently of HL (as proven by Shogo which couldn't have possibly been affected by HL in any major way), were quite distinct from it in containing little to no puzzle elements and humongous attempts at "show, don't tell" - and they pretty much didn't affect jack shit in the genre. So did (or rather didn't) Goldeneye007, the extent of influence of which ended with the first two Medal of Honor-s (as well as the in-house "spiritual sequel"). Jedi Knight was, well, it was probably quite big AND cinematic AND pre-HL, but it didn't affect jack either.

Halo, which was a part of a completely alternate FPS design branch, founded with Pathways into Darkness (with the omission of Marathons which WERE explicitly influenced by Doom), again, pretty much regarded HL1 as if it didn't ever exist, did its own thing and basically carved its own largely HL-independent niche in the genre.

It was specifically Doom-style shooters that were affected the most with HL1's release and explosive success. Even the shooters explicitly stating to be "return to the roots" were, on a closer inspection, changed in radical ways, arena focus and such. The only, and I mean, ONLY places preserving the 90s spirit through all this time seemed to be the usermap communities.

Like, I'd even argue this had nothing to do with Daikatana enormous "success" either, the subgenre was a rotting corpse by that time already.

Why and what the fuck happened? Doesn't anyone just find that whole thing (as well as the specificity of what it affected) excessively weird?

I guess because cinematic games looked extremely impressive then, Half-Life doing a particularly good job compared to most others, while still being fast paced action.
Looking at Half-Life 2, it was far more cinematic, and while I think it's a good game, I don't think it's nearly as strong as the first one, just because how much more linear and less explorative it became. It wowed the shit out of me at the time, the graphics were mind blowing (and still don't look awful), along with physics, and a gun to use them, a feature unbelievably novel to me.
With a more mature perspective though, I find I look back at the first one and find its levels much more interesting and fun, even if some of the graphics actually look really crude (though I think the HD models look very nice still).

Some of it can also be traced to 'realistic' WW2 shooters getting rolling, many of those aped the style of Saving Private Ryan and Band Of Brothers, both extremely popular at the time, and was part of the public's increased fascination in the war.
This was a pretty significant factor, and you could see its effect in WW2 artifacts and memorabilia, surplus guns began climbing price, as much more people realized a lot of them were really nice or cool, for instance, a transferable MG42 machinegun could go for as little as a few thousand dollars (today, easily over $20000), a lot of people looked at German stuff, thinking "Eww, Nazi", and it wasn't always easy to sell one to just any collector or shooter, or American M1 Carbines, nice condition, just a few hundred dollars, but eeeh, maybe some other time; today a nice condition one can easily be $1000
You also had people like the Aryan Brotherhood counterfeiting Nazi memorabilia to sell at gunshows (one of the many reasons they stopped being allowed to set up shop there as time went).
It isn't even getting into The History Channel transforming into The Hitler Channel, lord knows that warped people's perception of the war.

>> No.4983393

>>4981137
That is quite natural, considering that the "throw the monitor away" schtick (as well as all the EXPLICIT narrative-level subversion that branched from it) fell in place at pretty much the last possible moment. AT BEST, D44M, even if I am correct about my hunch, ended up being on "now I have the actual enemy in my sights" to-be-continued note.

Still, there was Cloud's Call of Doom. It was developed for what? 5 years? 4? 6? A shitload of time regardless. Then they basically say "What the actual fuck are we doing?", the whole thing reboots. It isn't Classic Doom either, not with the combat being explicitly adapted from Q3's deathmatches, it just tries to seem like one. The only identity there is seems to be like not to be a Call of Doom.

Somehow, the whole thing clicks together in a completely unprecedented way pretty much noone in their right mind ever expected to happen.

Like, what the actual fuck? What is happening? What am I even looking at?

I guess it's a bit like with Quake, where the development was a sordid mess stalling for months, before they rushed to piece it together into a Doom-ish shooter, rather than the originally intended (and completely different) open world RPG.
This kind of cycle can easily make for a *heinously* awful game, but I think it speaks for the skill and dedication of the guys back then, that they pulled through and made that mess into a good game, and in spite of high tensions.

20ish years later, Doom 4's development is a mess of its own kind, but most of the people who made Quake are gone or soon leave.
That they turn it into a game that's actually pretty good (if flawed), I think speaks for the new people's talents and skills, because once a development reaches a certain point down this kind of path, it can be hard to salvage.
How it also runs so smoothly on PCs, I assume is because Carmack always took issue with so many modern programmers lacking any kind of problem solving skills and only knew how to work the Unreal engine (his words, not mine), so I figure he made sure to train up and drill these people to get real good at their job, out of pure principle.

jokes aside, D44M just opened to door for an improved sequel, whether or not they are going to deliver is anyones guess,Im eagerly waiting for mods with the hook shotgun

BD? I dunno, you can talk about the fanbase and its influence but at the end of the day it made a lot of people aware that Doom is still very much alive and kicking
progressively those people get funneled into the good stuff, if they dont stick to just BD
