If turtles behave similarly to Sonic the pinball, an impact at terminal velocity is completely harmless.

If you play a Sonic game with emulator rewind and compare it to a Nintendo platformer, you'll immediately see Sonic grants the player much less agency. You'll need to rewind much further to correct most mistakes. That's why Sonic games aren't fun. You're not controlling them nearly as much. It's like Dragon's Lair that way.

..Isn't Sonic (supposedly) being more punishing a point in its favor? I don't like most of the games but it sounds like you're complaining about needing to plan your routing a tad better for a good stage run. Which is weird.

It's a momentum-based pinball game so I guess angling your shots is fine? As long as we aren't basing its level design based on the ill-informed "just run right" idea.

"grants the player much less agency", yeah we can see bullies weren't doing their job when they didn't kick the snot out of you when you were a kid.

It's hard to imagine that there is someone out there so retarded he to come up with this and think it made sense. That's not how logic works you hardcore autistic spastic.

I'm an avid Metroid player myself and I'm more versed in it than I am the 2 good Sonic games. That said, I'm not vibing with you on Sonic being out of your control. You manipulate momentum to your will based on positioning. That's pretty fair.

The point of sonic isn't simply speedrunning though. The devs almost never take control away from the player, even in the fast moving "hold right" running sections you can and should jump off at certain points to find hidden items, pathways, and bonus levels. A lot of the game is about player driven exploration.

>> No.4981898

IMO the shields powerups in Sonic 3 were the most fun mechanic the series ever got and they should have just designed the entire game around those powers like they did with Rocky Rodent

Sonic was always more about pinball physics than brainless speed. The marketing focused on speed but the games did not. Boost and Adventure are not classic Sonic logically translated into 3D, they're gotta-go-fast simulators with a sonic skin. Instead of physics-based platforming you just spam homing attack. Instead of earning speed through maintaining momentum as you run and bounce through an obstacle course, you just push up and hit max speed in 1 second, then proceed to watch some auti-pilot bullshit until it's time to mash homing attack again.

Physics are fun bitch.

If you play it without having played all of the classic four (1, 2, 3, and CD) it's a decent sonic game with excellent presentation, music, and very few frustrating segments.

If you have played the originals, it's a godly experience that plays to your knowledge of the old levels and mechanics while also improving upon those things substantially.

I've played it under both circumstamces so I have a unique perspective.
