You guys seem to know a lot about CRTs, so maybe someone can help me with this since I'm pretty CRT-retarded.

I use a 23" Sylvania (SST4245) CRT that my dad gave me as my classic game monitor. In my recent quest to obtain a good classic game setup, I now want to find out if I can fix a couple issues with the TV that have been nagging me since forever.

First, as pictured, there seems to be this bright, thin border on the left side of everything dark on a lighter background. Normally it doesn't really bother me, but lately I've been playing GB games on SGB and it's really pronounced and a huge eyesore when I have to stare at the small, monochrome GB graphics. The only menu setting that somewhat affects this is "sharpness", which doesn't make it go away but it does make it less visible at the expense of fuzzy visuals.

Next issue in next post.

The second issue is that the edges of the image seem to be distorted shape-wise. Not sure if this is a regular thing with CRTs.

The vertical middle of the screen kinda bows inward a bit. This part doesn't bother me as much as the lower right corner, though. You can tell by the background grid pattern that the bottom right just bends outward and gets cut off. Rarely a real problem, but highly noticeable when something moves down there on-screen.

So any idea what I can do to fix these? If it's fucked, then are there any suggestions on an affordable replacement within the same size range? I've heard all about the Sony PVMs and I've been hunting them, but I'm almost to the point where I may just settle with something else.

What kind of video output are you using? I'm assuming composite RCA?

You may want to switch to S-Video, if the CRT allows for it. If it doesn't, you might want to invest in a better CRT.

Bumping for OP. In the meantime, here's my new CRT battle station.

Sony PVM-2950Q with a pair of cheap S-P2500 Pioneer speakers hooked up to it.

Here we have Donkey Kong Country 3 being displayed via composite video. My S-Video cable seems to be MIA right now, and the monitor happened to come with a single RCA to BNC adapter.

My RGB SCART cable hasn't arrived yet, either.

SNES and above are S-video; the OP pic is using S-video. Second pic is composite off of a modded Famicom, but that doesn't matter because the edge warping happens on all inputs.

And I use first-party Nintendo S-video cables, so it's real S-video output and not a shitty aftermarket cable.

Nice. I'm envious of PVM owners. There were only three around my area on Craigslist, but two have disappeared and the only one left is $250. Fuck.

I'd love to invest in RGB upgrades, but as of now I have to settle for S-video on everything except NES/Famicom.

I see those kind of 'halo' effects with composite out all the time, but not usually S-Video.

As for the edge warping, there's not much you can do personally unless you have a professional open it up and adjust it, if even possible. It's probably on it last limbs and you might be better off seeking out another monitor.

Not sure what to tell you, but I'll bump your thread a few more times.

MML2 via S-Video output on a PSone mini.

I just picked up my PVM from a fellow several cities over. He did a lot of private video work, but his clients requested to see his work on widescreen LCD monitors and he ended up hardly using the PVM.

I ended up paying $250 for it, but it seems these monitors are much more common in America than Canada, as I'd been on the search for months to little luck. I'm very happy with the purchase, too.

Other than PVM, do you have any suggestions on what to look for in a 'good' CRT? I don't necessarily need RGB; I'm happy with S-Video so long as the monitor does it right.

Been thinking, the Sony PVMs are branded as Trinitrons, right? How are the consumer-grade Trinitrons? Should I look for one of those?

They're pretty good. As long as you get one that supports S-Video and hasn't had most of its life burned out of it, you should be okay.

Some consumer-grade Trinitrons DO support RGB, even in North America. Be on the lookout for them.

Ooh really? You just gave me a new mission.

I have both HD and SD Trinitrons, and the SD one is awesome for old games. If you can't find a PVM, something along the lines of an SD WEGA will definitely suit your needs.

It appears they made some fixes to the Yabause core so it can actually be compiled/. Can someone who has the environment provided by Maister try to compile it? I have a clusterfuck of an environment so I have no clue if maybe one of the many thing I downloaded has something wrong, so I wanna see if someone else can get it working.

Thanks, that makes me happy; there are a ton of those lying around Craigslist.
