I didn't really think the gore looked that good, also the live grenade in his mouth I think plays on how frequently grenades are employed, they really are pretty much a core part of the gameplay. Every pickup is 6 grenades you can use as you want (the pickup also will leave grenades you can't carry, for later), as defensive hand grenades, offensive 37mm grenades, or a chemical weapon.

It also goes into how the simpleminded AI of Doom makes the monsters inherently just constantly aggressive, how even in the face of absolute death they do not stop and will continue to advance towards you, doing what they can to kill you.

Technically there was arena-focused stuff in the first two videos, but yeah, there was no inherent lockdowns and it seemed the monsters either teleport in more effectively or already exist depending on where you are in the map / how many in the local area you've wiped out. Judging by "Demonic Corruption" as a bar, it also sounds less like we're waiting for them to come to us, and more like we're literally going full Predator by hunting for them. I wouldn't be surprised if you still have objectives like the seeming large building-sized Gore Nests and so forth to tackle, but now you can do it at your own discretion, certain foes like the Archvile probably being a mini-boss encounter aside as the Phobos gameplay was entirely about player's forward progression.

Lets post some experiences with mapsets+gameplay mods

Epic2+Doom incarnate+Brawurst
feels consistent to kill nazis in ancient Egyptian ruins, shame the weapons mod opted to use the dumb yellow jacket for BJ, I dont like it really and your hands constantly remind you of it
as expected the weapons are a bit too overpowered in default difficulty, the brawurst enemies feel a bit samey since every low tier enemy has a machine gun and every enemy of note has a minigun, not counting the doctor, the dogs and the flying ones

Sunlust+Metadoom
Metadoom feels a bit...sluggish, I cant put my finger on it but there is something with the overall feel, the Doom3 rifle certainly sucks even with the rockets, the shotgun is fine, Im still early on the mapset

working on semi-port of l4d to doom2, got access to all decompiled maps and models, so its easy in terms of graphics, the only challenge I got are custom weapons, which are somewhere between l4d and doom, and fake "ai director" which I know how to pull off in theory, but I cant code for shit, so it will be trial and error thing, but in terms of gameplay I know what I want.

It's like a partial/total conversion, lots and lots of new and neat things, using DeHacked and alpha and beta resources to make something that on one hand feels very oldschool, but on another also feels very fresh.
New weapons, new monsters, great levels, all giving up a very cool challenge with a bunch of things that'll make you go "Damn...!!!"
No music, so enjoy the silence and the intended imposing atmosphere, or put on the PSX Doom soundtrack, actually fitting rather well here.
One of my very favorites in recent years, still waiting for the other episodes.

He can be real pest if you use him right; ergo, put him up on a tall ledge surveying a larger area, where he's free to lay down hot green plasma towards you from a distance.
If you don't even hear him at first, you can first notice he exists because suddenly there's a lot of firepower coming down around you.

He can play similarly to the Mancubodes in this way, except he doesn't hit as hard with each shot, and is a bit less of an artillery barrage, also he's far weaker in HP. Also, while the fatass can be absolute destruction in a tight volley coming at you with no cover, if you're up close to an Arachnotron, he actually isn't all that terrible, because his pain chance is decent with most weapons you have.
Vanilla Doom's handling of hitboxes make him, fatso and big spider kind of really hard to do melee though, so you have that going for them.

For challenge, it doesn't really try very hard here either. The last dozen maps have been very short, small maps, with really low monster counts, pic related had *20* monsters, the most dangerous being a mancubus shoved behind some fat bars, meaning he gets fuckall for opportunity to hit you.
The level earlier had some minor arena, which concludes with a battle with a cyberdemon and arch-vile at once, which, what little fucking challenge could have been, is immediately deflated by the fact that you automatically pick up an invulnerability sphere.

I intend to see this through to the end, but I guess what I'm saying is that when it actually started picking up at the midpoint, it then dropped it again.

Yes, exactly, that is my main inspiration and one of my favorite mods. It love how it works, thematically. My concept is more strategy, placing troops and ambushes, resource management, rather than mostly just running backwards with your finger pinned to the fire button on the mouse. It'll have that, too, which I think adds depth.

And then you have the last level, which I didn't really get the time to take pics of, because it's actually fast and frantic.

The premise is that you've set a nuclear bomb to go off, and you have to run for it as the Icon Of Sin there starts to spit out demons.
This is one of the few times that Perdition's Gate gets really challenging, and yet again it's such a quick event.

You burst up some stairs and through some hallways, the exit is guarded by two cyberdemons (who are just cunts, as I've admittedly made them), and one arch-vile, preventing you from outright sprinting forward (in theory).
Trying to retain room to try to take out the vile, while the monsters keep spawning in, and making sure you don't eat rockets, is actually pretty tricky. I basically just sprinted for it and hoped I would just teleport away to the next part, but gullible me should have realized that Perdition's Gate is a premature ejaculator, and here the level, and the game, ends.

I would not recommend Perdition's Gate, and I think that it was probably for the best that it missed its chance to get to be a part of Final Doom, where it would have been remembered as the really weird and bad one.

I want to say that I don't think PD is bad, it isn't, but it's also not especially good.
I would say it's a megawad of disappointment.
To start with, it promises to be extra challenging on Hurt Me Plenty, and it really isn't very challenging at all. Now, maybe it's just my own experience with Doom, maybe it's Immoral Conduct's changes to the gameplay, but I'll say that this usually doesn't change whether or not a campaign really tries to challenge you. I don't feel like PD tried hard enough.

The second part of the disappointment is how I felt that when the game started picking up speed by the middle, I was expecting it to keep improving, and I was expecting to see more of the exciting and alien hell planet environments it showed me, that it teased me with.
Pictured here is a planet you travel to briefly in early in the middle. These are fresh new textures the game hasn't showed you thus far, it's a strange hellish, living rock, or hardened flesh, floating in space, with odd architecture, and strange biomechanical features to its landscape.
It's fucking cool, it's novel, I really haven't seen something done exactly like this in Doom before, and it got me excited, because I thought it was an early peek at what the later hell levels would look like.

There are no more levels like these, you don't get to see this environment ever again. The majority of the third act of PD are generic hell temples which just barely have anything going for them at all. There's no interesting exploration to speak of, because everything just kind of looks the same, the same boring techbase styles, the same boring castle/temple constructs that last maybe 5 minutes at best.
I really wanted to like it, I really hoped it would be something more.

Yeah. I don't know if this was in during the time they were trying to pitch it to iD, or if that art got made when it was attached to Wraith Corp. It's phenomenally ugly to look at.

Worst of it all is that the titlescreen really plays into the whole 'demonic constructs, living worlds, and biomechanics' angle, but it's so preciously rare and used so little in the actual game.
You expect some sort of epic battle in outer space on some platform made out of corpses and living demonic flesh. There's like maybe a few minutes of that in the entire game and it doesn't look anything like this. It looks cool by its own merit, but it's still just barely there. You could erase half of the map in the game and it would genuinely improve the experience.

I wouldn't say that it's bad, or that people shouldn't play it, there's some cool stuff to look at, and I can see what there is to like, but it's so hard to say "Perdition's Gate? Oh yeah, totally check it out!"
I think if anything, the assets should be pillaged and used to make like an 11 map episode focused on hell in outer space, one that is much better. Or someone makes new assets vaguely based on these aesthetics.

It feels like a really neat idea that's wasted on mediocrity.

I think what I would recommend over it, besides the official Final Doom which actually is pretty good, mostly, would be Icarus: Alien Vanguard, the free megawad which Team TNT put together as a concession to the community as TNT Evilution ended up becoming a commercial product.
It's not excellent, but it's far more interesting and varied than Perdition's Gate.

There's still Hell 2 Pay, but first, I don't know where to get it, second, it was never considered or pitched for Final Doom, and third, it's a partial conversion, I think it uses some DeHacked stuff. I'd still check it out, but I'm also kind of cautious given how much of a letdown Perdition's Gate actually was.

Yeah, WolfenDOOM ports the Wolf3D levels over to DOOM 2, the MAC levels and the original DOS levels, plus the author created a bunch of custom scenarios using the assets. There's also WolfenDOOM: Blade of Agony, which is something entirely new, and is a bit like RtCW in some ways.

Cus a lot of people are quick to immediately call an instant hit attack unfair even though most hitscanners do less damage per hit than projectiles.

I think it's actually likelier now than it's ever been.

The first game was an absolute mess of delays, rushes, compromises, and bad moods.
Most everyone still kind of liked the end product and felt it was a pretty good game (and it says a lot about their talents for how they all came together and 'just cobbled something together in a hurry', and it came out so well), and though even Romero did like it for what it was (mind he would compliment iD for Quake 2, in spite of being on somewhat bad terms with them, shittalking them a lot, and competing with their product, he's honest about how he feels about a game), there was also a strong resentment for the project going the way it did, as it departed massively from his original vision, and he left to do his own thing.
Sandy would also later leave, and the thing is that Quake's delightfully dark and gothic, Lovecraftian atmosphere, can in large be traced to the input of Romero, Sandy, and also Adrian. Adrian stuck around for a long while, but the other two didn't, so you didn't quite have that strong trifecta.

With tension between Romero and Carmack, it was kind of uncomfortable times for the lot of them, and most probably felt like they wanted to put that behind them, move on to something else. That was Quake 2, which was a completely different game ending up getting the title it did for their intended one being taken. I don't think any of the guys had any intentions of revisiting the first game.

Flash forward a couple of decades, and pretty much all the original people are gone, except for Cloud and Willits. It's a different company today, but there's people there with drives, ambition, and pride, because once they kind of got a good idea of what they wanted to do with Doom 4, they really went for it and made sure it was polished. You don't put so much effort into optimizing your game if you're just shoving it out the door for a quick buck, there were people who really cared about making sure you could run a brand new and shiny game just fine on even mediocre computers, and have it still look good. It isn't a perfect game, but it's very impressive under the given circumstances, Doom 4 spending years in limbo and having a couple of false starts and even being started over a few times. Compare to Duke Nukem Forever, which came out just absolutely awful.

Given the focus and attention that Ranger was given for Quake Champions, and given how there's a strong direction with Doom 4 and Doom 5 for making a more fast paced action game, rather than slow and boring modern tactical military shooters with pretend realism, and some of the buzz, I could see Neo-iD actually being interested in making some kind of fast first person shooter based on the original Quake's setting, either a reboot, or a sequel. That's more than you can say for all the original guys just wanting to put it all behind them.

I don't think so. From my understanding, AD is a collection of single maps. although four of them have rune markers, and a secret area in the hub asks if you've found all the runes. Keep an eye out.

iD could just tell Todd "Hey, let's do another quasi-oldschool shooter like Doom, except we do it like the original Quake", and I think that would be a solid enough pitch.

It wouldn't perhaps have the same kind of level design, or the same kind of gameplay, but iD has shown that they can still make an FPS which appeals to modern audiences without being a COD clone. And I think people would like the variety, make it fast paced, but more of a focus on more dangerous monsters.

I'm fine with making it a bit harder. I kind of like Quake's emphasis on making the individual monsters more threatening (since they could have less at a time, given average computer power in the day).

I wouldn't mind some glorykills, if I'll be honest, but they'd be less relied upon like in Doom, and generally related to the axe. Maybe you only get them while you're having Quad-Damage or something.
Like it would be a way to kill/disable zombies, for instance.

The first part is a great and slow melancholic theme with great guitar, then later the second part cuts in for some high tempo heavy metal.

I'd love to see someone sample the second part into a Doom track, and then juxtaposing it with the slower TNT one.

I was wondering,what if you added James Bond on Samsara?

What ability should he have?

-When using mouse and keyboard the aiming is much better(without auto-aim).It's also extremely useful with far enemies.
-Among the characters who reload,he would be the fastest because no matter the weapon it takes nothing to reload.
-All the weapons,even being able to dual wield.
-Weak armor.
