its not from cigarette smoke.

ABS (acrylonite butadiene styrene) plastic is flammable, so they added bromine to it, to make it less flammable. bromine is a yellowish brown color. after years of exposure to light, the ultraviolet rays start to break the molecular bonds and separate the bromine from the ABS, allowing it to oxidize and start to turn the plastic yellowish brown.

Nah, that's not a normal shade of yellow for a sufami. Believe me, I saw my share of yellowed systems for sale in Tokyo shops, they don't get like that, the yellowing pattern looks different when it's from sun or air exposure. I've also worked with my share of tar-cleaning thanks to both my past work in a used electronics store and my experience of having moved into a home that was populated by a two-pack-a-day smoker before they bit the big one. From my experience of seeing this kind of shit, I can assure you that this is some quality cigarette residue.

Incidentally, if this came with the cords and was tested and working it would be a deal at 20 bucks, even in the cheaper shops I saw the tested and complete stuff started at about 3000 yen.

After a healthy scrubbing of course

Though I wonder if there isn't some sun damage too there. The space in front of where the cart goes is less yellowed, so it might be sun damaged but that spot was shaded by the cartridge (ie. the system was in a windowsill for 30 years).

That the thing is pretty evenly yellowed all over, however, brings question to that theory. I imagine that if there is any sun damage, it's minimal compared to smoke damage.
