I've been playing what limited PSX games I can on the PS3 store, and now I want to get an actual PSX or PS2 to play what I haven't been able to. What should I know about these consoles before I buy? I'm going to need to be able to run downloaded games or burned discs. It'd be ideal to get a PS2 because they are backwards compatible.

PS2 slim is a better buy from what I've heard since the original PS2s apparently had problems that I've never heard about until recently.
You might want to check out emulation as well. If you have even a marginally decent PC you can emulate PS1 games, and likely PS2 games. Also look at a retropie if you don't like playing on PC. This might be a bad time to suggest emulation, though, what with Nintendo shutting down ROM sites.

Go Banzai yourself, weeb trash. The PS1 has a HUGE variety of games beyond teenage angst simulators.
>Spyro series
>Crash Bandicoot series
>Croc series
>Medal of Honor series
>Need for Speed 3
>Gran Turismo 2
>Street Fighter Alpha 3
>Tekken series
>Soul Blade
>Bloody Roar 2
>X-com
>Legacy of Kain series
>Armored core
>Tomb Raider 3

Do I really need to keep typing up a list of good PS1 games? We'd be here forever.

I found a PSX, but no modchip. I can probably find a suitable PIC to make one but what can I do to make this shit work?
