is it worth buying a pc-engine without the cd attachment, or should i just wait for a decent deal on a turbo duo? i'm interested in the library but the tons of models are confusing.

also, has anyone had problems running the ntsc-j models on american mains without a transformer?

>> No.4967338

Definitely get a CD attachment (or Duo)

If I wasn't such a poor fag, I would have got one of these. Not OP. Back to emulation.

You'll want one with a CD drive or else you're missing out on like half of the PCE's worthwhile library.

Either get a Duo-R(X) (original Duos all have bad caps by now unless they've been replaced) or a CoreGrafx + IFU + CD-ROM + System Card 3.0 (or Everdrive). Former is simpler, latter gives you more options down the road as far as ODEs and whatnot. Price will probably be similar either way.

>also, has anyone had problems running the ntsc-j models on american mains without a transformer?
A decent switching power supply doesn't care. If you're using the stock brick it'll get a bit warmer than normal and might possibly fail earlier, but the console will be fine.

Best bet for poorfags who can't into electronics is a core 1/2 and a SSDS3. So yeah, take your time finding a decent deal on the console and save up for the piracy device.

i'm decent with a soldering iron, i found a duo on ebay for 150 with "small sound" which is almost always a cap issue. maybe i'll just pick up a busted one and fix it.

>>4967696
i was checking these out but goddamn that's steep

>>4968435
just looked into that. damn, for that price i'd expect it to be perfect. some people are soldering in caps as a low-pass filter, but that seems like more work than i'd want to do on something that's already pricey as shit.

There are heaps of great CD games so yes you should get one.

I'd love for a chink clone to come out but even at the current price it's competitive with a fully working Duo R

>> No.4969595

>>4969243
Understanding the basics of electricity isn't necessary to change caps so if you're willing to gamble $150 on your ability to fix a duo go for it. But a core+SSDS3 costs less than a working duo and TED and gives you so much more. Sounds like you really fell hard for the duo meme.

Core grafx are region locked, so you'll want to stay away from that.

Just get an original pc engine off ebay, and an everdrive for it.

>> No.4969808

>>4969786
You're an idiot. PCE HuCards use a different pinout from TG-16 ones, so all models are "region locked". Region switch mods are easy anyway.

>> No.4969835

>>4969808

Where did you get that info? It even says on the everdrive store that it sports pcengine and turbografx.

>> No.4969860

>>4969835
Yes, because the Everdrive can work with either pinout. Original HuCards can't.

>> No.4969913

>>4969860
And does the everdrive support both types of ROMS? Yes.

So how is my suggestion not good for OP? He would get the entire ROM library for both Turbografx and PC Engine for a grand total of about $150.

>> No.4969924

>>4969913
Your suggestion was dumb because you implied that a CoreGrafx wouldn't be as good as an original PCE, when in fact it would be just as good if not better due to more video output options.

>> No.4969926

>>4969913
akshully he'd still be missing the cd gaems.
Fact of the matter is that pce hucards and tg16 cucards are not interchangeable, and not because of some software region lock within the console.

Needs the caps replaced but it runs fine with no audio issues. It still kind of hurts when I think about it, but my enjoyment of the console and hudson stuff in general has more than made up for it. Now If only I could get a model 2 sega cd for a decent price..

Honestly anon, if it isn't having any issues with performance then don't bother recapping until it does.

Easier to replace caps now than to fix corroded traces later.
