let me rant a bit here about DK1

>hammer is a fucking bomb: yah it lets you destroy barrels ducks, but half the time it doesnt actually smash the barrels if theyre coming down a ladder or if theyre in front of you because it happens to be above your head, and on top of following barrels inf ront of you coming down, you also have to be silently counting how long youve had it so it doesnt end on you right in front of an oncoming barrel
>SO MUCH FUCKING LANDING LAG
>for a game based around getting a high score, HALF THE TIME JUMPING OVER A BARREL GIVES YOU NO POINTS
>ridiculously easy to get stuck on a ladder, meaning you're gonna get crushed
>have to kick off a wall to get a hammer on the rivets stages

Donkey Kong Country 2, I'll be that guy. Not because it's the usual answer but because it's the truth. The soundtrack is still one of my favorites to this very day and I never get tired of playing it year after year. Truly an enjoyable experience and a masterpiece of platforming on the SNES. Now I'm nowhere saying that DKC or even DKC3 are bad but this trilogy is engraved into my soul as the platforming heart of the SNES alongside SMW and Yoshi's Island.

I loved DK1 but didn't like DK2. Did they ditch that whole "saving/moving to different overworlds/accessing certain levels costs coins" mechanic for the third one?

>> No.4973042

>>4971789
No, they expanded on it, and you can move freely in the overworld map between worlds. You need to spend coins to unlock the secret world levels like in DKC2. There's an adventure game element of collecting items for NPCs which is a bit of a drag. Not a bad game by any means but definitely not as good as DKC2 or as focused as DKC1.

Separating the apples from the oranges, as I prefer the Country games to DK64, but 64 still has some nice atmosphere, lots of really nice lighting effects and music that dynamically changes as you enter certain closed areas, or go outside, or underwater.

this is the correct answer. rare is the most overrated developer of all time. DK94 is one of the best games on the GB, period. DKC is an underwhelming platformer that slid by on graphical achievements that in retrospect weren't all that impressive.

Even without the extra moves, controlling Mario is simply more responsive and consistent in DK94 than in DK. That's the real reason it's easier than the original DK, because you have better control over Mario.

Are kids really that pussified now? I thought Cranky was great as a kid, and I loved the rival in Gen 1 Pokemon. The shittalking is what spurred me on (on top of Cranky just generally being funny, but especially in the case of the Pokemon rival where I just wanted to beat him at every turn and give him what-for). Do modern kids really not have that kind of competitive drive to say, "Damn, that NPC is an asshole... fuck him, I'll show him!"
