I know, I know. It is stupid to have the rivalry still going. But seriously SNES is much more superior.
I recently tried playing all the 'top' and 'hidden gems' and 'exclusive' Genesis games. None of them were fun.
The sonic games were okay for a level or two and then got retarded.
Vectorman was boring.
Toe Jam and Earl was repetitive and boring.
Golden Axe and Altered Beast had no depth to the gameplay and became boring in minutes.
Even something like Columns (simple gameplay designed to be fun) was bland.

I haven't tried the Phantasy Star games yet, but I suspect they'll be inferior to what the SNES and NES were offerings during the same time.

Is this just me growing up with NES and SNES or are these games really just overhyped in their old age?

>> No.4960424

It's just how you feel.
I also grew up with NES and SNES, but I got a Genesis a few years ago and have been having an absolute blast playing the games you mentioned and more. If it's not for you then just move on.

Nah, you've probably grown into a jaded individual and are only giving NES/SNES a pass because of nostalgia. Either that or it's your younger console warrior self interjecting your mental constructs and corrupting them with unfiltered spite.

Your complaints aimed at top level stuff like Sonic and Vectorman don't really make sense to me unless you were thinking about these games for such a long time your already biased judgemental abilities created impossibly huge expectations which were obviously not met and now you blame the games for it. Basically you uncounsciously expected current gen games quality because "people just wouldn't shut up about them hidden gems" and were disappointed when the games turned out to be products of their time.
If you think I'm zoning out answer me this: why did you wait for so long before finally trying out Genesis games? Nobody was stopping you all these years, and real gaming enthusiasts would want to broaden their horizons.

I like the Genesis, but finding good games on the SNES is so much easier. Yoshi's Island, F-Zero, the Mario games, Earthbound, a metric buttfuck ton of fantastic JRPGs, Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, etc. Also that fuckin Genesis sound chip is just gross. And I may know jack shit about the power and engineering behind these systems, but comparing the most popular games from the two I find that the SNES has the most games with graphics that've aged really well, except for maybe Starfox or something.

You know that's only because Nintendo has maintained its IPs to this day right?

This is part of the reason we have creative stagnation in gaming. The dumb horde of gaming masses gravitate to known properties like Nintendo's usual cast of characters and punished Sega for actually being creative and refreshing their IPs pretty much every gaming generation.

You have literally no evidence for this except for Sega's marketing attempts to make Sonic look "cool".

Had Sega moved with the times they would have abandoned the arcade approach by the time of Dreamcast and made shitloads of cinematic JRPGs (they experimented with the cinematic style with pretty much one game - Shenmue). Instead Sega stuck to their arcade guns and made arcade style games from start to finish.

>> No.4961989

>>4961972

As I said, this is just bias. Many of the radikewl 90s third party games were on both SNES and Genesis (Mortal Kombat for instance). The only thing I can possibly think in favor of your argument is that EA made a lot of radikewl games and they supported the Genesis more strongly than they did the SNES (though they had a presence on both machines).

Sure you have Comix Zone, a first party game which is 90s as fuck, but that's counterbalanced by first party SNES games like (as you admitted) Killer Instinct. Even DKC is 90s as fuck with its focus on boom boxes and "jammin". Earthbound is also 90s as fuck, etc.

The only reason SNES may seem more "timeless", is as was already noted above in this thread. SNES IPs are still alive to this day while pretty much all the Genesis ones other than Sonic are dead and buried in the 90s.

Beyond Oasis is just as good as LTTP. Shining in the Darkness is unmatched by any dungeon crawler on the SNES, and Shining Forcr is unmatched by any SRPG. Phantasy Star may not be as good as FF or DQ, but it's sure better than Breath of Fire and Lufia. I'm a huge RPG fan and the Genesis is an excellent console. Hell, even Gauntlet IV has an excellent RPG mode and a great soundtrack!

Reusing IPs isn't necessary a bad thing. Nintendo has definately done that a few times but take 3D Mario games for example, none of them are really the same except for direct sequels. And even then if they reuse IPs the games are still fun like the Kirby games. IPs like Assassin's Creed and CoD are examples of lazy rehashing though.

>> No.4963332

>>4961762
Also no, I don't think it's because those IPs are still relevant, I honestly think the SNES has more worthwhile games than the Genesis. Even then a lot of the best games on the SNES haven't been in any new games besides Smash for a while (F-Zero, Earthbound, and Star Fox may have had Zero but we don't talk about that one)

Really I think Sega is lazy from not using their IPs enough. Besides Sonic, Football Manager and Bayonetta, there's not much else. Where's Ristar, Nights, Burning Rangers, Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, Rhythm Theif, Altered Beast, Virtua Fighter, Shinobi, Space Channel 5 and Crazy Taxi?

Like shit it is. Back then during the nineties i loved my super famicom and my snes'es. How could you not, there always was a large number of fresh games coming out each month. Not owning a snes was seriously missing out.

These days i am totally weirded out and disgusted at the systems lower than standard resolution. The blurred pixel filtering. The annoying chorus/reverb and the slightly off pitch music. The fucking slug of a cpu that makes arcade style games completely un-enjoyable.

But whats the most annoying is the vast amount of brainless nintendards, foaming at the mouth, because they cannot wait to tell you how glorious their fucking super nintendo is.

Never got into Zelda. Never got into Metroid. Played a fucking asston of F-Zero and Mario Kart. We had other games, I can't remember them now. My brother was into Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and that shit was obnoxiously hard to me at the time.
On the Genesis, I played some sports games (mostly this one FIFA game), a fucking TON of Sonic, and then we had some other games I can't remember anymore.

In modern times, I mostly tend towards the Genesis, since all of the big games on SNES aren't really games I'm into.
nearly none of those games you listed are anything I'd have considered top-shelf Genesis games, even back in the day

Some of my favorite Genesis games nowadays would be (take note: some big games are missing since I haven't played them that much, like Revenge of Shinobi)
>S3&K
>Shadow Dancer
>Shinobi III
>Streets of Rage 2
>Gunstar Heroes
>Contra Hard Corps
>Castlevania Bloodlines
>Space Harrier II (really wish it wasn't a launch title -- it's held back a bunch by both the small ROM size and the lack of experience with the hardware the devs had, but I love this game)
>Super Fantasy Zone (sadly, didn't get a US release)
>Ranger-X

and at the time, I'd have probably been impressed with
>Outrun (in this age, I've got the Saturn version, the 3DS version, and Cannonball)
>Super Hang-On (3DS version and MAME largely replace it)

it's not even the engine's fault, it had an asston of features and shit designed entirely around making the process of making something for the Genesis fairly easy

Nah, it doesn't feel too long at all. Games just had a different dynamic back then. You'd start playing for the first time and get your shit rocked early on. But you keep returning to it because you're likely to get further in each time you play, repeating until you can hopefully beat it. And it's not like the games are long so it's not really a problem doing that. The correct way to play games from this era (especially the difficult ones) is to play until you rage quit and then pick it back up again a few hours later. Games these days just kinda take you along for the ride.
