It's not a very hard boss but it's definitely a poorly designed one. Most of Mega Man 2 in general is, really

No. The only Mega Man game that I know of that forces you to restart the whole game is the shitty Game Gear one.

I'll never understand why Mega Man 2 is remembered so fondly when it's not as good as any of the other NES Mega Man games.

I dunno, even with its shortcomings, it's pretty well put together and just fun to play. One may argue it's nostalgia, but I never played console games in my childhood and even I enjoyed it a lot, so idk about that. The music is downright amazing

Well it's not so much that it's a BAD game, but it's strange how high it's held above all the other Mega Man games. I find it to be the weakest entry, even compared to MM1, but it's revered as the #1 perfect Mega Man game of all time.

It's better than 4 - 6, and 3 had the potential to be better but that tight deadline left it kind of broken and with the worst end game of the NES games.

>> No.4961086

>>4961059
I would definitely not say it's perfect, and there isn't that much of a fundamental difference between this and other MM games. I guess it boils down to personal preference, but I for instance vastly prefer the controls of MM2 over those of the later games, I just don't really like dash and charge mechanics. I think everybody has these games that others consider le besd gaem evur and they just can't understand why

>> No.4961101

>>4960576
The problem is that it's not immediately obvious that the guns can only be destroyed with Crash Bombs, so most players will end up in an auto-death situation before even understanding what they did wrong. I doubt anyone has ever cleared this room on their first time entering it.

>> No.4961130

>>4960952
Because MM2 was a monumental leap in quality from 1. No other MM game improved that much from its immediate predecessor. Besides, all of the NES games have issues. 3 is rushed, buggy as hell, the Doc Robots are awful, and there's far too much slowdown. 4 takes too long for boss health bars to fill and the music is pretty lackluster. 5 has shit weapons, a shit Rush Coil, and the Mega Buster is overpowered. 6 has bad robot master designs and is clearly the result of a team that had run out of ideas two games prior.

What makes you hate the doc robots? They were one of my favorite parts.

>>4960723
I believe you have to start Wily castle from the beginning if you run out of lives.

The real annoyance with this area is that dying doesn’t refill ammo, so if you run out of crash bomb then fuck you. Your only option is to grind for random ammo drops which just aint fun. This boss is made even worse since if I remember right there’s a crash wall or two in the room before with items behind them, so you’re even more likely to run out during the fight.

I think the robot master stages are superb, but honestly I’ve always thought the wily castle levels shit the bed a bit when it comes to level design. That one song is also really overrated.

>I just don't really like dash and charge mechanics
this. Slide is OK by me but I dislike how charge buster trivializes most enemies and.
it's also why 9 and 10 are better than 4-6.

I mean it's not obvious, but as a kid I just chalked it up to savage NES difficulty

Plus, there are two points where you can take out two walls/turrets with one shot
- after the first wall, fire your 2nd Crash Bomb directly between the two walls (should be attached to the corner above the lower wall, but the 'teeth' on top are on open air), this shot will take out both the 2nd and 3rd walls at once
- the last turret (top left) is behind a wall, and that wall has the 2nd last turret overtop; from the central platform, if you run out and jump up (squeezing out from under the overhead ceiling), you can plant your 2nd last shot on the spot squarely between that 2nd last turret, and the wall to reveal the final turret

You can clear this boss in one life if you do these and make every shot count
Yeah it's not great game design, but it's possible, and NES difficulty was often pants-on-head retarded

The only thing that really ruined MM6 for me was that they took away the ability to jump out of a slide. Other than that I loved everything about it.
