Earthworm Jim general?

I think these games are fun, but the opinion about them online seems to go either towards extreme praise or extreme criticism. What's /vr/'s verdict?

I think the games were great

>> No.4951576

The games were excellent, though playing on higher difficulty was a bit shit in EWJ2 due to the retardedly excessive Puppy Love sections.

>> No.4951591

One of those concepts that didn't deserve to go under the way it did. In an ocean of LOL SO WACKY mascots, etc., Earthworm Jim has always stood out as something genuinely creative.

>> No.4951631

EWJ1 is great. MD/Genesis Aladdin is not shabby either. If you want to complain about crappy games with well-animated graphics, there are much better targets.

>> No.4952056

My personal ranking of the levels (not counting the shitty Andy Asteroids and the different parts of the same level):

1. New Junk City
2. Level 5
3. Down the Tubes/Tube Race (don't listen to the virgins who can't do it, a fun level)
4. Buttville
5. What the Heck?
6. For Pete's Sake
7. Big Bruty
8. Intestinal Distress

Did Aladdin have an actual variety in gameplay/leveldesign? It's like the testing ground for EWJ.

don't worry OP I think the first two games are average and normally get bored of playing them after the 2nd or 3rd level.
I love pic related though cause I'm a faggot.

Only played EWJ 2 on the snes. Was very good, there was a ton of variety. Sometimes my mom would even watch me play, because she enjoyed the humour of the game.

This has only bothered me once in the EWJ games. One of them, I don't remember which, has Jim jogging in place whenever you're not moving. I felt like this was a bit much.

EWJ games are difficult for all the wrong reasons. The scenery/sprites doesn't really match up their collision/hit boxes and the animations are too long and can't be cancelled in most cases. A lot of levels are just some random gimmick for the sake of having a gimmick. It's a classic style over substance example.

The first one is a flawed classic. The second one is so laden with bizarre genre shifts I can't recommend it to most people. I love all the characters and music and artstyle so much, it's a shame the franchise is in limbo. Imagine a fully competent new EWJ with tight run and gun action (with proper collision lmao), buttery smooth HD animation, and that classic cartoony humor intact. It's too good to ever happen.

>> No.4952379

>>4952364
I dunno man, it's probably all nostalgia. If you look at it objectively even the first game is full of stupid gimmicks. It doesn't know what genre it is and it's pretty much just the artist/designer wanking in front of you.

>Doug TenNapel, the creator of Earthworm Jim, is a Conservative Christian. The character of Professor-Monkey-For-A-Head, one of the bosses in the game, is not only an example of his wacky, absurdist humour; it is also TenNapel's mockery of Darwin's theories and Evolutionism.
And yet there's people pretending those games are good here. Good job, /vr/.

That Tube Race without the secret air supply man... As a kid I surely would have enough time to learn and beat it on console, also that means the game lasts long, but nowadays I am glad about and proudly use savestates for that one.

TenNapel is a complete freakshow and absurdly full of himself, but his art is still incredible.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by janky, but if you're interested in a solid, though extremely simple platformer in the Neverhood style/universe, give Skullmonkeys a try. The levels are gorgeous, the soundtrack superb, and the controls are tight. But as I said, it's a very straightforward game. Nothing like EWJ in terms of gimmicks or gameplay variation.

Completely payable and original. The controls feel a bit "floaty" or off compared to other platformers but barely make a difference in gameplay. People who can't get into the game over that are probably the same scrubs who bitch about "production order" and "muh difficulty" in games.

That's what the gods invented save states for. I agree that I these days probably would not have the patience to play them like on console, after losing all my worms on Snot a Problem I definitely would NOT be in the mood to repeat everything, but a savestate at the beginning of each level makes them much more bearable. Or if needed savestate after each checkpoint even, gotta find the right amount, too much kills the enjoyment, a bit of challenge should still be there, but not using them at all kills it as well...

I'm just trying to help anons understand the truth in a sea of mendacious SJW lies. EWJ has quite varied and cleverly designed levels, the brilliant animation should not be allowed to overshadow them. Perhaps some of the hitboxes are counter-intuitive at first, but the game is ultimately a triumph, and would be even with weaker graphics.
