Lets talk about retro Megaten (Shin Megami Tensei and such)

I played pic related a while back and loved it but unfortunately I lost my save. How many hours does it take to complete it? I'm thinking about playing it through fully this time.

>> No.4949241

It's like... an 12 hour game, I guess? It doesn't take too long to retrace steps, it's getting beat up that's time consuming. Also, I'll be first to express my large love for Digital Devil Story 1, 2, and If...

>> No.4949243

It's that short? In that case I have to play it again.

I get the impression the older SMT games are the better ones

It is for me. Probably not the best person to ask since I've played them over and over. I think the series is generally solid with mainline titles though. I enjoy the Devil Summoner games from the Saturn as much as the DS ones, for one example.

The older games are a bit weird. The snes games are pretty hard to play due to insane encounter rates and combat being very basic. However games like Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers are much better and more fun to play, though those are more "down to earth" compared to the mainline games which may put some off. I have yet to try KMT but I hear the MTII half is pretty good.

fusing, conversations, the story, the graphics, the music, the setting, the idea, all of that has always been great though some of the games miss a few notes and they all have a bit too much dungeon crawling to endure, final dungeons the navigating of which is harder than the actual bosses

I played through both games in KMT. The port of MT1 is excellent and makes the game a lot more 'playable'. im playing through MT1 on it right now. its not bad, about as much as i expected for it so far, granted im not too far in the game yet. ill play mt2 after i complete it.

i tried getting through SMT1 but i droipped it early on because of game breaking bugs made progression impossible. for some reason during the part where the girl was getting publicly executed early on, the game script broke and it kept summoning 8 demons every turn so it made things impossible to complete at that stage so i gave up.

i beat smt2 all the way through chaos ending. its not something id replay even though i completed it like 9-10 years ago but i thought it had one of the best stories ive played from the series so far.

Take Wizardry 4, make the difficulty less bullshit, expand the monster aspect, set it in post-apocalyptic Japan, add the chance to kick the shit out of God. That's Shin Megami Tensei.

Don't summon all your demons at once, the game isn't so difficult you need a full party. Mag isn't hard to get but it is tough to manage if you don't learn how to properly tackle enemies. The iOS version is unironically the best translation. Gideon's team basically made everything up and it's not even a little accurate. That said, you need an iOS device that runs iOS 10 or lower to play the iOS version, they never updated it to 64 bit. You'll probably just end up playing the SNES translation, but make damn sure you apply the patch that fixes Gideon's literally broken hack job, or you won't be able to complete the game on one of the endings.

Some people are mixed on it. The soundtrack for the original MTII on famicom had a unique soundchip making it really special, naturally it couldn't be reproduced on KMT. For that reason alone some people swear by the famicom version but disregarding that it is a much better game.
>>4952107
>>4952114
I wish we could see both the hero and heroine of MTII in Kaneko's modern style. Though at least he redrew them for KMT, his human art for the famicom MTII is pretty bad actually.
>>4952116
There are so many classics but limiting it to retro and trying not to do the obvious picks with stuff like the Jacks, fiends, Satan, or Beelzebub I really love his work on Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers. My favorite demon in the series is Siegfried from Soul Hackers. I love the Ring Cycle saga and Kaneko gave him a lot of cool details. The norse armor, leafs on his shoulders, and the orange skin to represent him being soaked in Fafnir's blood are just so fucking cool and show he really did his research for his designs.
>>4952242
Not him but the patch really helps. In Gideon's original patch the game is so buggy that you can't even do the law route as the game crashes near the ending. Thankfully the Orden patch fixes everything thankfully.

Devil Summoner has supposedly been entirely translated but no one taken up programming it. The entire script is online I believe if you were interested in reading it.

Soul Hackers will probably never be translated due to the existence of the 3ds version. At best someone may take the 3ds script and put it into the Saturn or ps1 version but there is no real reason to do so when the 3ds version has all the content of the saturn and ps1 versions and more. maybe try citra if you want to emulate the 3ds version.
