1st for Гepoи.

Also, I hope HotAnon will join this thread also because I'd like to hear whether they intend to add more decorations (trees, flowers, hills, foliage, lakes etc) to their Highlands terrain. Don't get me wrong, Highland terrain has really beautiful flowers and I LOVE the inclusion of waterfalls (if only every terrain had waterfalls), but I'd also love to see the a variation of tree decorations that are partially covered with snow (just like the mountains are) and there are no 2x2 foliage decorations to speak of (in the vein of Grass/Rough/Desert Hills or Swamp Foliage).

One thing I've noticed, especially for Homm 3, is a weird (to me anyway) tendency to play the game to build some uber-hero, uber-army, or some other cool setup as opposed to actually winning the game.

>Once upon a time, playing with some buddies, friendly game, chatting as much as we're actually playing
>Get fortress, and while Tazar isn't my starter (we all did random for both town and hero), he was a lucky pick in the tavern on day 1, so he became my main
>Creeping along, fighting neutral stacks, and leveling up.
>Get air magic, and along the way get armorer up to expert, and then beeline dive to get Air up to expert level as well.
>By level 4, Tazar has Expert Armorer and Expert Air
>Buddy tells me that I'm dumb, because I can't control his next level up, and indeed, I got the choice between Navigation on a map with no water and scouting.
>Ha ha you have a wasted skill slot, you may as well give up now!
>Except, of course, I have expert Haste by the middle of week one.
>Blow through zillions of neutral stacks, gobble up lots of resources, and by week three, I'm crushingly stronger than Kevin, and end the match on month 1 week 4 day 2 with a complete obliteration of his main army inside his own castle without even the resource of things like teleport or having Ballistics; but my army had grown bigger enough and I had 5 levels on his hero that I just blew him down anyway.

Advantages now often snowball into even bigger advantages later, and I'm perfectly willing to accept the potential of a hero skill weakness if it means I get something great right this moment. And yet, at least anecdotally, I seem like I'm in the minority here. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?

well It's as close to sorceress town as it may be in H3. Plus, in hota you have appropriate terrain and even Red tower straight from H2's townscreen, but as map object.

ALSO. One of the first things I made for Hota was cleaning Conflux screen. In original there are many graphical bugs, broken persective, black pixels around buildings and such.

Ofc, Since then other artists are keep working on it up to this very moment.

May I ask why? Considering that the rest looked so pretty I doubt Highland Hill decorations deserved to be axed.

There is a fountain in the Eastern Tower that raises any stat back to 9, but honestly the best thing to do would be to head to the Temple of Bark. There are plenty of stat potions throughout, 4 barrels of +10 all stats +10 magical aging, and in the 4th level there is a fountain that is +20 all stats permanent. There are also a bunch of barrels of Green Liquid (+5 endurance permanent) in the Castleview Sewer. Endurance is actually one of the easier stats to get more of.

If you aren't enjoying it you can skip to 6-8 and even come back later if you want. The end of World of Xeen ends the first part of the franchise and has nothing to do with the later games outside of some references, particularly in 7.

Clouds on the other hand is basically less than half a game and things don't really pick up until Darkside. The level 20 cap in Clouds keeps you from the type of large tough battles you may be looking for. If you are getting destroyed, chances are you shouldn't be there and probably need to upgrade your weapons. The only time that fights should really start being challenging for your level are once you get to the Dungeon of Lost Souls and later. You also might run into some issues with Giants if your weapons are crap (and use Hypnotize for those obnoxious Armadillos).

The Dungeon of Lost Souls is the one with the Minotaurs and yes the message is there. I feel they punish you by capping your level at 50 before sending you here and that's the only reason it can be hard.

The Dungeon of Death is on Cloudside which he tells you. Level 1 is idiotic (giant crossword puzzle with no enemies) but after that it's one of the hardest places in the game. If you don't have problems with the enemies there you shouldn't have any issues (unless you decide to go bother the Megadragon) until you finish Darkside and start the Unification questline.

I guess I was pretty lucky to find Tome of Earth Magic (don't ask me how, the last time I played the campaign was almost three years ago).
I basically buttfucked Lord Haart directly out of the central island (and stole his capital) by the first day of third week and cleaned everything by the first day of the second month except the sole Necro city in the underground (that my main hero could conquer that same day).

At least to me, coming in from other strategy games, the first and foremost thing to keep in mind is that Homm has weird 'stacking' limits. You can only fight with one hero at a time. That hero can only have at most 7 different creatures in his army. Those creatures, however, can be of unlimited amounts. It takes up no more room in the army to have 1 titan as it does to have 1000 titans.

So especially if you only have 1 town, you have a real incentive to concentrate all or at least almost all of your forces into one hero who becomes your main guy and has the bulk of your power. If you have 5 heroes on a medium size map, under no circumstances give each of them 1/5th of your army and have them each pursuing different objectives every which way. Focus and smash things with overwhelming force, get your XP concentrated, so at the end you have a super-army.

Corollary #1. The movement points of your main hero are one of your most important strategic assets and need to be rationed accordingly. Don't have him wandering off scouting, don't have him wasting time. Advance in as shortest a path as you can get him from fight to fight and only deviate for stat boosts or witch huts that you know have useful skills. Functions like scouting, picking up resources once you've cleared the monsters guarding them, and ferrying reinforcements should be delegatd to your other heroes who usually should only have 1 fast/cheap unit each.

Corollary #2. That major army is your biggest single investment of resources, not your cities. It's okay to lose cities. It's not okay to lose your main army. And if you have a choice between smashing an opponent's main army and taking his capital, 9/10ths of the time, crushing the army is the way to go.

1/2

>> No.4958154

>>4958093

Building prioritization early should be on your dwellings. Even if you don't recruit from them right away, just having them there means your manpower starts to accumulate. Getting the gold buildings is a much lower priority most of the time, and in the first few weeks your main source of income should be looting as you explore the map.

Which itself is very important. The faster you creep along, the more resources you'll absorb, the more XP you'll get and the faster you can build up and strike your enemies. Always attack neutral stacks the second you think you can do so with minimal (ideally zero) losses, even if they aren't guarding something you want. But at the same time, you should prioritize, remember the movement limitations of your main hero. Don't grab resources willy-nilly. Figure out what you need to get your dwellings up quickly, and be sure to grab those first.

If you can do that, by the time you run into main heroes of the other players, you should be the one with the biggest army and the best hero, at which point winning the Big Battle is much more straightforward.

Try to get a school, any school, up to expert ASAP. My personal ranking would be Earth>Air>Water>Fire, but there is some disagreement on that score. But in any case, even if your main hero only has 1 power and 1 knowledge, expert level in a school means that you can cast spells on an entire army instead of one dude at a time. Haste and slow are to me especially important because they're the most suited to taking down the neutral stacks without losses and thus enabling the faster creep which I attach super-high importance to. Direct damage spells are rarely worth it, buffing your forces and cursing the enemy are almost always far more efficient uses of your 1 spell a round limit.

Those are the ultra-ultra basics, the way I see it.

Finally finished it, and I have real mixed feelings. Like the game was a lot of fun and all, but in general the end game was very underwhelming. Uniting the worlds was more really annoying than fun, and the final cutscene was... underwhelming. I guess I'm glad that MOST of the mysteries of the past game was explained (most of it through a straight up text dump in the escape pod) but I don't know.... I guess I expected more?

Whatever, the game was still fun, and nobody really talks about any pre 6 games anyways, so clearly the new ones are much better.

If you haven't been to Mist then you can head there. Outside there is quite a bit of loot on the teleporter islands. The enemies in the dungeon are pretty hard, but most of them don't have spells and there are some nice long hallways to kite with. Plus you pick up the super easy Sorcerer promotion quest.

If you have done that then your next step is probably to head to Free Haven for equipment and spell upgrades. Town Portal and Fly are your top priorities, but Starburst and Power Cure will help you a lot if you have the spell points for them.

There are a few fetch quests you can take care of now such as the Knight and Priest first promotions and capturing the Prince of Thieves is pretty easy. You are basically building toward Water Magic level 12 at which point you will be able to Town Portal to any city and set Lloyd's Beacons at the places you can't portal to.

>> No.4973232

Also if you don't have the gold for spells you can hire a Merchant/Duper which are in houses west of the mind guild. The expert merchant trainer is in the city as well.

If you are completely broke you can head to the sewers. There are some sewer grates that will give you gold/trap/nothing/key. The key will end the RNG and allow you entry into a little room in the top center with what is usually some really good stuff for your level (but the grates have limited charges so try to get the key at some point).

Master is enough for your Cleric. Basically once you get to this point get 1 person up in Light to about 10-15, then transition to dark. For everyone else boost up nothing but Dark until near the very end with Blasters (aside from the obvious miscellaneous skills to master). Shrapmetal spam with Lloyd's Beacon portaling to heal will destroy almost anything in the game, especially once you get master level 10 or so and it scales better than any other spell in the game. At some point you can decide to add more into body if you feel you need it, but you probably don't have enough hp to justify it with a CSSS team.

Air is mildly useful, but since master only takes rank 4 you are better off with even more dark magic.

One thing that H6 and Ashan in general did wrong is that its creatures for no real reason were too setting-specific. Like, what the fuck is a Sun Crusader. What the fuck is Blazing Glory? Celestial? Why not just call it an Angel? What the hell is a Juggernaut and why can't you name it by species. What's wrong with good old Ogre? Any time you try to come up with something dumb like that it just falls flat. When you see "elf", "gnome", "gremlin", "satyr", "unicorn" in older games it instantly evokes an image of a fantasy creature that everybody knows, and can understand, here it's like some 14 years old first fantasy fanfiction project.

HotA has the shades of this too, unfortunately. What's the difference between Nix and lizard people? What the fuck is a Sea Witch? Am I supposed to believe "sea dogs" is an army stack? Too specific and butts heads with existing concepts. Well, at least it's not five dwarves, godzilla and a bear. Keep this shit simple, dude.

M&M never had much of lore, it was always a generic D&D campaign (literally, Crag the Hack was the name of JWC's D&D character) which is partly why it held such universal appeal. You could make a generic fantasy campaign in Heroes 3 because the content was 90% free of setting markings; I'm convinced this is why Forge never materialized or why Inferno utilizes basically nothing of Kreegan design you see in MM6 and MM7. Vessels of the will of Elrath, the Dragon-God of Light, Radiant Glories are shining spirits who can flare into brilliance and blind their enemies. In the Spirit Realm, Elrath’s dominion is filled with myriads of these creatures. They are often sent as envoys and advisors to Elrath’s most faithful followers. The generals of the Holy Empire soon found a use for these beings of burning light.
The Blazing Glory is a Radiant Glory that has been elevated by Elrath to a higher status. Directly exposed to the immaculate aura of the Dragon-God of Light, they are considered to be the manifestation of righteousness. They are greatly feared in battle, for in order to defeat one of them, one must find a good moral reason, or be cursed with guilt for eternity.

Ubisoft really did their best to turn Heroes into the most generic shit out there. Not that NWC's wacky sci-fi elements were somehow better but they at least tried to spice things up.

>, it was always a generic D&D campaign
It might be, but the focus on murder hobo as a core aspect is important.
As is the effort to get as much stuff as possible from the monster manual and myths, and actually present it well. On top of recycling content from their other series, and do a great cross franchise porting of various designs.

So you boulder trough Gorgons, Dragons, Harpies, Beholders, Giants, Angels, knights, bandits, crazy elementals, cyclops, ogres, trolls, orcs, goblins, skeletons, vampires, etc etc etc.
And trough all this, its just a massive murderhobo campaign, with a shitty GM that has a reasonable end goal.
Some of them fun of Heroes is how extremely total war the games end up playing, with no heed to logistics or politics. Its just you, your army, and trying to not get mangled as the land is literally mined for all resources including experience diplomacy.
I am just saying:
UbiHOMM do not present itself as such. Even if a lot of concepts is straight ripped, there isn't the same level of madness or escalation.

It's basically a light elemental. MM7 and 8 had those, not with the boobs though.
Also isn't it weird how MM6 was the first game to have Light and Dark magic, but never really explained where those spells come from. MM7 at least had Celeste and Temple of the sun. And Homm never added those schools until 5 too.

Well not formally, but it's hard to argue that from HoMM4 isn't light and especially that Death isn't dark magic. Within MM6 some of the npc text suggests that light is the magic of the gods and dark is the magic of power at any cost, although it isn't confirmed if there is any kind of dark god which would be more standard D&D. Sacrifice in MM7 would suggest there probably is though.

If you are interested in lore though you might want to check out the MM2 manual which talks about the history of the elementals and the MM3 manual which briefly goes over the separate gods relating to the classes in that game.

But I really preferred the Haven line up of 6 to the abomination that was 7. It actually felt like Haven but in 7 its obvious those units are wolf dutchy units exclusively which is lame.

From my experience, I can say that Cleric is not a good choice

The best option is to choose Druid instead

So the best team is Druid and 3 Sorcerers

You shouldn't be using offensive self magic spells, period. Clerics are weaker early game and stronger late game because of how OP Shrapmetal is. Basically there is no reason to have a character without it once you know the game. Since bows can carry you through most of the early game you don't gain anything by giving up a character for it. You need at least 1 dedicated healbot most of the game anyway and any points you are giving to a druid might as well go toward body so you give up better armor for better weapon skills. After that it is about having another air/water versus another light/dark and the latter choice is way better. Also the Druid promotion quests are obnoxious. What the fuck were they thinking?

I just finished HoMM 1 and am about to move on to HoMM 2 (First time playing the series). HoMM 1 wasn't too bad outside of the final mission, but the suiciding armageddon heroes made me want to uninstall and move on. In the final mission it even made me savescum battles so I could somehow kill off all their units before they got that fucking spell off.

I've heard it's also a spell in later titles. Is it as annoying? How are you meant to play around it? And do most people savescum/is it a necessary strat for some of the harder campaigns?

Ok cheers, I'll just have to try and adapt as I go. It's just really frustrating that enemy heroes with a single gargoyle (or other fast creature) could do massive amounts of damage to my army, killing a whole stack of tier 1 units, half my archers etc. before I could even get a single spell off to stop them. Even if I did, antimagic only works on a single stack.

Maybe I should have made some fodder heroes with weaker armies to bait these armageddon heroes into suiciding on something other than my main force.

Is mostly just about MM6 where there are places for druids but they just aren't as useful late game. In MM7 the effects are even bigger as you lose out on Power Cure, GM Regeneration, GM Protection From Magic, and GM Light/Dark. That is before we get into some of the spirit spells whose direction is garbage without GM like preservation and bless.

The dark promotion for druid is among the hardest in the game as it requires you to have gone to Eeofol and even then the dragon doesn't do all that much. Even on the Light Path the Arch Druid quest doesn't get you much. GM mediation on a class that can't learn GM magics or any light/dark ends up being a waste and black potions can be bought at vendors. Oh and on DSSS versus CSSS you also lose out on merchant GM and any meaningful repair skill. Druids are simply a weaker class. They do pretty well early but doesn't scale at all.

Yes but most of the time they don't look that much different from normal clerics. In MM7 your Cleric can be promoted to one on the dark path. For the earlier games the Clerics of Moo (MM3) and Yak (MM4) are clearly designed to be evil aligned but they are just normal enemies.

As for HoMM they really only exist in 4 and are one many of the class specializations and have a campaign based around one in the Gathering Storm expansion. Most of the Necromancers are wizards and Heretics are more chaos aligned than dark.

I'd have a hard time disagreeing with you, but then again, Heroes III was my first HoMM game I ever played, so nostalgia is certainly influencing my decision. However, I'd say each HoMM III battle theme is appropriate for a particular encounter. Here's how I look at them:
Battle theme 1 - early fights with neutral monsters or a fight between two weak heroes:
Battle theme 2 - a definitive 'fuck their shit up' theme mandatory for sieges and fights in which you overpower your enemies, be they enemy heroes or large stacks of neutral monsters [my favorite]:
Battle theme 3 - a balanced combat between two strong heroes or a even fight against a larger stacks of higher-leveled neutral monsters:
Battle theme 4 - a 'last stand' kind of theme when defending against sieges, encountering heroes that overpower your own forces or fighting against a tough monster stack - all of will result with you losing almost all of army (or just losing outright):

Honorable mentions from other HoMM games (excluding Ubi's because I honestly can't remember their battle themes) are the following:

That being said, the campaigns have a lot more stacks than a normal mission would have that are either set to auto attack you regardless of odds or to auto-join you, making diplomacy somewhat less useful.

>> No.5014778

>>5012446
Even if 90% of stacks are set to "Kill, maim, burn" that still leaves all the neutral stacks. And most of the stacks set to random units.
And that still leaves the enormous stacks of "Month of Gargoyles" that spawn, meaning any +1 month campaign has potential to turn into massive recruitment of the extreme amount of spawned units.

For some obscure reason, you are only able to see the detailed version when choosing to play a random map. You still get the small window when playing regular scenarios. Whether this a bug or intentional design choice, I have no idea, but it's definitely annoying as fuck. The only reason I could see this was done was because some scenarios start with your hero having a fixed army and a higher level (something like "Adventures of Jared Haret" or "Knee Deep in the Dead") and they weren't sure how to implement it in that window.

Since we seem to have segued into Disciples 2, how do you play the Mountain Clans? I just hate how slow their initiative is, I always win fights, but I always take so much damage doing it. >Since we seem to have segued into Disciples 2, how do you play the Mountain Clans?
That depends one whether you're playing a saga or a single scenario.

Picking a Warrior Lord makes the most sense for smaller scenarios because you start with a King's Guard (the beefiest melee hero with highest attack) and the passive 15% healing per day is a godsend for a faction with no healers and only one healing spell.
For scenarios that involve playing on 72x72 or 96x96 maps, I'd say picking a Guild Lord or a Mage Lord is equally viable, though for different reasons. Picking the former allows you to upgrade cities at a 50% discount which means you can turtle up much more easily and heal your Engineer-led party faster after covering more ground than any other Clan hero, and you actually have a reason to hire arguably the best Thieves in the game (thanks to their higher health pool that can allow them to challenge Rod planters 1-on-1 and win) since now you can also use them to perform advanced actions. The latter pick enables you to cast spells twice at half the cost, meaning you can cast Healing, Forestwalk, Seafaring and Chant of Hasting twice every single turn (if you have enough mana for it, which you should have at the later stages of the game) and starts you off with a Loremaster that can turn into a one-slot version of the Elder One when he acquires enough levels, decent artifacts and gets buffed by your Archdruidess at the start of each fight.

Saga is a different animal altogether since you can pick whatever Lord you want and discard the starting hero in favor of another one without crippling yourself too much in the long run. Personally, however, I love sticking with my starting hero till the end of the saga. Also, I feel that Loremaster and Engineer scale much better than the King's Guard and the best artifacts you acquire throughout the saga favor the former two (Ring of the Ages and Boots of Seven Leagues). I can expand on that a bit more if you'd like.

Please do.
No problem - hope you like long walls of text!

So, let's start about the units themselves. Now, we can talk shit about Mountain Clans all we want but they're the only faction whose unit roster offers all 4 elemental damage sources (Air, Earth, Fire and Water), which makes their unit composition very flexible. In comparison, Empire, Legion and Hordes only have one (Air for the former one, Fire for the latter two - in fact, having access to Fire source damage through using Lich Queen is practically mandatory for Undead Saga) and the Elves have three (Air, Fire and Water); however, all four have access to Death damage source, which is something Mountain Clans lack. Giant tree is very versatile and enables you to either spec into Sons of Ymir (who are mandatory for conquering Capitols because of their frostbite-inflicting attack) or into beefy Elder Giants. Likewise, their frontline one-slot units are also beefy as fuck and when you upgrade them to Rune Masters or Hermits/Wolf Lords (Dwarf Kings are redundant) and buff them with the Archdruidess, they can wreck shit as well. Their archer tree is lackluster, which is why you should use Engineers and Loremasters in the first place. Units from the mage tree will either buff your attack or let you attack twice in one turn, both choices having their advantages and drawbacks - the Archdruidess would be generally considered a better pick unless you rely on a unit's secondary effects more for whatever reason (e.g. your Engineer has the Hag's Ring or Soul Crystal, so picking the Alchemist allows you to Polymorph or Paralyze two units in one turn instead of one).
Basically, you can mix and match to your heart's content.

Spells are primarily oriented on buffing your party's movement speed as well as their armor and attack, which makes this faction great for Capitol sieges (they are still not as good as Empire, Hordes or Legions are). Summon and damage spells are decent, so not much to say about them.

>> No.5025565

>>5025506
At least in my experience though, short of savescumming, that degree of flexibility is very hard to use. Extra elemental types of damage are only useful if you run into something with a ward or an immunity to the type you're packing; and it's often hard to know what that is. Combined with the AI being too dumb to use that sort of prophylactic magic, and the need to pick your upgrades often well in advance, and that sort of versatility means less than just raw power in the form of things like damage, HP, initiative value.

Furthermore, assuming you're going with a mage hero (I am for this slow slogging saga), unless you think you're going to run into somethign that's immune to the earth singer, you're probably best off using your mage hero with a pair of support casters to boost his damage and/or give him extra attacks. Getting any of the giant types precludes at least one of these boosters, and if you want elemental damage, taht means taking the right path on fighter upgrade selection, which takes away your physical damage. In fact, that's why, although I haven't gotten there in the Saga yet, that the Dwarf Kings are probably the best of the lot for them, I need defense, not offense, in that front line.

Also, I generally thought that the undead were the best for the capital attacks; all that paralysis in your front line means you can stunlock the god forever. But without that, Iv'e found that capital attacks are all about getting a major hero up to nigh invincible status, 90 armor, and then something to either stunlock the god or give your hero lifesteal so he can trade body blows with the thing that's got 900 HP.

5025590

>>5025506
And finally, the heroes! To preface this, I've played through the Mountain Clans saga twice - first time (more than a decade ago, so forgive me for not remembering how I spec'd him) playing as a Mage Lord with my main hero being a Loremaster, second time (a few years ago) as a Guild Lord with my main being an Engineer. Someone who has played with a King's Guard as their main is welcome to share their own experience with the saga.

So, what do you want to achieve with these two heroes?
Well, you use the Engineer to cover ground very quickly and in combat he serves to one-shot any back-row unit that can cause you problems while letting your beefier units absorb the brunt of the attack. As a Loremaster, you can mitigate the movement issues by using movement-enhancing spells but a much longer time investment is required to level him up and equip him properly - however, the end result is that you get a unit that is able to inflict around 300 damage across the board (unless the unit is immune to Earth damage) when properly supported with various artifacts and the Archdruidess' +100% damage buff.

The artifacts you will get throughout the vanilla saga will drastically enhance your movement speed (Boots of Seven Leagues - +60% movement for hero), damage and/or initiative (Ring of Ages [+40% damage and +25% initiative for hero]; Ring of Strength [+20% damage for hero]; Banner of War [+20% damage for all]; Banner of Speed [+10% initiative for all]), which you can transfer along with your hero to the "Guardians of the Light" expansion saga. Boots of Seven Leagues are found in the last scenario of the vanilla saga but I can't remember where you get the Ring of Ages; however make sure you get both.

A word of advice - when playing with Mountain Clans make sure you don't buff the hero's initiative so they end up with a higher initiative than your Archdruidess (fixed 70 Initiative) because you want your hero to get the +100% damage buff from her before they attack.

>that sort of versatility means less than just raw power in the form of things like damage, HP, initiative value
That is true, that's why Mountain Clans aren't considered to be the best in the game.

>you're probably best off using your mage hero with a pair of support casters ... Getting any of the giant types precludes at least one of these boosters
Unless you get an Alchemist or a Druidess right of the bat in a scenario (check the pic in this post >>5025590) which enables you to develop the other branch of the mage tree, only one caster is needed. This means you still have space for one two-slot unit (preferably a Son of Ymir for reasons I mentioned above).

>the Dwarf Kings are probably the best of the lot for them, I need defense, not offense, in that front line
I'd have to disagree on this one. You see, Dwarf Kings have 250 HP, 30 Armor, Mind and Water Wards and inflict 100 damage while Rune Masters have 300 HP, no armor or wards and can attack twice for 65 damage each. However, Dwarf Kings have 20 Initiative (in comparison, Rune Masters have 40 initiative), which means they will be the last one to act (and thus, enter a defensive stance). Also, don't forget Clans have access to the largest number of armor-boosting spells, so that 30 Armor value can actually become redundant.

>I generally thought that the undead were the best for the capital attacks
They are AFAIK, though a similar effect can be achieved by using a set of Incubi (polymorph is useless on the Guardian) casting Petrify (65% hit chance). Empire is also amazing since you can buff your armor with spells as well with potions and then simply waltz in with a party that contains the Prophetess and set the combat to auto-resolve.

>Iv'e found that capital attacks are all about getting a major hero up to nigh invincible status
Although that's the one way to do it, having a unit in your buffed party that can apply a damage-over-time status effect (not reduced by armor) is a better option IMO.

>How did you get both an archdruidess and an alchemist in the same party?

Continuing from this post (>>5025652) - the first pic as well as this one shows you what a fully buffed party with a lvl 11 Assassin and a lvl 9 Prophetess can do. This setup only gets more and more OP the more you level it. For example, in the last mission of the "Guardians of the Light" expansion saga I ended up with an lvl 31 assassin that could inflict 165 base damage and 125 poison damage (you can outright kill a Guardian with the poison damage in less than 7 turns), a lvl 19 Prophetess that could heal 150 damage and three lvl 19 Holy Avengers that could hit for 150 damage twice in a row each, not to mention my lvl 18 Archmage that had a 180 AOE attack that applied Paralysis (from the Soul Crystal artifact you get in the first few missions in vanilla campaign).
The speed by which you can level up your Assassin and how well the unit scales is also the main reason why picking a Ranger to be your main when playing through the Empire saga is a bad choice overall.

I can give you more examples if you want, though I feel we might be derailing the thread a bit.

I suspect others might not share the same opinion as you, but since the thread was on page 7 just half an hour ago I guess we can keep it alive by talking about it.
Here's my favorite party composition simply because of how silly and overpowered it is: a literal Death squad surrounding the Lich Queen. I could basically instant-resolve more than 90% of the fights in the later stages of the Undead Saga without getting injured. The pic also shows why the Lich Queen is so important - a good part of Undead Saga will have you fight other undead units, and since all undead units are immune to Death damage source and some of them even being immune to physical damage, you'll get into an awkward situation in which both you and the enemy can't hurt each other. Then you need to use items or spells to resolve the stalemate, which is boring as fuck.

>>5027082
>I like the Disciples post but I don't understand a thing
Well, have you ever played the game? If not, then it's understandable all of this might look like gibberish to you. It's a fun and quirky TBS game, just like HoMM is. but there are quite a lot of differences between the two that include but are not limited to:
preselecting a Lord that influences the passive bonuses or special perks you get access to; diplomacy system (albeit not very useful in most scenarios); four types of heroes that can be killed in the field (but also resurrected in certain condition), one of which is used to 'flag' mines; parties led by heroes (or other units in special cases) that are limited by the number of slots (one unit can take up one or two slots); units that can be upgraded in various ways, a fixed battle grid in which you can't move units during combat; much more developed adventure map spells that can be used to summon units, buff your party, debuff the enemy or outright damage their units and many other things that'll be apparent when you start playing the game.

There are some bugs although the whole thing can be completed, but the biggest issue is that if you start anywhere but Jadame you will eventually be pushed into the MM7 style Light or Dark choice as MM6 characters are banned from Dark Magic. The fetch quests for the combined parts are a bit tedious. Blasters are as broken as ever. Bow recovery reduction is capped at 30 instead of 5(MM7) or 0(MM8), so they never really reach their potential.

If you finished the "To Strive, To Seek" mission (with Gelu and Gem) before "Barbarian Brothers" (pic related), then you just have two scenarios remaining - "Union" and "The Fall of Sandro" (the latter scenario being really short).
However, when you're done with that scenario, then you get access to "Specter of Power" (which is composed out of 4 rather mediocre and forgettable scenarios).

>I haven't really tried D2. I think I have it on GoG, though, so I just have to install it
Well, I haven't really tried D3 so I might have to do the same! But yeah, D2 is a game that, just like HoMM3, has aged really well. Sure, the game has it's kinks and rough patches but it still looks and sounds lovely. Do try it out sometimes!
Just a warning - when you buy the "Disciples 2 Gold" edition from GOG, you will get two versions of the game: "Dark Prophesy and Gallean's Return" and "Rise of the Elves". The "Rise of the Elves" version contains the vanilla sagas as well as the expansion saga (with Elves) but lacks the "Gallean's Return" saga which allows you to import a hero you played with (along with the OP artifacts you've found during those missions) in the vanilla saga.
I personally played the first version for the vanilla and expansion saga and then switched to the other version to do the Elven saga and play single scenarios.

Not him, but the only reason I remember it at all I that I misinterpreted "With Blinders On" to not be a rather standard campaign mission where you can't lose the designated hero. I thought that if I lost a battle with any hero ,even my stupid supply ones with 1 skeleton, I'd lose. That in turn led to a lot of disbanding my heroes needlessly because I saw an enemy that might come and hit them.

And even without being a massive step back from the epic that was the final action with all the combination artifacts, trying to make Sandro indirectly responsible for EVERYTHING that happened in the previous campaigns was just stupid. It shrinks the world, you know?

All the talk about Disciples 2 made me give it a shot. I started the Legions of the Damned campaign and found the first mission pretty difficult even on normal difficulty. I thought it was highly trial and error and I had to savescum. I don't know if my party just sucked, I was using a mage leader accompanied by a witch and a demon and the Dwarf parties often just seem too powerful for them and I'd have to soften them up with Beliarh summons.

I did like that it was short and focused compared to the only campaign mission of HoMM 3 I bothered to try, Long Live the Queen, which seemed to be just a senseless mopping up of a map that took forever to clear.

Is there a way to skip to this point or would I have to attempt to recover the data from hard drive if I want to avoid playing the entire thing again once I get a new machine?

Looking at the map, its not the one I was thinking of so I'm probably referring to the yog and crag scenario before this one, had 5 necro towns around the outskirts of the map with black borders between them, 2 behemoth crags and 2 cyclops caves on the map which is how I managed to last 4 months and still eventually win. Just in case that's relevant to how I might skip ahead.

Well, you can use the cheat 'nwcredpill' to instantly win any specific scenario but that doesn't level up your hero, so you'll need to use 'nwcneo' cheat. However, this gives you a 'CHEATER!' rating on the high-score screen.
If you want, you can use my own HoMM save files I uploaded on zippyshare for you - all you need to do is to download it and unzip it your "Games" folder (though it's obvious my heroes might have different secondary skills than yours would have). Here's the link to it:

I think Death should have a true neutral alignment but, that being said, it's not like you can put Death in the same faction Elves or Dwarves are.

I agree. The motives of each faction should've been disparate and frequently clash with each other. Coincidentally, that's one of the things Disciples 2 did well.

>>5029925

That's any TBS game for you. Until you get familiar with the game mechanics, you WILL make critical mistakes and die miserably.

>I was using a mage leader accompanied by a witch and a demon and the Dwarf parties often just seem too powerful for them
Starting a Saga with a Mage hero (in your case Archmage) is always tricky and doing so with Legions is doubly so because they don't have any regeneration spells whatsoever. This scenario is also one of the rare ones in which you have to complete an objective in a certain time limit (it takes about 35-40 turns for your main target to arrive to a north-eastern corner of the map, which loses you the scenario). Dwarves are also just bulky as fuck so you need a lot of firepower (summons, spells etc) to wear them down. Don't shy away from outright suiciding your junk heroes at your target to soften their units up a little bit before you finish them off with your main hero (the one you'll transfer to the next scenario along with the artifacts you find). Be sure to stick around because the next mission let's you control one of the most OP unique units in the game (pic related).

>I did like that it was short and focused compared to the only campaign mission of HoMM 3 I bothered to try
Try out "Armaggedon's Blade" or "Shadow of Death" campaigns then - they're a bit more interesting than the ones in "Restoration of Erathia".

Yep, "Specter Of Power" campaign in which you see how Sandro helped Lord Haart poison King Gryphonheart, as well as assisting Nighon Overlords and the Kreegans to invade Erathia. Kinda bland and short, but since you're there, why not complete it?
>I got to the one at the end of restoration of erathia and was fairly puzzled by it ... seemed unnecessary and didn't really add to the story in any way
Technically, it sort of did. In the Might & Magic universe you have an area on the continent of Antagarich (where everything in HoMM III happens) called "the Contested Lands" because both AvLee (Elves) and Erathia (Humans) claim to have rights to that territory. In that scenario, you are essentially declaring independence which plays a part in M&M7 when you actually become a ruler of Harmondale.

Well, the only flying Guild Lord hero is the Counselor and I have never picked him as a main, so that's why I forgot flyer heroes could equip boots. After all, as fliers, they can only benefit from boots that increase the percentage of total movement points. So, if you could stick Boots of the Seven Leagues on Counselor, that would be amazing, but in the entire Legions Saga (vanilla and the expansion) the only useful boots that you could find are Boots of Travelling (40% increase in base movement points), which is not bad, but as amazing as Boots of the Seven Leagues that are available in Mountain Clan, Undead Horde (btw, playing as anything else than Lich Queen is not recommended) and Elven Alliance campaigns.

If we include the Heroes Chronicles set of campaigns, the strict chronological order by which you should play them (according to some turbonerds on forums: celestialheavens.com/forum/10/9449) should look like this:

01. Heroes Chronicles: Warlord of the Wasteland
02. Heroes Chronicles: Conquest of the Underworld
03. Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters
04. Heroes Chronicles: Master of the Elements
05. Heroes Chronicles: The World Tree
06. Heroes Chronicles: The Fiery Moon
07. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
08. Foolhardy Waywardness campaign from Armageddon's Blade*
09. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
10. Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade (except last campaign, see above)
11. Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons
12. Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost

*Foolhardy Waywardness campaign is not accessible unless you complete the previous five campaigns in Armageddon's Blade, so the Armageddon's Blade expansion is anachronistic by default.

I, however, would recommend that you play the game in order by which they were released:

01. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
02. Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade
03. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
04-12. (Optional) All eight Heroes Chronicles episodes, starting with Warlord of the Wasteland and ending with The Sword of Frost

As for individual campaigns in each expansion, do them in whatever order you want, but make sure you use the end save (you're prompted to create after completing the last mission in a campaign) to start the next one because some scenarios are locked and you'll be unable to access them unless you beat all the previous ones using the same save file. You will know you did this correctly if you can see a check mark on the picture(s) of the campaign(s) you've just finished (pic related).

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. I think the Empire saga is arguably the easiest one thanks to their versatile buffing spells (Haste being a poor man's Chant of Hasting) and by how OP healing ability is.

>haste is twice stronger and thrice cheaper and you can spam it almost every turn as soon as you capture one death node
You probably referring to the Chant of Hasting (+100% max movement regen), Hasting is the name of the spell used by Empire (+50% max movement regen). Now, I presume that playing as a Mage Lord with a Engineer main hero would be OP as fuck since you could cast the chant twice in a row on a hero that eventually gets access to the Boots of the Seven Leagues (+60% increase in base movement) in the saga. I played as a Guild Lord, so I haven't tried that combination out.
>They also give you life drain artifact which makes said hero archer just unkillable
The amount of life you drain isn't that high as far as I remember. However, if you have a high enough armor (which Clans do), I suppose you can stay alive for a ridiculously long time. Again, I prefer the Empire saga since you can acquire the Soul Crystal in the third mission of the game.

If you're talking about Disciples II, I can direct you to this wikia (skip the Short History section):
TL;DR: You have access to weapon-immune units and units that can inflict paralysis (OP as fuck) so use both whenever possible, using the Lich Queen hero as your main in the Saga is almost mandatory, you have no healing spells so you'll need to manage your encounters as to avoid soaking up too much damage and being forced to return to the city for healing (this kinda doesn't apply if you play as a Warrior Lord).

the main two differences from homm series are:
-the terrain must be "Controlled" by you for mines and other resources to work, the terrain controlled spreads automatically each turn from your cities and from control rods that special type of heroes can place. On pic rel you can see the green terrain spreading from the capital, and it already reached the crystal
-instead of having stacks of units, 10 unicorncs, 20 dragons and so on, you get one unit in each slot, they can level up to a better type if you have proper buildings, and be ressurected if needed. I actually prefer that system as it prevents deathstacks

>> No.5044887

>>5044869
Yeah, I figured out that much, but what confuses me is how you're supposed to play. Like, I understand you have one capital that you can actually unlock and and several smaller cities, but ressources seem to be really limited, all units seem extremely weak, and XP seems to be a really limited ressource.

>> No.5044898

eh, been a while, but from what I recall at least early on the best way was to focus on one "main" hero (you can keep between missions), taking your time to get the upgrades for units and shit while covering all the terrain you can

What are you talking about? Disciples is even more dominated by deathstacks than something like homm. Only instead of quantity, it's driven by quality. Do you know how many groups of 4 2nd level dudes you'd need to take out say a 5 stack of a level 5 hero (any type) and a quartet of level 4 goons backing him up?

XP is your primary bottleneck in Disciples, and there's not enough of it to go around to do anything but build a single doomstack and a few support units.

>>5044887
Yes, welcome to the game. Expect to spend significant amounts of time running back to your cities and your capital to rest and heal. You're not doing anything wrong if you have to break off from conquering in order to re-trench. Try to do it so that you won't be hit by an enemy stack when your main army is in a state of temporary weakness.

what I mostly mean that at least there is a celling there. You can't grind for 100, 1000 of dragons. Once you reach top tier with your unit's - that's it. Only your unit choice and tactics matter now. In HOMM both you and your enemies can improve infinitely, getting another and another pack of units each week per each town and so on.

The true horrors of Heroes III is that map resources are limited, so its a race to get some deathstacks online, so you can start taking resources and building a backnbone.

So what if there is? It's been a long time since I played Homm 3 multiplayer, and I haven't played any single player map that didn't come with the 3 official games/expansions, but I can't ever remember a time when building an ultrastack like that was necessary and not just a vanity project. You're not playing a turn based strategy if you're doing that, you're playing Sim City in Homm.

>>5046963
>But its not really possible to recover from losing said deathstacks past month 2, where you need to abuse Armageddon as the only alternative.
Not him, but I would argue the point of irrecovability is way earlier than that. Like week 2-3.'

>>5047625
But what I think he's going for is that short of waiting at your opponent's capital to beat up their level 1 dudes, the amount of XP in a level is limited. Unless there's a trainer (and I suppose even then, since you can't actually gain a level with them), you will eventually hit a limit as to how strong you can grow your main strack.

well, for me when I was playing HOMM it usually is

>now I have taken the first town/objective, I should push forward but there is another wave of reinforcements waiting back home, I will "just quickly" pick them up
>oh, another week starts in just two days...
Or I just turtle for several weeks doing fuck all but collecting troops and then steamrolling everything because enemies in campaign have a set amount of units or just collect them from one city each while I put units from 3 into a single army. Having potentially unlimited forces if you just wait is distracting. Or maybe it is just for me.

There's one more thing I liked about the "single units instead of stacks" approach which is that you can fully recover after battles. You don't bleed out your numbers taking on that annoying ranged units stack with great initiative, and even if you just barely won with like one troop standing, you can get back to exactly where you were with resurrections and healing in few turns tops. I guess it'd probably suck for multiplayer, but I never really played it.

8 is still a solid game and worth a play, but it will feel like a step down from 6 and 7. As indicated in the paste in, it was intended as an expansion to 7 and will have a lot of gameplay mechanic overlap, but some of the later dungeons are uninspiring and early dragons break the game.

9 was released pre-alpha according to the devs and ends up being the skeleton of a decent game, but the parts just aren't all there. It isn't in the worst games of all time category like some may treat it as, but it just isn't good and unless you are a completionist skip it.

laugh out loud, I just found a way to revive yourself from lich status

so basicly I was fucking around with the reanimate spell a bit which normaly is used to make zombies out of enemy corpses so they can fight for you, but if you use this spell on a death party member you revive him as a zombie instead.
So I thought: "hmm... can I zombiefy my lich in some way?"
Turns out you can't, the lich has no zombie form but then something strange was happening.

foreword
Basicly before I tested my lich theory, I tested the reanimate spell on my mortals and one time as two of my men (those on the left) got zombified the character portrait of the second man overrode the portrait of the first party member upon healing in the temple BUT only the portrait, the inventory bodyshoot was still the same.

I suspect the reason for this is that there is only one male and one female zombie portrait, so to say every man and woman in this game shares one gender specific zombie image, that is what probably fucks around with the normal portraits as the game gets confused about which image should replace the zombie one so it just uses the human image of the last one who got zombiefied

remember that, it's gonna be important next

so now the real deal
I tried to reanimate my lich but it didn't work as they probably have no corresponding zombie portrait so I got dissapointed and zombiefied my female druid instead
So I got back to harmondale to revive my girls and then it happened.
I revived my druid (well more like de-zombiefied her) and then my lich.

The lich was resurected as zombie(?????)

seriously she had the zombie condition, that wasn't possible as I tested it myself but there it is.
So I beholded that freak of unholy nature and decided to heal her again in the temple.
I thought I get my lich back, instead my zombie-lich got revived as a human again. Not only that her portrait was human it was the same as it was before the lich promotion (so no image duplication as before) in her inventory screen she is shown as human as well, only her rank still states that she is a lich.
Is this a new finding, am I going insane, what the hell is going on here?

>>5060468
levels really don't matter that much in endgame, as soon you get spells like sharp metal and leroys beacon, they becomes trivial at best as you rather find ways to exploit the AI and the brocken as fuck magic system. But thats said that is even more the case in M&M 7 as the AI pathfinding is so bad they get stuck on every wall and you get even more overpowered spells like invisibility which let's you almost speedrun the game if you want to.

Grandmaster axe is bugged and without armsmaster it scales horribly. Rangers are ok early game (especially considering how easy the first promotion is), weak mid game, and awful late game.
Druids don't get GM so their spells are all weaker than their counterparts. This is particularly annoying in body (regen, protection from magic, and power cure) and water. Black potions can be bought in shops. Druids are strong early game, ok mid game, and weak late game because they just don't scale without those GM skills. You can beat the game with anything because it isn't particularly hard, but rangers are the worst class by far, and druids and thieves are also pretty bad in comparison to everything else.

Yes, both heroes are defeated and disappear from the adventure map. Same result if you only had summoned troops left by the end of the battle. Necromancy skill doesn't bypass this, as you can only raise new troops after being considered victorious.
Everything I said applies to a hero vs wandering creatures situation. As for creature banks, you will need to visit it a second time to claim your reward. You will be asked to fight the guards, search the graves, etc. but the battle will end as soon as it starts.

The results screen acts funny. When it's hero vs hero, the enemy hero's name will always be displayed in the "[Hero] abandons your cause" message. When I tried it with a crypt, my first hero was defeated by vampires but my second hero won against skeletons (no picture).

That's very kind of you to say. Still, it took me two months just to add that small village so I should probably start speeding up the process if I am to release it this year.
