Do N64 cartridges really have an electrolytic capacitor that will eventually dry out?

I would say your question is answered by your own picture.

Easily replaceable just like carts that have batteries.

>> No.4946725

Yes. They'll eventually die like all cartridges. Think how much undumped stuff is out there that will die before anyone ever finds it.

>>4946725
shit you'd never play anyway, and not for N64 because it had no games.

>> No.4946729

i haven't heard of capacitors dying at high levels in console carts. let's say it does die, it's a 1 minute fix. they're not surface mounted and not a bastard to swap out.

>>4946729
I find surface mounted caps easier to replace than through-hole, personally.

Electronics aren't magic, people. The caps are there to smooth out any hiccups in the power to the ICs. You could probably remove them and a cart would still work fine.

My stepbrother had it, brother rented it once. I enjoyed its colorful weapons and pen and ink mode. Are there any dino games with feathers? I want to see a cloud of proto-feathers when I shoot them.

Yes, but you could just replace the capacitor. Through hole components like that are insanely easy to work on even if you have little soldering experience.

I've had through hole capacitors not want to budge. It would have been hilarious if these were manufactured during the great capacitor plague.

>I've had through hole capacitors not want to budge.

Reflow lead based solder into them and put more heat into a fat tipped iron. High temp doesn't matter if you're fast. I set my soldering station at 475F to remove NES CPU and PPU. It's actually less stress on the board because you get in there and out quickly and the shitty old solder actually melts and can be removed. The CPU/PPU on toploaders are especially a bitch to work on, coupled with thin traces that are easily lifted if you're ham fisted.

Going at them at a lower temp just makes you hold the iron on the board longer, which is a bigger risk than higher temp quickly removed.
