4944708 No.4944708 [Reply] [Original]

Gonna start this thread and keep my fingers crossed.

So, last year I made a thread on here trying to draw attention to /vr/'s hidden gems on the NES. The thread got over 210 replies and images, lots of feedback. I saved the thread, and made my own checklist of what to try. After a year of only playing the justin gems, I'm happy to report the majority of the recommendations were damn good. The thread worked for me, and I have high hopes it worked for others.

So, in the spirit of that list, I'd like to create another one with the same intent, but for Playstation (PS1) games!

Please, anons, list out and briefly describe your personal hidden PS1 gems. I can tell you personally the details anons provided are what sold me on all the games I put on my list. I've tried below to create a greentext format of details that I humbly ask you provide. The more you sell anons on your gem, the more likely they are to have a new game and experience added to their gaming life. Hope things works as well as the last one, and I hope many anons benefit from it.

>Game Name
>Region
>Basic game genre description (fighter, FPS, action, etc)
>What game(s) is this similar to (if you like ______, you'll like this)
>Things you'll like about this game
>Any warnings/cautions/things you may not like about this game
>Personal fond memories you have if this game
>Why you think this game didn't receive more attention
>If, by chance, this game got a remake/remaster, is the remake/remaster worse than/as good as/better than the original, and why you think so

OP, all that info you want is unrealistic. So I'm just gonna post some good games with brief info on em. OK?
I'm mostly gonna post what I see as under appreciated games, and not ultra obscure shit.

Alundra. Basically the best AlttP rip off ever made. Definately worth it if you're a zelda fanatic and want something new.

N20. It's a tempest like game, but with morphing 3D levels and an OST by the crystal method.

Spider, the videogame. It's a sidescrolling platformer where you control a cybernetic spider. It's as interesting as it sounds, and hard as balls.

Evil Zone. Kind of a "meh" fighting game i terms of mechanics, but with a good cast, fast action and oddball (anime inspired) story for every character.

Trap Gunner. Basically powerstone, but not really. It's expensive now, but a great game.

Loaded. A top down shooter with tons of gore and tons of shit to shoot at.

Spawn the eternal. Definately not for everyone, and rightfully called bad by many gamers. However I find it's charm to be worth experiencing. Just avoid combat as much as you can, and it's a half decent exploration game.

many older consoles DO have hidden gems. psx is not one of them.

psx does have a decent library, with many great games. however, the good ones are all well known and all have some sort of cult following.

Wild 9. Was a lot of fun back in the day and appealed to the 90s radical gore demographic. Pretty fun platformer.
Lucky Luke.
Devil Dice.
That's all I can think of that isn't horribly popular or over rated.

I want you to know, I'm taking a huge risk posting these as Metal Jesus™ might get word of this thread and sue the pants off of me. I wan't to make clear that these are not Hidden Gems™ but simply lesser known games that I found enjoyable.

Sorry but I have to. Metal Jesus is a youtuber. He's has ok content, but is very shilly and annoying at times. Most people are butt hurt because they attribute rising game prices to his "hidden gems" videos. I managed to catch one hidden gem video, went on ebay and bought every copy (5 of them) CIB of airblade for like $5-15. Resold them a week later for $30-40 each. The price now is down to pre-Metal Jesus levels, but there's no denying his retro stuff has helped the prices go up simply through making lesser known games more well known. Youtube is an echo chamber, so once he covers someone, all the popular youtubers do too, so the price goes up. This effects sold listings and pricecharting.com and such, so the price stays high.

If you are patient and wait for something that isn't particularly rare to go down in price, it will. Eventually people will realize their copies of some best-selling game from a big name publisher aren't worth $75+ and will drop the price slowly until it sells.

Mole Mania for the Gameboy

Mole Mania is a top down puzzle game. You play as Muddy Mole and you have to go save your wife and children who have been kidnapped by some evil farmer named Jinbe. There are 8 stages which contain 20-40 rooms presented a bit like a zelda dungeon. At the end of each stage is a boss fight.
To clear a room you have to push/throw a big black ball into the door. The gameplay is similar to the Adventures of Lolo for the NES.
The hook is Muddy Mole is able to dig underground. Every room has an above ground and below ground screen, usually both of which you will need to use to clear a room. This makes for some pretty tricky puzzles.

This is one of the best games for the original gameboy. It has a satisfying but challenging difficulty curve but levels 2-7 can be completed out of order if you wish. The music is great and catchy. There is a pretty wide variety of enemies. The boss fights are creative and unique.
Miyamoto was the producer on this game and it shows.

This game went completely under everybody's radar because in Japan it was released only a few months after Pokemon, so it was understandably overlooked. Everywhere else it was released in early 1997, a while after the N64 was released. The original gameboy was pretty much dead by then.
I don't think it got much marketing either.

The only reason I can see anybody disliking this game is if they really don't like puzzle games. The rooms near the end begin to get pretty brutal too.
