Probably going to find the further it goes on, people will end up with weird non-standard resolutions that at least slightly fuck up a fair few HUDs in the very least.

It's probably going to make it a fucking pain for people who stream or do videos, as well as just testing HUDs and stuff for your mod on different resolutions for consistency.

Personally I'm just not fucking updating, I've no reason to be screwing myself out of the option, certainly not to be giving Graf more data.

I honestly feel like Trailblazer might be a little less overpowered. Maybe it's because I only really played Incarnate on one megawad, but once you get the auto-shotgun thing and upgrade it, you basically don't need any other gun because you get so much shotgun ammo and it has great damage and fire rate. The only thing that really hindered me was the health/ammo system it had going on, never quite got use to it.

So, a friend of mine helped me install Doom so that I could play it for the first time, since I hadn’t gotten the chance to play it beforehand. I start the game up, and I pick the “hurt me plenty” difficulty since I assumed it was just the normal difficulty.
Is the game supposed to be as hard as it is, or am I just bad at it? After level 5 the game just gets unforgiving in terms of the amount of enemies that come running at you. Is it one of those games where in order to beat it, you have to play and memorize it over and over until your eyeballs fall out?

Learn how monsters behave, how they react to you, and what they're capable of doing, classic Doom combat is more of a waltz, pausing for just a moment so monsters wind up fireballs and then stepping to the side as they whizz past you.

1) NRFTL is utterly mediocre and unremarkable timesink with close to zero novelty in it, for those who think that sprawls ("""""non-linearity""""", uh-huh) equal good (or rather """""""old-skoool""""""") leveldesign, while in reality they just make the whole thing look a scatterbrained clusterfuck.

It's like those levels (and not only those) were created under very fallacious assumptions:
1) backtracking is unconditionally old-school and thus good
2) levels that are sprawling, laid out in a tree structure, with as many branches as possible, are unconditionally old-school and thus good
3) absolutely unnecessary, superfluous shortcuts you never, ever use, the more the better, are unconditionally old-school and thus good
4) the same concerns windows, """"interconnectivity"""" for the win!
5) oh, and height variation on the floors, the more the better

You know, it reminds me, like, you can play the piano while eliciting something more or less resembling "music" from it. Or you can like spread your fingers as wide as you can and start randomly hitting the keyboard with both of your hand so that at any time 10 or more sounds would play out (more if you press the corresponding pedal). What you get from this style of playing, is not music, it's called cacophony.

That's what I see nu-"""old-skoole""" type of """level-design""" as, a cacophony. There is no sense, there is just a completely misguided and absurdly exaggerated caricature of something I would probably gladly play instead.

All of that, in order to make the level seem as anti-HL (HL being the progenitor of modern cinematic shooters) as possible.

The old video list was removed for several reasons:

1) The list was queried from the display driver. A concept utterly obsolete and in practice a hard-coded list in the display driver. Legacy resolutions like 1024x768, 800x600, which all were incorrect as the hardware doesn't actually support any of those resolutions. Modern display technology only supports one resolution as they aren't CRT displays.

2) Asking the typical user about the full screen resolution is bad UI as the answer in 99.95% of all cases is.. the actual monitor resolution. Why do you think modern newer games just ask you if it should be fullscreen + a scale factor. Apparently not only are we idiots based on the feedback, the entire gaming industry seems to be so!

3) The code was very old, included broken obsolete concepts like the LB modes that no longer made sense (the general scaling system in GZDoom handles this via other settings for a while now). It also conflicted with #2 as it required the user to make a pointless obscure decision for the majority of users.

4) The newer scaling code actually supports selecting specific resolutions. This made the old video selection code redundant. The list of options currently is pretty small, but it is trivialto add more to that list.

5) OpenGL doesn't support exclusive full screen mode changes. What we had was always a hack. Due to #3 it meant any user that selected full screen would get their desktop icons rearranged. That really sucked!

Half the feedback currently seems to come from people that have no idea what scaling features GZDoom actually has, nor puts much consideration into why we are trying to adjust the menu in the first place.

It seems like we could use some way to specify specific windowed geometry sizes, as apparently some used that feature in the old video list. That's more or less the only useful conclusions I've been able to draw from this so far.

I wasnt aware of this and no braindead idiot would ever choose to do that. You select specific resolutions you want to be able to run in it and you rely on the USER to know their own hardware and what it can display. Very few video drivers are incapable of displaying odd resolutions these days, in fullscreen it typically just stretches it or puts a letterbox around a clean multiple.
Im bretty fond of 800x500 windowed with a x2 scaler.

Unless Quakespasm works differently from vanilla Quake, the commands should be going in autoexec.cfg.

Quake works on a three level system when loading files. It loads config, which is defined by the game and is not expected to be changed. It then loads autoexec, which is expected to be modified by the user as additional commands on top of that. Then it executes any .RC files, which is expected to modify things further as included by a mod author.

The only file the player should be modifying is autoexec.cfg.

Played with it through maps 1 through 4 of doom 2, seemed fun enough, but to be quite honest I would rather play Champions/Colorful Hell/maybe both of those mixed with Demon Counterstrike with the right settings and I would probably get a more polished experience than this. Also, get a check on your attitude. The more you act like an entitled shit, the more people will mock you and the less you will actually get people to try out your stuff.

You can also set the game's resolution to your monitor's by simply going full screen or maximizing if you prefer it to be windowed. Which is what modern games like Starcraft 2 do. But slaughtermaps have such gigantic masses of enemies that I don't really know how to read where I should be going, what I should be picking up, or who I should be shooting first, and when I inevitably get murked I'm not sure what I could have done differently because there was so much coming from so many angles. This is what I don't fucking get, if there's a cvar there for setting your resolution, it's childsplay to knock up a menu that's either close enough or exactly the fucking same as the old one.

No people bitching at each other that you must use console commands for a normal part of gaming, no developers telling you to use an external application (seriously what the shit was up with that?) no fuss at all.

It's like pulling the keybind menu and then out of the program, telling people that from now on you bind through the console. Yeah it works but it's adding more hassle to the end user for seemingly no real benefit to them.

Okay, first off, let me tell you that I'm so fucking glad you read changelogs. It is wonderful to have someone that actually knows all of the changes. So thank you very much for that.
But there's also that changelogs are full of all sorts of information, most of which tends to be glossed over, and full of individual changes that are easy to miss among the bundle of other stuff. It really is not something to rely on for the sole announcement of a new ccmd to use in changing such a vital function. It's looking for a blue 4x2 lego you need in a pile of other legos.

It's literally the first result when you google gzdoom 3.5, also the point was that you WOULD be looking for the changelog if you're concerned about the changes. Also it's not that big of a changelog anyhow.
>>4945664
Strongly disagree, from my experience people put minute attention to detail in changelogs. For example in mmorpg updates, not only are various lines often quoted and asked about, but people also read all of it to know if something they wanted was added. It's in their interest to do so.

Plus, the line about the ccmd has the initial word of "Add" which prioritizes the user's attention over other changes that start with things like "fixes".

This is more nitpicking than anything, the main point is that the information was provided, and if you're interested in this information in the first place you SHOULD check the changelog. It's small after all. I know of games with changelogs many times larger than that.

the map had 978 monsters at the start
30 of them were archviles
at least one of them got turned friendly, or perhaps an invulnerability sphere got destroyed
firing the bfg would render the game unplayable for several seconds while it tried to process just how much shit was getting nuked
the amount of archviles, barons, and bfg spam resulted in the air being utterly saturated with vileshards for about 20 minutes
you could look at the monster count on the map and watch both kills and total count constantly increase due to all the infighting

I actually sought out the beta Doom 2 stuff for the unaltered horns specifically to not have the screws bored through them, to have him look kind of like something that could be moving around and be an active threat.
Hence also the grenade, as those are a core problem solver in the mod.
You can carry as many as 30 at a time with a backpack, and when you find containers, you can take grenades one by one, you don't have to worry about wasting that pickup.
You're meant to use them a lot.

I don't actually have any big yellow demon with curved down horns though. Maybe I should do up the Baron?
Of course, if I color him golden/yellow, he'll look less distinct from the Knight, so he would need to be recolored too.

>>4946016
Thing is that it's easier to fit a live grenade in his mouth with the pin and spoon removed, as those protrude/take space/snag. Both of them falling from his face implies it was recently primed, too.

I'm probably making it more complex than necessary, though.

A bunch of things.
Some of the things I noticed when I found it again:
>Some weapons are centered, some are angled, this is kind of bad style from a modern perspective
>The grenade launcher on the M16 is kind of clunky and awkward, but the hand grenades are AWESOME
So basically I just kind modify it and replace the M16 with a carbine, without a launcher, instead having just a quick throw hand grenade. Turns out that's super useful.

And as I go, I keep tinkering some more, doing this or that, kind of enjoying it, learning more about coding, learned how to use photoshop, but also learning some about Immoral Conduct's flaws.
>A bunch of the weapons are really redundant, the twin 1911s are really pointless when you have the Uzi, the Beretta is hard to find and typically very obsolete when you get it, the revolver is an absolute waste of time
>the amount of shotguns is kind of superfluous, with the twin Uzis and either of the pump-action shotguns, I never found myself using the new double barreled shotgun ever
>There's really nothing that takes a good place for the rocket launcher or the BFG
>The grenade launcher is SUPER good, but it lacks the range of a rocket launcher
>The Flak Shotgun is kind of a neat weapon at first, but if you ever find yourself in any kind of big horde situation, it's absolutely useless, with any kind of mild-moderate slaughter, you don't have a prayer (and I've tried a wide variety of strategies to find out what can work and what can't)
Telling the truth, I didn't even originally plan for any kind of big overhaul, that idea kind of just came from someone who was asking if I was gonna release my tweaked version of it, and then I just had a whole lot of gears start spinning in my head.

It kind of just morphed from a small thing into a project. I guess I wanted a more modernized take on it with a more consolidated arsenal, but then there was some feature/scope creep, where I get all these ideas I want to put into work.

Sort of. It was made for Edge, using DDF, and then a super cut down version made in DeHacked was made for ZDoom, way, WAY back in the day before there was any Decorate.

It's got a lot of quasi-realistic things going, some which are really cool.
It was one of the first big gameplay overhaul mods, and one of the first which was really cool and well made, with lots of attention to detail.
As a young teen first playing the proper Edge version (having played the DeHacked one first, and found it cool, but lacking), things like road flares lighting up a room with dynamic red light, tracers from machineguns, dual wielding Uzis, rifles with bayonets, ejecting casings, throwing hand grenades, a grenade launcher with a teargas canister alternate attack, all of this shit, done in Doom, it was mindblowing, so it's always something which had impressed me a lot.

It impressed a lot of other people too, with many citing it as inspiration for their own gameplay mods, and the assets have been used countless times (often cheaply). It's one of those mods with a lot of legacy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKGeGjKgnjM Here's the original, played by some dude.
It was finally ported properly (or, well, to like 95%) to GZDoom, a few years back.

Not levels, modding, but I've been listening to just a bunch of old stuff I dredged up recently, some old Accept, some Metallica, Judas Priest, a bit of Billy Idol, some Guns N' Roses here, some Megadeth there, some Yes, even. Lot of good old stuff, some from bands and artists I already knew, as mentioned here, and then some odd stuff by Literally Who's, nonetheless good.

Also apparently the guitarist Alice Cooper worked with in the late 80's had a solo career (Kane Roberts). That was fun stumbling into on a whim, "Hey, these riffs sound familiar, they're REALLY familiar, who is this guy?", gotta check his stuff out more.
Apparently he played Final Fantasy 7 in the 90's, thought it was awesome, and made a band called Phoenix Down, releasing a single CD full of tribute music.
Pic related, he was known for his huge amounts of muscles, and his various electric guitars styled to look like machineguns, which they would sometimes rig up with pyrotechnics.

Different guy, but I've been aiming for some of that with Counter-Diabolic Commando.
Bright and powerful muzzleflashes, satisfying pows, bangs and kabooms, bright and firey explosions, clips, magazines, casings, shells and grenades bouncing against floors, wounds spraying visceral blood, gibbing that makes a big mess, etc.

This is probably the most general question one could ask here, but what are some levels/WADS (Doom, Quake, Quake II, anything) with some top-tier environment and level design, the kind of shit that just makes walking around taking in the atmosphere and looking at shit fun.

In one of the John Romero Devs Play videos, he said that he was listening to a lot of Queensryche when he was making his levels. Searching his twitter, he listened exclusively to 70s and 80s metal and eventually some Alice in Chains. So if you wanna map as good as Romero did...

What the fuck good is that? Sometimes you want a remotely opened door.

What the hell would you ever put a manual switch right next to a door for? Just make it a normal door in that case.
