Beyond the polygonal graphics it still holds up: Albeit it's not as spooky as Resident Evil, Silent Hill or even Clock Tower, but it does what it needs to do in that department.

played and it bat it earlier this week, sort of in a kick to look at old DOS games of survival horror to see the evolution. A solid game, borrows a lot from classical art, much better written than RE though non-contextual button presses set through menus is archaic (but we have evolved)

Point and Click games usually have a great atmosphere that later horror games tried to recreate through their own puzzle mechanics

It wasn't me but for what it's worth I had a very similar fp mostly composed in the line at the frozen custard place but then it moved faster than I had expected and I couldn't post it. The only other things I worked in were that no WASD is a little disorienting and that a person might want to play the 3DO versions. I actually bought a hybrid USB/PS2 numeric keypad to use with my left hand when I recently played through a legit retail copy of AITD2 on my retro gaming laptop. Getting the music and SFX both to work in DOS mode was half the challenge!

It's really good. Double tapping forward to run is frustrating and unresponsive and the inventory management is tedious, but it's a solid adventure game.

People fail to realize how influential AitD was. It was the first game to come up with the technique of using 3D models in 2D pre rendered backgrounds, think of how many games used to, down to Final Fanstay etc

Exactly my point, it's remember for survival horror, and it should, but everyone forgets that it also influenced the entire industry for more than a decade by coming up with the technique of using 2D pre rendered backgrounds with fixed cameras with 3D models. All kinds of games used that afterwards, action, rpg, adventure, etc

I don't think being the first means it was necessarily influential. While it's easy to see how the gameplay led to other survival horror games, I think the 2D/3D mix is just a conclusion other developers would have naturally come to anyway.

It started a genre because other developers specifically looked at what the game was doing mechanically and decided they wanted to do that. Do you actually think the exact same thing happened with the graphics? You don't think the polygonal models on top of 2D backgrounds wouldn't have happened without AitD? What I'm arguing is just semantics but I don't think I'm exactly spouting some stupid baseless opinion here.

I'd say so yeah, if you're the type of person who can get over poopy old graphics or even likes them(I do). I played it for the first time two years ago and had so much fun I nearly ended up finishing it in one sitting.
It was cool, I felt like a protag in a Lovecraft story, if not as useless.

In Alone in the Dark, the solutions to a few of the puzzles and some of the enemies' weaknesses could only be found in the many books scattered throughout the mansion.

Not to mention the books are the only real way to learn some of the game's lore and story. Kinda like a precursor to the scan logs in Metroid Prime
