Speaking as a fellow 30 year old boomer, true OG gamers probably feel about us chiming in on Atari as we feel about 18 year olds opining about the SNES.

>> No.4939572

A close relative of mine was a head hardware guy for the 7800 project. Lots of interesting stories.

There's probably about 60 cartridges of prototype games and other miscellaneous goodies that I have access to. Would /vr/ be interested in these roms etc?
I'd also be happy to share some fun 80s Atari/GCC tales if you're interested.

It was the right console at the wrong time.
If it was released in the place of the Atari 5200, it would have had a shot. Unfortunately, because Nintendo grabbed third-parties by the balls and prevented them from releasing games on competitor's hardware, and most of the 7800's titles were arcade ports and simpler games, compared to the more fleshed out games in the NES library, the 7800 wasn't strong enough to survive.

It's respectable enough.
Jaguar, on the other hand, was just a total shitshow. Atari had no one to blame but themselves for that one.

The XE should have had its support dropped in NA in 1988, and then those resources meant originally for that driven to the 7800. Also, Atari or Absolute Entertainment really should have tried to muster the courage to go to court with Nintendo as to their selfish policies towards third party game developers.

cool, I'll get around to it soon.

Fun fact - the 7800 had to get an export approval due to the encryption it used to check for legit 7800 games. The initial Atari logo screen when you boot the system up is when it performs the check. The encryption was actually never cracked - thus the lack of unlicensed games. The private key was released in the mid 90s though.
