Are gameboy games to simplistic to enjoy today?

>> No.4938013

No, they have quite a few complex games for them.

>> No.4938014

Absolutely not. I wish more games had their simplicity. Often times I'll try playing more recent games but it ends up having just too much to it, too many cut-scenes, too many options, etc. Options are nice but it gets to a point to where it can be overwhelming.

Some of them are just as complex if not more complex than NES games.
And I don't see people disregarding them because they're too simplistic.
Now, Atari on the other hand...

>> No.4938080

no

>> No.4938103

They're basically NES games but slower, less refined, and smaller with no color. They're fine to play. If anything they're good for when you've got time to kill but not so much time that you could pull out the NES and play a 4 hour game.

Beware of some later titles though, tried to have better graphics at the cost of having really bad screen crunch. People will tell you Mario Land 2 and Metroid 2 are good. Well those people are awful.

The horrible floaty jump ruins the Mario Land games for me. Don't know how those games are so praised.

>> No.4938226

>>4938008
They're fine. Simple mobile games took their place.

What's a good "tap screen to jump" game I should play? The Mario one has Skinner box shit in the way of the game and I just want to open and play instantly for three minutes.

Ever play Frozen Bubble? It's my go-to mobile game. A free remake of Bust-A-Move. First found it on Mandrake Linux in 2003.

Metroid 2 is still an excellent game for the Gameboy and it's amazing to immerse yourself in the atmosphere. Granted, it's got two not /vr/ remakes that seem to be more accessible for newer players but it and the first one hold up quite compared to most games from the /vr/ era. I don't understand why people hate Metroid 2 that much nowadays.

Only the really early platformer style games like Super Mario Land and Castlevania The Adventure, but the sequels to those are pretty good so it's not really a problem with the system itself.

>> No.4938413

Yeah they are pretty simplistic but they are still a million time more interesting what those shitty ass moblie games that gets shat out these days.

Me neither. Metroid 1 haters always go on about "muh map" or "dah difficulty" but GB Metroid 2 haters are always vague. Makes me think they look down on it for its console.

In most cases, this works the other way around

>> No.4938726

Gameboy Advanced and SP and SP 101 variants are great consoles. The games not being complex is more of a meme, its usually just in the small amount of buttons. It has games like advance wars, fire emblem and other strategy and rpg's. The games also usually offer more fun per level or challenge, they really milked every game till the last fun drop to try and maximize enjoyment out of the small size. Mobile games haven't been so good.

>> No.4938778

The puzzle games like Kwirk and Boxxle are pretty complex and take a lot of thinking.

Metroid 2 has the cameras zoomed way in because it was necessary for indicating upgrades without color. And the score gets a bit repetitive. Those are my only complaints.

Golden Sun is very comfy.

If emulating, there's GBA-specific LCD grid shaders that make it look great without ass-pulling any visual information.

>Gameboy Advanced and SP and SP 101 variants are great consoles.

OG GBA has the best form factor, though. GBA SP is so fucking small and the shoulder buttons are so tiny and there are so many hard angles on it that I just can't stand holding it for long. I adore the original GBA, though, and putting a backlit screen it in makes it god-tier.

No, if anything the simplicity of a game allows it to be more timeless. Just look at the early arcade games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, etc., simplistic gameplay but can be easily picked up today.

They were just first and heaviky advertised, nothing comes with simplicity alone.
There's a ton of flash games which aren't remebered.
