ITT: retro games you never finished because it was 2HARD4U

>> No.493214

These games aren't hard, you just need to spend more time with them. Every single faggot on /vr/ calls a game hard when they get a Game Over screen.

>> No.493226

It's a matter of opinion.
I find the first mega man very easy if you know what you're doing but i find comix zone harder because maybe i suck in beat'em ups

>> No.493229

>tfw when the game wasn't hard, there was just something that you couldn't do.

Somehow, I had every single item, about 16 hearts, the best shield, and armour in LTTP, and I just couldn't get past the second to last dungeon because of one of it's puzzles.

It was something to do with timing shots from the fire rod to hit 4 lamps, and I could never do it, I'd run out of magic, and just turn the game off.

I completed it last year though, so I guess, it wasn't that bad.

I also could never complete the original LOZ because I didn't know where to go, and Zelda 2 because it was fucking hard.

>> No.493240

Comix Zone is an easy game. Most people simply don't realize it's not just a beat 'em up, but also a puzzle game that requires you to use certain objects in certain situations to avoid wasting life.

>> No.493262

Fun fact. If a game has unlimited continues, you have no excuse for not beating it.

>> No.493275

I gave up on Tales of Phantasia because of the part where you have to step on the tiles at the same exact time as the other character. I just couldn't get the timing right. It felt weird and arrhythmic and the bitch tries to cheat you by changing direction. I really liked the game up until that point, too.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Not even with save states.

>> No.493301

I seem to remember that game kinda screwing the player at a few parts. Like you'd need more of a certain weapon to beat a level and it didn't give enough of it to you on the level so once you fail the first time at it you are doomed. I remember the sandworm level being like that but I am pretty sure there were more besides.

This. I could only get to the martain football level as a kid, and replaying it I think I quit at the level with the sea monsters. Dr. Tongue looks brutal too, fuck that.

>> No.493307

A bunch of games come to mind when I was little

Whomp'Em, a Mega Man clone, had 6 easier levels then a final level and boss. The final level was 3x longer and harder than any of the other levels and I could never beat it. The boss is only affected by a weapon that takes your health away and by the time I got there I'd be almost dead

The Immortal for Genesis, 2creepy4me, had multiple traps and puzzles that were hard to understand as a kid. I cried the first time a goblin hacked me in half. Never got very far.

Duck Hunt, didn't have the light gun soooo... yeahhh...

Splatterhouse 3, the music scared the shit out of me. Teddy bear boss on the 3rd floor always raped me cause I was playing while horrified. The few times I got past that, the mask kicked my ass all around. The whole game is on a timer so that never helped either.

>> No.493312

Plenty of shmups.

>> No.493316

>>493204

It's been a while, but doesn't that have a timed boss battle? It wrecked my shit, I had to walk away in shame.

>> No.493318

super ghouls n' ghosts, but i've vowed to try and beat it this year.

>> No.493320

>>493307
Splatterhouse 3 is the easiest Splatterhouse, you only have to abuse the spin kick and everything become a joke.

Now, The Immortal is bullshit.

This game is literally the one I never beat as a kid.

I could beat this game with everyone but that Psylocke bitch. That level where you had to beat up a rocket as it was taking off was just a pain.

>> No.493347

>>493307
Sonic the Hedgehog, Aquatic Labyrinth Zone, I could never beat this either, I would always get lost and drown, oh god that drowning music. Scared the fucking shit out of me. Heart attack level.

>>493275
What the hell dude. You probably played ToP on a emulator, since there is no english version of the game, how could you fail?

>> No.493357

>>493301
This is pretty true. I haven't played it since the days of having friends sleep over, because it was the game we played when friends slept over all night long, but I remember writing down some passwords and then making notes not to use those passwords because, if you did, you'd wind up basically being overwhelmed without weapons. You had to use an earlier password and stock up for those harder levels.

I also remember a creatures from the black lagoon stage where, if you didn't bee-line for the victims, you'd instant game over because they'd get slaughtered so quickly, but maybe we were letting too many victims die in previous stages.

>> No.493374

I never tried too hard, but Altered Beast.

>> No.493378

>>493280
I beat it as a kid, but only because my brother and I spent an insane chunk of our pre-teen/teen years playing it again and again.

I'm shit at beat em ups.

>> No.493390

Yeah the problem was I didn't know how to spin kick. I do love that game though, nothing was quite as scary as Splatterhouse back then, except for maybe Clock Tower on the SNES.

Shit nigga, I just beat this the other day. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking, you have to destroy it in like ten seconds or else you run out of platforms?

Most of the genesis games already mentioned in this thread I either had or borrowed and finished as a kid.
I didn't even view them as particularly hard games, just something you stuck with until you beat.
Now pic related, that's some true Machiavellian bullshit right here. And not in the "game's got shit design so it's unplayable kind", it genuinely kicks your ass and makes you feel like its your own goddamn' fault.

>> No.493753

>>493214
There are legitimately difficult games out there, though.

Yeah, I definitely disagree with those people making "babby's first LoZ playthrough" threads and acting like it's some kind of unplayable cryptic bullshit, but if someone's going to say that Ninja Gaiden or Ghouls 'n' Ghosts of Castlevania III are hard, that's completely fucking fair.

A lot of old games were punishingly difficult, even if they are beatable with enough skill/effort.

Aww, I remember beating Chakan as a kid. Shit took me days to figure out. Beating the Lost Vikings on Genesis single-player was probably the only more satisfying beat I had on that system.

Game I never did beat due to being 3hard5me, though? Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

Use the switch to blow him to bits.

It is possible to just smash his face in the old fashioned way but he has an annoying habit of teleporting away when he's outmatched. You can still beat him under the time limit that way though.

Also, the rat can uncover hidden items and you can trigger switches by throwing a knife at it.

>No one mentions Phantasy Star
The first one was my first RPG, so I ended up fucking quitting when I was a wee kid at the first part because the first wild monster battle kicked my ass. Not having an FM chip probably didn't help things, hooray for JP translations.

He may have been playing on the GBA version of the game, I had some problems with it too.

For the most part, I don't fail to finish games because they are too hard, it's usually because I can't remember what I was doing, this really hits hard on old RPGs that I don't feel like restarting, particularly phantasy star 2.

Ristar is one of the exceptions, the last world frustrates me to no end.
