A lot of collectors tend to buy shit that they'll never play (e.g. shovelware and licensed crap) rather than the essentials for a console

They don't actually play the games they buy. My friend is like that, barely plays games anymore but still enjoys buying vidya shit on ebay auctions.

"collecting" is a very broad term.

I collect the essentials, games that have an interesting history behind it, a few meme games, underrated stuff, cool looking stuff.

I'm assuming most people that shit on it are poor niggers that also think "collecting" means "completing every single library of every single console".

People get mad because collector demand makes games too expensive for them to buy.

I don't like collecting because too much of it I perceive to be an effort of showing off to others that you have things, rather than any attempt at actually obtaining and enjoying something.

I used to be that way, I had stacks of games I had never touched, that I bought en masse because they were in recommended lists online. I wasn't really playing games, just completing checklists. Once I stopped doing that, I ended up enjoying games a lot more.

Also, collectors in the US are dangerous, because it's so easy and so cheap to get massive amounts of storage space for collections here, and because online bidding allows them to peruse a large selection even if they live in the middle of nowhere. That means that they can easily afford to fill a space with huge amounts of games, and they effectively take those games off of the market because they will likely never let go of them, just let them pile up. As a result, the playable copies count goes down, and the cost goes up. I think that the Japanese market is better off due to its small houses and obsessive condition checking. You end up with more higher quality items in the used market, and you end up with way more fluidity of used product because people aren't just able to hoard hundreds of cartridges in a spare room, they have to play it or move it on to get the next thing. That sort of market is better for gaming, the market here in the US is more like hoarding.

I'd like to get out of the suburbs eventually. My time in old world cities, or even at the bf's in upttown Minneapolis, was a dream. Dad got scared when I rented a place in the city and bought me a condo. I couldn't say no because living alone was more appealing than somewhere with tape on the circuit breakers, and I was more of a shut-in gamer then. It's the worst of both worlds, and actually much nosier than the densest parts of the city, at least at low frequencies that don't stay outside because there's much less to absorb them. It's not just being drowned out by city noise. I've looked on a spectrograph. The price of any finite resource that goes unreplenished rises as the supply inevitably decreases. Collectors are not causing anything that woudn't happen anyways with time. If anything collector mentality keeps prices down for longer, because if the games were in a state of constant buy/sell flux and each seller was looking to make a small margin on the transaction the prices would rise higher, quicker.

But if the item has been relisted after being up for some weeks/months, then why not at least try to make an offer on it? Just doesn't make sense to me.
