Landstalker's controls are fine if you can adapt to being forced to use diagonals or use the patch that fixes the controls because diagonals SUCK even on the mega drive pad

The real issue is the lack of a spot shadow, which means the perspective sucks while platforming.

Constantly using diagonals makes me feel like I'm abusing the hardware of my joystick to the point of shortening its durability

Are you physically retarded? Landstalker's controls are fine.

There's a reason why nearly every other isometric game ever made doesn't use their controls scheme.

This. I never heard bitching this concentrated about it till this board.

Overall I think it represents a trend. People don't like learning new things, and old games with unusual tend to get ignored because of it. Back when these games were new it was more common to have to wrestle with the idiosyncrasies of each weird control scheme. But now most people want to play something that feels familiar and having to deal with something like Landstalker or Budokai is seen as a chore more than a fun challenge.

I think they're absolute perfection, but it's one of my favorite games.

No challenge in seeing my joystick and my thumbs tendons and muscles getting fucking destroyed by only pressing diagonals all the time

I feel bad about your thumbs, but liked Landstalker a lot and never had that problem so I can't sympathize a ton. Now playing King of Fighters on a Sony pad... THAT'S pain.
