IV suffers like all early 3D games from low polygon counts. Especially those ugly dragons in the first stage. They look pitiful compared to the fire dragons from Gradius II.

What is your favorite shmup story lads? Obviously they tend to be pretty thin but a good framing device goes a long way. I've always found Ketsui's really effective because it's so simple but makes the whole game feel so desperate - take down EVAC at all costs, and even if you succeed you won't live.

I haven't beat any shmups with good stories, but I've got pretty far in Einhander and it has an awesome setting and premise.

I have a kind of similar issue with Thunder Force V. I play on Saturn which looks a bit better than the PS version, but still I wish it was blissful 2D like the older TF games instead of 3D.

Anyway, the best shmup is the Saturn mode of Radiant Silvergun. You all know why.

i like radiant silvergun it is a hybrid of a puzzle game,shoot em up and rpg. it also has anime cut scenes

Actually, scratch that. Einhänder IS the GOAT. It even has a German name, so that makes it OBJECTIVELY better than even Ikaruga. Nevermind the fact that it's by the best dev ever, for shoot 'em ups or any other genre: SquareSoft.
