How do I get the command line arguments to work? I'm trying to get them to work on Chocolate Doom but they just wont work for me. The difference is its just fancy lighting effects placed onto textures without altering the content or textures themselves. Effects that the mapping wasn't made to take advantage of at that. It's nothing compared to that "lowpoly pack" the russian guy kept pushing everywhere, where there were HD textures and garbage 3D models placed onto everything, said models often not even working as intended, while swiping other people's PBR work and throwing it ontop.

And I can say that at least some people are looking towards general PBR completion for vanilla assets.

Anyone know a good custom HUD that works with Metadoom 4.1? I don't care about the inventory items and I don't use them so it not showing items doesn't bother me one bit. That's basically what the Homely difficulty is for. You'll take only 30% of the normal damage from attacks and you won't bleed from injuries or suffer aggravated damage, so you don't need medikits at all actually.

In first Marathon I liked G4 Sunbathing (the vacuum survival horrorish level), Pfhor Your Eyes Only (the first alien level) as well as a couple of music tracks.

That concludes the list of things I liked in the first Marathon.

The second Marathon had, uh, I guess it had some nice sound ambiance, the gun sounds didn't make me want to turn the sound off this time around, I liked the spin on the Pfhor Your Eyes Only from the previous game, and, well, I did like the ending (both the final fight and the overall story resolution).

I didn't have enough of it in me to continue with Infinity. Fuck THAT noise.

Funny thing is, it's very difficult to make a vanilla Doom to feel like a dungeoncrawler due to, well, there isn't much treasure to hunt for, therefore, there is much lesser incentive to "crawl". What I mean is that the majority of bonuses are timed and are to be used immediately and on the spot. That leaves, as potential treasure - what? - a backpack, a berserk, a full map (which defied the whole purpose of dungeoncrawling to begin with), maybe a megahealth or a nice armor - and weapons (and that's only if you are pistolstarting, if you are not, weapons cease to be treasures by and large). You can't even seriously work with the ammo or health due to Doom being a very random game in terms of both yours and enemies' damage output, and, thus, the necessity to have, like a hefty overhead for both ammo and health pickups just in case. So, what I am going for is that the very nature of rewards in Doom coerces the leveldesigners to make more streamlined levels, since going all sprawly does more or often than not get quite a bit old quite a bit fast.

And, for Quake, well, it allows for a much finer ammo/health balance, but there are even less permanent bonuses. Even the health rots when over 100. So, for Quake the situation is hardly any better if better at all.

Enter Sandy Petersen.

You know, what was his answer to that conundrum (I wanna make something dungeoncrawly, but I have almost no rewards to work with)? Novelty. Surprise. Something you didn't even happen to suspect being a thing before, well, seeing it with you very eyes. That's his proposed reward by the usage of which he tries to put the "crawling" back into Doom. In other words, what allows him to turn Doom levels into these mini-dungeoncrawly campaigns is your desire to be taught, to be shown some weird unusual outrageous leveldesigning tricks and gimmicks, in other words, your desire to learn.

• Mines now detach automatically after their little light blinks 20 times. I'll probably adjust this.
• Mines no longer attach to walls with a special applied, so they'll bounce off doors etc. to avoid problems that come with moving surfaces.
• If they somehow do get attached to a moving surface (like a wall triggered by a switch elsewhere, or the inside wall of a platform) they'll detach if they touch the floor (which they usually do if they get in that circumstance and bug out). Still need to figure out a good way to have them detach if they touch the ceiling, so as to handle crushers, elevators etc.
• Detached mines can be picked back up and re-used. Waste not want not, right?

It's not a shooter, and it's not even retro (well, it depends on how you look at it, but not from release dates standpoind), but to any leveldesign aficionados, I really, REALLY advise you to play at the very least the first RHEM game.

It's a Myst clone, more specifically Riven clone. It doesn't really do anything Riven haven't done somewhere, gameplay-wise. So, it's not like Obduction which went out of its way trying to add something to the gameplay formula established by Riven with different gimmicks to it. It's really and truly just a game that uses a subset of Riven's gamedesign language.

HOWEVER. It cranks it to the FUCKING ELEVEN. It's really and truly the Insane German Genius edition of Riven. You know, when I said RHEM is a Myst clone, some of you probably thought about puzzles, especially if you haven't played Riven. Thing is, Riven had, overall, 2.5 puzzles. Two and a half. And it's still widely considered the hardest game in its series. Everything other than those puzzles was wandering around the islands, that formed a sort of a labyrinth, and discovering what's connected to what.

Now, first RHEM has 5 puzzles to it. However, it takes this "that formed a sort of a labyrinth" and goes apeshit with it. It's like

you know what, I'll just call it Devil's Rubik's Cube and be done with it. It's a clear contender for probably the most convoluted - while still fair and solvable - shit I have ever encountered in computer games. It's simply insane. I recommend doing it without any hints, taking ample notes, memorizing everything and over the course of several consecutive days dedicated solely to this game. It requires concentration, paying attention and memorizing basically everything about the ingame world. There is no moon logic, no cat's hair puzzles, there are walkways, wires and pipes which form barely comprehensible knots, and there are rusty doors, buttons, code locks and code tables aplenty.

Something a bit odd I've discovered, but running Batman Doom in Crispy Doom will load No Rest for the Living if you have Nerve.WAD in your Crispy Doom folder, even if you're using an original Doom 2 WAD and completely remove the BFG Edition WAD. It displays them as two separate episodes, which Crispy Doom doesn't seem to to do when you load an original Doom 2 WAD by itself, the only thing that's off is that it uses "Knee Deep in the Dead" and "The Shores of Hell" as names rather than "Hell on Earth" and "No Rest for the Living" since the original WAD doesn't have the proper episode names.

To add onto this: There's now a console command, "vid_setsize x y", to set a specific resolution/window size for windowed mode. Currently your windowed resolution is basically reset the first time you run the new version, but as a result of this command it should be easy to reset.

Cooke's sky-is-falling suggestion to use a third-party tool to set your window size was because vid_setsize had yet to be reimplemented and, uh, there was a bug where the window size wasn't saved when you quit. Which... didn't help matters.

Hopefully a nicer UI-based method of windowed res selection (preferably with better code behind it than the old one) gets added before a release, but if it doesn't then there's other, pretty simply ways.

Just know that if you manually resize your window by click-and-dragging, you're terrible and I hate you.

It was made for Doom 3 and the 3D perspective lets the models get closer to your view without the hands coming off as impractically small or anything. Okay bear with me here

I call it the Soul Reap Cannon

It fires like the Q3A lightning gun for its primary fire and deals light damage but you can keep the trigger held and sweep with it.

When you kill any enemy with this gun however you will essentially capture it's soul and it will be stored in the weapon.

The alt fire will then fire off the soul of the demon in an orb with color and strength depending on demon. On the orb will be the demon's screaming face as its last moments of existence are its disembodied spirit hurtling towards his fellow demons. An imp soul would be a red orb housing a wide eyed screaming imp head facing you so you can enjoy the terror in his eyes before blowing up into a fireball.
A cyberdemons would be similar but gold and silver and blowup like a nuke. And so on so forth.

You can use alt fire with a direction key a la the Rasputin to switch which demon soul is loaded of course only if you have collected that demon's soul.

So I thought Holy Hell is an arena-by-arena meat factory worker simulator with plenty of ammo in which you shoot everything until your mouse button breaks.

Then I changed the difficulty, and the very first wave of soldiers fed me with too many bullets. One of the most noticeable gameplay changes I can remember.

Jedi Engine is not based on Doom. All the formats involved are quite different and there's a complex "two renderers, one overlaid over the other" system for handling the few polygonial objects in DF.

I never liked the idea that they people called them aliens like they would be grays, they don't fit that aesthetic at all.

They're more like a conventional humanoid but taller, and they have a demonic appearance to them, just not the conventional horns and hooves of say, a Baron.
They have some muscles to them, but they're also strangely emaciated and bony, even displaying bare ribs. Their heads are large, but I'm not sure that's to directly ape the generic Ayy, just to suggest he has a large brain in there, as he's scheming, vile demon that can cast spells and resurrect the dead, he's smart, at least in some ways.

Also, a lot of the original detail is lost in the transition, his head doesn't appear nearly as bulbous as his model, and his face looks more skeletal in the game than anything. The bas-reliefs you can find sort of look a bit more alien-ish, but still have kind of a skull motif going on.

Some other monsters also changed being turned into sprites; the Revenant was originally much more meaty and bloody, but he was changed pretty dramatically to how he looks now, and the Mancubus had stripes like some sort of obese, shaved tiger, which are absent in his sprites. Then you have the Spider Mastermind, where he had a tiny gun and it was part of his body, but they altered his graphics and put a big gun on his platform.

The difference lay in the BFG and its strategic value for delivering hurt in a specific situation once per level. Or if you get-gud like me you dont even use it and by the time witch house or necropolis comes up you have 4 or 5 shots of it racked up.

I dont know how you guys did the shambler lightning, I know its an archvile style attack and I guess it werks in dehacked (but without the extra 70 damage tacked on?). That should really be handled as some form of railgun because its unable to hit bystanders, and one trick to dusting shamblers in quake is to get something else hit by the lightning.

Someone needs to do one of those 3d renders of a Scrag for the equivalent monster so that its a 1:1 port. And I would have rather it shot Baron Fireballs instead of Imp Fireballs just to make them a solid challenge. Scrag projectiles were green yknow.

Someone needs to make a non-dehacked version for GZdoom, and save all the graphics inside it as PNG format so they can be set independent of the palette.

The reason for a large arsenal in those days is because while the video game is a toy, the weapons in the game themselves are also toys to play with and it makes the game much more exciting to have that much playability to it.

Some games like Hexen eschew that because the focus is supposed to be somewhere else. Also that game relied on items doing some of the work. Ive never played Deus Ex but from what I saw in a screenshot it only has maybe 6 weapons and thats been a turnoff to even picking it up.

Depending on how corny/unrealistic the game is designed to be (serious sam, turok) you can have a huge amount of weapons and they dont need to even look like they function properly. Because a vidya is still technically a toy, though some games are much more simulator-like (xcom, some survival horror games).

One thing I forgot to mention is DOTB seems to be built with either jumping or no jumping to be supported equally. Which is good because a mapset like that I am definitely turning on Jumping. Im happy that this doesnt break the flow of gameplay but at the same time there's no place where turning off jumping will prevent you from progressing.

I'm probably not the best to answer because I dislike turning hitscans into projectiles. But 2 seems like the best balance between readability and unobtrusive. 1 is most readable by far, but it feels kinda like Metal Slug in a way that feels particularly out of touch with Doom to me. 3 is unreadable and still very silly because you can still see this slow ass bullet flying. I think if bullets are going to be visible projectiles, they should have some amount of stylization to them without being incongruous, and 2 is the closest - you can still see trails, but they're not straight up arcade bullets.

I just set the guns to auto-upgrade, so once you get the better slot gun, it replaces your old one. You can turn some of them off too if you don't like them; I'm not really a fan of the auto shotgun so I leave it off and just stick with SSG + Pump shotgun.
