Anyone here use retropi? Is it worth it?

Not really, youre better off buying a nice laptop and a good controller and if you want to play on your tv, just use an hdmi cable. No reason to mess around with the memeberry unless you like to tinker.

I use it but honestly it's too much of a hassle to play the handful of games I care to actually play through. I think it's cool to have, but just be prepared to lose interest in it within a few weeks.

Only if you enjoy lag and innacurate emulation. Just buy an hdmi cable for your current laptop or pc. Retropi is neat but it legitimatly sucks to play on.

It works, it doesn’t lag but it’s not worth it IMO. You’re stuck playing SOME ps1 and n64 barely, and everything else before that is fine. You’d be better off getting a Wii, but then again the Wii has a little trouble playing GBA at times, but you get Component video. It’s a toss up, but I’d say no on the Pi. As others said, you’d be better off just using a laptop or attaching your desktop to your TV.

But if you wanna delve into it, they’re at least fun to tinker with.

I bought one because my friend has a big screen TV and a SNES Classic, and I wanted something similar to bring over people's houses that wasn't limited to SNES games. Being cheaper and more powerful than the SNES Classic I'd say it's worth it.

The main reason I keep it around is the portability. You can slip it in your pocket and bring it over someone's house. otherwise I rarely use it.

It runs NES and SNES games perfectly. It runs most PS1 games OK too. Tony Hawk is laggy and unplayable, Spyro works flawlessly, most JRPGs and racing games work just fine.

This too though, this is the main advantage of a Pi is that it’s very portable and supports PS Bluetooth controllers, so you can just plug in video/power and sit down and play. It’s convenient, so if you’re happy with mostly ok emulation for everything GBA and below (minus most of N64), and ability to play a big chunk of PS1, it’s worth the price.

not to mention mine cost 55 bucks for everything. my controller cost more than my pi

>> No.4925757

I never felt my laptop in a case with 2 or 3 controllers shoved in the outside pocket was too much to take with me.

I suppose I might feel differently if I didn't have a car, though.

I can see the cost being a nice selling point, but i got a gpd win. Thats portable in more ways than one. It can also double as a low grade pc to write papers and such on. It may cost a bit more, but damn is it fucking flexable. Im talking halo on pc flexible in your hand or on a tv, im talking near perfect emulation up to and including some 5th gen consoles, im talking about fucking morrowind and fallout new vegas in bed, im talkin about deus ex in your hand, mother fuckers im talkn bout direct x and x input. Whatch yall know bout switchin lanes on dat wood grain?

I agree with you, I would kill for a GPD win. They’re just so damn expensive.

That's fine, I mostly play NES/SNES/Genisis. N64 was fucking trash, and I was planning on just buying a PS1 since they're cheap enough and the good titles aren't hard to come by.
So as long as it works well for NES, SNES, Genisis and maybe TG16, I won't have any problem.

Then use your fucking phone that you post to 4chan with. It should do hdmi out and you can use a bluetooth controller. Still better emulation than an rpi.

Some people want to play on a TV and not a monitor like an autist, and if it’s not a laptop, it’s even more of a pain to bring your PC out to the living room and attach it to the TV just to emulate some games for a bit.

>> No.4925897

I'm pretty sure the Raspberry Pi can't even run most PS1 and N64 games. You would be better off just buying a used Wii and homebrewing it. You can even install the WAD files for the N64 games that were released on virtual console since those run perfectly.

The analog output is beyond shit and if I were going to play on a modern display I'd just build a HTPC.

Get a Nvidia Shield, powerful enough to run retroarch CRT shaders, PS1, N64, even Dolphin and is more TV friendly than a HTPC.

Literally loading games onto my Pie right now for the first time.

I fucking hate playing retro on a laptop. It just doesn't feel right, because for one, I never played video games on a computer. Always though computer games were fucking boring.

Running my pie with a 3.5mm Zune Av cable to my toshiba. Pretty fucking great.

>> No.4926584

>>4926551
Same. The laptop just doesn't feel right, and when I play 2p nobody's going to want to wait for me to hook the laptop up to the tvlike a fucking autist. I'd rather have the pi hooked up and ready to go.

>> No.4926619

>>4925549
Pi is shit. Most single board computers are shit. If you have to use one I say use Lakka\RecalBox on an oDroid XU4 its good enough to run some PSP, some Dreamcast and most N64. Worth mentioning the XU4 lacks Bluetooth and Wifi so it can be a pain sometimes but its worth it if you really want retro on your TV without just using the hardware.

Heres a videos of it playing games from youtube:
