Seriously though, 2. Of the retro ones. 2 was godly. One of the finer rentals in my PS days.

Rogue Trip was awesome too.

My liking of this series took a hit when I realized that the AI doesn't exist on it's own. Enemy cars only do anything when the player is nearby, they don't attack each other, don't intentionally pick up items and don't attempt to escape when they are getting BTFO. The only exceptions are TM3 and 4, which happen to be the worst games of the series. It really DOES make a difference when the AI actively tries to evade and search for health when it's in bad shape. The gameplay dynamics change entirely.

Remember in Twisted Metal Black, how if you play as Shadow (Raven), and have her special selected, and you press up three times, she pops up from the top of the car with a machinegun, shooting at enemies like with Outlaw's special?

Did you know that if you did that while holding down L1, L2, R1 and R2, she will do that topless, showing her titties?
For some reason, it's really hard to find references to this online, but it absolutely works.

From a my own gameplay perspective:

Twisted Metal 1
>okay levels
>decent selection of cars
>healing system sucks (platforms)
>imbalanced specials(Thumper)
>okay physics
>overall primitive

Twisted Metal 2
>great physics, good for ramming
>good levels (except Suicide Slide)
>better healing system
>good, new weapons
>good selection of cars

Twisted Metal 3
>awful physics, cars flip easily and ramming does nothing
>cars are hit and miss
>cool and creative levels that added more height and level based hazards (Egypt besto)
>more good weapons, many improved

Twisted Metal 4
>tons of new cars with good specials, esp boss unlocks
>great levels, including more abstract multiplayer ones (Oil Rig besto)
>good bosses
>physics is only a bit better than 3
>some mediocre weapons

I'm kind of biased toward TM4 since I've played it the most, but I really find it the best from a gameplay perspective. I will say that the story and characters are pretty dumb in 4, but being able to play as Calypso and launch nukes from a truck more than makes up for it. Moon Buggy is also a beast with his electric wire special. Overall my ranking is 4>2>3>1.

They had Rob Zombie?
That's pretty neat, even if just a gimmick.

I only ever played Black, but always was kind of interested in all the old ones. Should I just play through them all chronolically?

They're not as good as the series progresses? I remember Black was very fun, especially in multiplayer (and I don't even particularly like multiplayer), is the multiplayer similar on these older ones?

The most humorous thing about the first game is the bugged-to-hell collision physics. I mean, I get it; it's their first game, but it's still funny how quickly you can destroy another car by touching it to death.

Good question.
This was unknown for a long time, and it only showed up online a few years after release, probably leaked by one of the devs who put it in there.

It's difficult to find any mention of it online, and no cheat site I found had it listed, chances are good it's still in the PS3 and PS4 ports, PAL or US, just because nobody knew it was there to take out.

It's kind of cool in that way. Especially since she's jailbait; a transgressive easteregg like this would be hard to sneak into a game these days, and it would be a big controversy once found out.

Hot Coffee made a big fuss, but the characters involved were of age. It's a wonder this slipped by the radar.

I played Black at the wrong time of my life. It was the first time that I made an external mention that my dad was beating me and I almost got taken away to foster parents. I remember my mom telling me that there was a possibility that I was going to get sent to a hospital over it, and then I played this game and that was what I thought my life was going to be soon.

So glad I finally put the fear of God in them (my dad more directly) earlier this year once I finally had the balls to call the cops after beating me one too many times and moved out of that shit.
