Saturn is a really bad system to have if you're a JRPG fan. Its library of JRPGs is mediocre and the games often have a very ugly digitized sprite look, in addition to being generally sluggish. This isn't to say that there are none, it isn't the N64, but it is not a system to bother with many RPGs on.

What you want are arcade ports. Shoot em Ups, Super Scaler games, the like.

Just get an Action Replay and flash Pseudo Saturn Kai on it, and you'll be gucci. You'll be able to run games of all regions and formats (legit or burned) if you do that, and it doubles as a RAM cart.

Or you could Rhea/Phoebe it and just run games off SD cards.

not difficult at all, you can get an action replay for it for a few bucks. pick up one with a game included (doesn't matter what), flash pseudosaturn to the action replay, and then you can run burned discs and region free stuff. it's worth going through ebay because finding them in the wild is inexplicably very difficult.

So do i. But i ended up getting a standard US black so i didn't have to mess with voltage differences. But more importantly its difficult (especially buying online) to find a white one that isnt discolored. Any sort of yellowing would bug the shit out of me, that and i realized i dont have a black console at all. Just got my action replay as well.
>is it worth it to go through ebay?
I buy shitloads through ebay. Just make sure the seller has a high rating. Ebay has a really good buyer return policy, read into it. Just picked up my model 1 saturn in really good shape.

action replay has a backup fuction, you just can't use it in game but in the system menu you just back it all up there. Unless you are playing on a drained battery (which you can get those self charging ones that last a few years if you don't want to pay the 5.00ish a year to replace the old battery) you will keep all your saves. Least that's how I have been doing it for 5 years now.

If you flash it to run backups, it won't be able to save anything. And there are some games with saves so big they don't fit on the internal memory. Plus it's a fucking chore to copy those things over every game - it's way simpler to keep a backup cart in permanently and never worry about saves in any game ever.

>> No.4933161

>>4925990
Saturn doesn't really have much more RAM.
in fact, the one place it really shines is video RAM, which is sadly split on the Saturn (three 512kB chunks -- 512k for sprites/textures, 512k for backgrounds, and then 512k for the main framebuffer) rather than the 1MB unified block like on the Playstation (loaded textures and the framebuffer and the lot are just jammed in the same area, letting you do some wild framebuffer fuckery with extremely little penalty)

both machines have 2MB of main work RAM, and then there's a handful of other caches and shit on each machine
Saturn has better load times due to the more advanced loading process driven by a whole dedicated SH-1 CPU (which is sadly non-programmable for devs, it only executes the CD drive program).

>> No.4933174

>>4933161
Saturn has better load times because it has 512k cd memory, psx only has 128k. The cd memory can also be used to store data in general, so the Saturn definitely has an edge there.

Also the extra 512k video ram is hooked up to tilemap processor, so it can do way more advanced backdrops than what the PSX could do if it had 512k more ram for textures.

The texture memory definitely sucks, but the whole VDP1 in general was shit, not just its memory setup.
