It still had at least a dozen pretty good ones.

When it comes to story driven turn based JRPG's, well it's one of the weakest libraries in the the Genesis/ Mega Drive. Sure it's not totally barren of RPG's and there are a few good ones on the Sega CD as well.

But generally, the Genesis/ Mega Drive library is much more focused on action RPG's. The system has a pretty varied library of RPG sub genres, but there are still quite a large number of multi-platform ports. Not the biggest RPG library from the 16bit consoles.

It wasn't that weird. Sega made the majority of their profits in the arcades back then. The arcade was always their central focus, so they aimed their home consoles in this direction too.

Back then, Nintendo had a legitimate monopoly on third party console developers. It made the home console market hard to get into back then. But Sega still had a lot of good teams dedicated to making console exclusives.

90% of Shining in the Darkness takes place in dungeons. Dungeon crawlers were pretty big in Japan back then, and I'm pretty sure that was the goal of Shining in the Darkness. Even the title of the game implies that it's a dungeon crawler.

I agree that a lot of JRPG's have first person moments in them. The original Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System has first person dungeons, but it is not a dungeon crawler.

Most of the Sega/ Mega CD RPG's were left behind in Japan. If it wasn't for groups like Working Designs, The Sega CD would have been almost barren of RPG's in the west. Working Designs were going to localize more Sega CD games for the west, but the system just wan;t popular enough and was quickly overshadowed by the 32bit machines, which WD switched focus to.

There were also quite a large number of Dungeon Crawler-like RPG's for the add-on left behind in Japan.

Out of the JRPGs released in english at that time, Phantasy Star IV and Lunar II are both top 5 material.

The console that wins Japan wins JRPGS. Sega was dead last, since the NES came out before it and scooped up plenty of developers, the PC Engine enticed developers by being somewhat similar architecturally to the NES, and the SNES continued in the legacy of the NES.

Sorcerer's Kingdom is one of the overlooked Genesis RPGs and one of my favorites on the system. It's a turn-based strategy RPG where you control a group of adventurers and go on little quests to increase your rank within the kingdom. A story develops over time, but for most of the game, the quests are discrete adventures that don't have much to do with each other; you're just ridding the land of evil and exploring.

It's a lot of fun, there's a real sense of adventure to it and more people need to check it out.
