Shining thread in honor of Hiroshi Kajiyama.

You might know him as the artist from Shining Force II, III, Final Conflict, Wisdom, Gaiden/CD, and Golden Sun.

I've been a fan of TBS games and I enjoyed stuff like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars and I've never tried Shining Force. I hear it's similar to the above but what's the best one to start with and how do they play?

I tried Langrisser twice on the Mega Drive, but found the gameplay to be slow. Is SF similar in that regard?

SF isn't like Langrisser in that you have lots of troops to move (note: if you're playing Langrisser put your troops AI on 'defend' so they follow their leader without needing to be moved) however it's still extremely slow because each unit gets their turn individually, the game's cursor moves slowly across the map, and you can't turn battle animations off.

I saw there's a GBA version which has improved sprites and such, is that a better version to start with?

I feel like SF2 is a good entry level game for the series.
A cute and diverse character roster, easy, but not baby tier difficulty, a colorful map with some seriously cool locations, and just fun all around.

Thanks God, another SF thread to keep autistically bumping for the next 3 months.

Not really, if you're going to try the series you might as well play the mega drive version of SF1. Just stay away from SF2; it's a disappointment in every way.

Id say its battle at the way to Bedoe, battle with Kraken, battle at harpy pond and battle with Prism Flowers.

... Sometimes I wish there were more enemies at each map after New Granseal.

Langrisser is just the battles. It has ramped up difficulty that stems from goofy sub-troop mechanics and attrition.

The overworld exploration, rpg elements, story line, and class advancements all work better in SF games. It's like they cut out what didn't quite work for Langrisser, aimed the game for kids, and wrapped and rpg around it.

No. Personally I don't find Wisdom to be a good game at all. The Force games and the two dungeon crawlers are good, though

That art looks great. Like a nice blend netween old-ish character designs but with modern senaibilities. Looks real good.

You might remember from the last Shining thread I posted my impressions of Shining the Holy Ark as I played through the game. Well I finished it last week and here's my full opinions:

>What it did right
Semi-cinematic cutscenes were well done imho. You could see the character models looking at each other while talking, and when they talked to you they all looked at the camera, including your party members who temporarily separate from the first-person blob. I wish modern dungeon crawlers did this too instead of the lazy VN-style talkig heads we get so often. I also liked the very detailed map, and the fact that the entire game took place in a small-ish location instead of a world map. Allowed the devs to insert more detail imho, and none of the locations/dungeons felt like filler.

I liked the dungeons. The mansion in the forest is especially memorable with its horror-like feeling. I like the inclusion of curved corridors; adds variety. And gold star to whoever made the topsy turvy puzzle & the weighing jewelry puzzle in the South Shrine. Imho that was the best puzzle in the game. Also liked the fact that the town is an actual explorable location instead of just a menu. More dungeon crawling RPGs need that.

>What I disliked
The hidden item system is a bit uninteresting. I don't mind for there to be hidden stuff in puddles, picture frames, etc. but I greatly disliked that featureless walls at dead ends can also have stuff. Very little indication of anything being there other than 'hey, dead end!'. Combat I felt was a bit too simple, but that's true for a lot of Shining games so not a major cons. One thing I reallly wanted was faster battle animations especially for spells. Some spells can take like 8 seconds to resolve which is annoying.

In Langrisser, troops matter more in the beginning than at the end. Once your heroes are leveled up, they're walking tanks. The troops aren't even useful as cannon fodder.

Hey, I'm replaying Shining in the Darkess right now and remember back in the day there was some kind of trick to keep the guest characters in your party indefinitely?
Anyone knows how to do it?

I double this.

Also, does anybody else think that enemies in SF3 in general have more HP, but weaker in terms of ATK and DEF, compared to SF1 and SF2?
