4916049 No.4916049 [Reply] [Original]

Sup guise?
Wanting to build a Mame cabinet. I want the machine to play all the arcade classics but I don’t care about having old Amiga shit and stuff.
1: Best place to get ROMs?
2: Better to download or just buy a memory stick off of amazon? I want to plug and play not spend a lot of time sorting folders and shit.
3: also thinking about building a cabinet to play newer games like all the VS Capcom games. Can retropie handle running that or would I need something like hyper pie or hyperspin/Tb system?
Thanks in advance.

No, you're asking two questions and both of them are retarded. On what planet would you think for one second that a Raspberry Pi could run MvC3? And whether you download or buy media with your MAME romset on it depends entirely on your bandwidth.

Then sound off and answer the questions if they’re so retarded.
Look, a local bar opened an arcade that has about 25 games but that shit wears thin quick. I want to build a mixed bag of older and newer machines to create an arcade that has ALL the games. I’d like to build a “kick it” spot for younger people who don’t have anywhere else to go. So drop the condescending language and make with the solutions.

Guize I'm thinking about building a small house, I want to have parties but I don't care about having a study or garage or that shit.
1. Should I design the house or just recycle a shipping container?
2. Do you think a battery setup would work, or should I just run an extension cord from Circle K? I don't want to deal with GFCIs and shit
3. I also want to have a jacuzzi. Do you think a hot plate would work, or should I try to run a garden hose from the boiler next door?
Thanks in advance.

Do you know a single thing about computers? A Raspberry Pi won't play modern games, and it probably wouldn't even run MAME at the level that midrange PC's ran MAME back in 2008. Take that with a grain of salt, I don't know much about the Pi. You should find a cheap 2010ish Windows PC and work from there.

>> No.4916612

>>4916049
MAME's primary goal is accuracy, and in turn it is not very resource efficient. You will not be able to run MAME roms on a Pi, I know, I have tried. You will need a proper PC to emulate MAME.
Go to /vg/ and look up the emulation general, they will be much more helpful to you.

I contribute tremendously to this board, Anon. This is just a particularly poor example of a thread we have literally every week and invariably these type of arcade oriented threads have the most pretentious fuckers in them. "Supergun" threads are some of the very worst threads on this board.

I only have been participating in this thread at all because I really like that cabinet design he used for the OP. even if it does look really easy to tip over on top of yourself or your kid - even worse than the widowmaker here.

/vg/'s Emulation General has a fairly comprehensive page for this on their wiki.
I am not going to outright give that information to you because copyright holders have paid people in the past to ask similar questions, but now you know where to find it.

>2
Either build a PC focused around the games you'll want to emulate or buy a used one.
Since MAME doesn't utilize hardware rendering, there's no need for a GPU (unless you want to use a CRT monitor with GroovyMAME or something similar), so the countless office machines on eBay are perfect for projects like this.
Anything from within the last 5-10 years is usually enough, but you can buy a used CPU to upgrade if you really need more power.

Just pick a frontend. It's personal preference and doesn't determine the limits of your computer.

I don't understand this question. The ROMs are so tiny I'd probably leave them on the boot disk which would be a $37 SSD if I built it today.

Despite my input being shat on itt, I'll still contribute that among front ends, Launchbox is by a wide margin the most economical time:results front end. There are quicker and easier ones and there are more configurable ones, it really is kind of neat how Hyperspin can have endlessly nested and cross-indexed wheels that (with enough work or paid access to community) can lead players to exactly their personal ideal assortment of games, Launchbox can be quickly and cheaply set up and offers a very classy looking interface that automatically scrapes all kinds of media related to the games.

lol yes, what you said.

I can't shake the feeling that Hyperspin is used by people that spend more time configuring their launcher than actually playing their games - although there are some sellers out there that will install Hyperspin for you on a hard drive including romsets for $50.

I've sort of come to the conclusion that we still don't have access to large enough hard drives cheaply enough to include fullsets of CD based consoles - namely PS1 and even if a 4tb hdd had the complete Sega CD, Saturn and PCE-CD sets it would feel bad to neglect PS1

You have ADD. It's far more interesting to practice a small handful of games than to have infinite games at your disposal which you'll either only play fifteen minutes apiece or you'll run into decision paralysis and never play anything.

That's because arcade games have no depth and are designed to get quarters out of you quickly, not entertain you for hours. You wouldn't enjoy them at home either. Play some console/PC games instead.

but the pure simplicity of engaging right into the action as you put the quarter its always a quality I always liked.

console games usually take a while to warm up and get interesting. Most of arcade games specially SHUMPS and Beat em ups get you instantly pumped.
