I have played Ion Maiden, and can't wait for the final release. It's the first sprite based FPS since Redneck Rampage that actually shows promise. The leveldesign is top notch, definitely better than in old Build games.

There were some delays though according to the devs on the Steam forums, I hope it won't end up another DNF.

They're not in 20th Anniversary Edition because Gearbox doesn't own the rights to them. Neither does 3DRealms/Apogee, in spite of Scott Miller saying they could use them back when Megaton was made.

Turns out that Caribbean, D.C, and Nuclear Winter, were owned by Wizard Works, of which Sunstorm were a subsidiary. Wizard Works went out of business at some point, and the ownership of those expansions passed to god knows where.
Whoever owns the rights to them probably have no idea that they do, but until those rights are acquired by Gearbox, those expansions will not be part of 20th Anniversary Edition.

Happens all the time with stuff involving companies that go under or get merged. Doom 64 was made by Midway, which also went under. When game companies go under, oftentimes those IPs get taken into holding companies whose entire existence is to buy up and just hold onto stuff that could be of value, regardless of what it may be.

It can get even more complicated with games in particular where different parts of the full product get taken into different ownerships, like No One Lives Forever's title being owned by Activision after acquiring Vivendi who acquired Fox Interactive, but the game's code being owned by Warner Bros, who acquired Monolith.

So I'm sure the Duke expansions and Doom 64 are in a similar place where it's uncertain what holding companies are holding those properties, and if those properties could even be held by multiple companies at once because of how it got split. This is why it's typically really hard to re-release old games, and why most of Night Dive's work involves just wading through legal bullshit.

>> No.4913065

>>4913050
Didn't Night Dive just C&D Kaisers Powerslave EX so they could profit off it, then couldn't acquire the rights for a long time, because owner gave his (verbal) agreement with Kaiser releasing it for free, and didn't want ND to profit off it?

Unlike D64Ex, Powerslave Ex was released along woith the game assets, and when asked about it, he said that he got permission to use it for non-commercial purposes from the copyright holder (which at the time was NOT Night Dive) (somewhere in the comments to the original release on one of the sites he posted it on)
Then Night Dive pressured him into removing the download and (presumably) stop working on it (before they got the rights).
Much later, ND got the rights to Powerslave EX, and now its gonna be released under them.

I was gonna say it's worth to pirate 20th just for the AWO episodes (some of the commentary is interesting too), because it's pretty good, but then I remember it had a few exceptions to it and you couldn't then run it in EDuke32 without problems.

Also on unrelated note. Anyone played Project Eden? It's an obscure hybrid of FPS/TPS (can switch views) and gameplay mechanics of Lost Vikings - you take control of 4 characters with unique abilities, and have to combine those abilities to solve puzzles, often taking them to the different parts of the level to interact with puzzle elements in sequence.
While you control one, you can either order the rest to follow you, or make them stay in place where you need them, then switch between them at will.
Picrelated - Amber, a completely desexualised FEMALE cyborg, speciality - heavy lifting, rocket launching, and bypassing hazardous (to humans) environments.

Night dive is hunting down every single bit of IP franchises to remaster it on their terms

Kaiser's strife is superior to GZD strife in many terms, but it has less mods
A less known case its Battlezone IP, which was Made by Activision, but Licensed by Atari, and the Code was owned by Pandemic and Activision, all 2 minus Activision fell.

When Rebellion got the Rights from Atari, for it they told the community to shut down the development and distribution of the original game, including "BzE" Battezone: Enchanced, the owner of BzE got angry and tried to continue distribute the heavily nodified game, until the community and Rebellion C&D him. As for the Code, Activision Lost the track of at the mountain vault archives when Rebellion and te Former Pandemic devs who worked on BZ tried to get it back.

Also Mechwarrior 1, 2 and 3 are on the Same spot along with crescent hawks, MW3 was owned by Microprose but its on IP hell since FASA went under and became Catalyst, and MS owns the Mechwarrior rights, and MW2 Source Code is still with Activision's vault, but Nor MS or PIG wants to do something with it, even make a full fledged remaster pack for GoG

i Spoke with Ken Miller about it, even him bets that Activision lost all of the 3 source codes for MW2, BZ98 which was confirmed, and I'76 and its sequel. it sucks.

2. If you bought the game from Steam (as Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition) or GOG.com, copying the data yourself is not required. EDuke32 will use the Windows registry to automatically identify your installation and add the required data to its search path.
Otherwise, copy the files DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS from one of the following locations to the folder created in step 1. (On Windows, the GRP file may show up as a "Microsoft Program Group".)
Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition on GOG.com: <Program Files>\GOG.com\Duke Nukem 3D

4. Run EDuke32! EDuke32 (eduke32.exe) will allow you to play the game, and Mapster32 (mapster32.exe) lets you create custom maps.

5. To run any of Duke Nukem 3D's various add-ons, like Duke It Out in DC, Life's a Beach, Nuclear Winter, etc, refer to the Official Add-on Installation Guide after following steps 1 through 3.

While the other figurines spawned normally and just stood there (Even if they clip walls, but this isn't a big deal), this one just "wallruns" while clipping the walls too.
Maybe he wanted to see if he could outrun his rockets or something, i dunno.

Well, considering that Marathon feels and plays like a shittier version of Doom64, that's not exactly a compliment, but whatever.

Thing is, I did play like three proper levels of MadSpace (the game starts with a Cyberia-ish fly-by section, which I didn't count in). Basically, the whole game is built around the "5D space"/"Lunar Fringe"/"High TImes" gimmick. Portals, overlapping sectors, or however it's realized, I don't care, but the point is, you get into a room A, in the middle of the room there are two columns, if you go between them, you get into the room B, in you go around them THEN between them, you get into a completely different room C. Sounds cool, huh? Not quite. You see, since you can't really imagine the level layout in 3D anymore, and you can't thus predict what's connected to what based on how the rooms are grouped together, the level progression basically devolves into pretty much always following the left turns or always the right turns. In other words, it is precisely this "overlapping spaces"/portals gimmick, that hurts exploration IMMENSELY. I mean, it doesn't even make any sense to TRY to map the level in your mind, which, in turn, destroys that very "but that's impossible!" feel that game was created for in the first place.

In other words, there is a reason that gimmick wasn't used more prominently in Marathon or Duke (both of which could do it), and the reason is, it adds nothing gameplay-wise, it only takes away, and, moreover, it gets really old almost instantly.

Also, both aesthetics and combat are utter dogshit. Not "Rebel Moon 1" or even "Rising" kind of dogshit, but still, notably worse than even the first Marathon.

Oh, and you can dual-wield any two weapons whatsoever in this game from what I remember. Strangely enough, that also ends up taking away from gameplay variety rather than enhancing it.

Or more like you just check all the suspicious corners and you mechanically memorize what's connect to what in a sort of a tree structure. Point is, due to portals gimmick, on the global, over-room, scale, connectivity effectively doesn't exist (any global scale connections are effectively used for making an impression, and cannot be relied upon), there is only local one, between adjacent rooms. Thus, effectively, the only way to explore is "paint the map" as methodically as you can, praying you haven't missed some important nook that leads to like half of the level you have no way of knowing even exists until you find that nook. It's simply tedious.

Thanks to even more help from some very helpful folks my ACS and DECORATE knowledge has grown exponentially!!! (read: a tiny bit) So here is an update for my arcade mode mod.

Also, pickup items aren't supposed to add to your multiplier, only give points, I forgot to mention that in the video.

The trickle down speed is currently just a placeholder, in the next update I'll be shooting for making it decay faster the higher your multiplier is, automagically with math and stuff.

Still stoked for this. The glitch of items adding to your multiplier reminded me that Doom 2016 I believe had picking up items reset your multiplier decay timer, which was a really good way to hold out a multiplier for longer and added a level of tactical choice of balancing saving items for when they're needed versus giving up their combat usefulness to keep your multiplier going. I think it's really worth considering.

Anon that posted that here. Sorry, nope! It's a dumb mod I'm working on mainly as a learning project. The idea is to recreate Doom's standard arsenal with extra feedback and pseudo-realism. Hence reloading, basic dynamic spread and all that. Probably going to make super minor changes to monsters to have them fire tracers too, if I don't end up abandoning the mod due to lack of motivation before then.

Pic unrelated, just felt like I had to include something but couldn't find anything relevant.

imo it's better when animation frames last for 2-3 ticks. You can use 1 tick frames for things like chaingun spin, beginning of the shot, etc, but the majority should last for at least 2 frames

compare for example High Noon Drifter animations and brutal doom animations, and you'll see what im talking about. Ironically, smooth doom got it right as well

I'm just about finished with Doom 64. I'm on the level No Escape. This has definitely become my favorite doom game. I love the map designs, the weapon designs, the monster designs. It's really a beautiful game in some maps and it feels really good to play. Best Doom.

Classic doom is great and all, but D64 is just something else. Only thing that sucks about is that a lot of the levels are really short since they had to work with N64's limits obviously. Would have loved to see how it would have turned out if made for PC first.

Derail, but I was just really interested: the article mentions another ad, which I found:

>In March, another advertisement, for an online games retailer, appeared in the computer gaming press (for instance, Computer Gaming World, March 99, page 89). Its dominant image is that of the naked torso of a woman, lying on an operating table, the rest of her body outside the frame. In the foreground are surgically-gloved hands, holding a scalpel. In the woman's bare flesh are incised the lines of a tic-tac-toe game.

>I buy a lot of computer games. I generally buy them online. But the image of someone cutting a woman's flesh in order to play the most patently brain-dead game imaginable did not make me want to patronize this company's services. God only knows why they thought it would motivate anyone else.

>Certainly, it is an arresting image. Arresting enough to make the gorge rise. Only the computer gaming culture could possibly view any of this as effective, appropriate or funny.

>So perhaps the critics are correct, at least to this degree: The coolness of violence, as portrayed in computer games, has persuaded computer game developers, if no one else, that nauseating depictions of violence, whether or not effective, are cool.

For what it's worth, the article was written by Greg Costikyan, who /tg/ers may know as the creator of Paranoia and a bigger proponent of games than these quotes make him out to be. The article is meant to be nuanced, starting out with criticisms of game violence before moving on to defend it. [https://www.salon.com/1999/06/21/game_violence_3/]

It is pretty challenging compared to the rest of the official Doom releases of the time, but it's definitely not impossible, especially on the lower difficulties. It may be more comparable to Hurt Me Plenty in Doom/Doom 2 though.

Reminded me of that one guy that prides himself a reviewer, but if the game allows several ways of playing them, plays in the most boring and bland way possible, then blames the game for being boring and bland.
Like taking a generic soldier class instead of several varieties of Sci-Fi wizards then complaining that there is nothing interesting to do in combat (because Soldier does not have any interesting abilities). When asked why didnt he chose an interesting class he replied "because they cant use all those types of armor and guns", disregarding that those armors and guns do not impact the gameplay in any meaningful way, unlike space sorcery.

thats absolutely the fault of the game creators. why even design multiple ways to play a game if only one way is fun to play? and then the entire game isn't designed around the idea of challenging this one fun way to play so its boring. multiple playstyles is such a lazy way to design a game, its an excuse to make the game as generic as humanely possible and if anyone complains they can just say "bro you can play it another way"

and to add onto this, as you say, what is actually wrong with playing a game in the ways it allows you too? maybe he found that playstyle interesting, but then was severely let down when the designers of the very game itself didn't find it interesting enough to flesh out. reminds me of system shock 2, every playstyle ive ever tried has been absolutely boring but someone would be quick to dismiss my criticism to say im playing it wrong

MS-DOS Doom does have mouse support, but the annoying thing is that moving your mouse up or down will make you move forward or backward. Good on you if you want to git gud at keyboard controls though, think I'd have to play on a lower difficulty to go through the game with them.

I like to use Chocolate Doom myself, very accurate to vanilla Doom, plus the mouse works pretty well.

Doom for the most part allows you to carefully pick targets from near a corner, running away to search for leftover heals every time you get injured because your HP does not regen in cover. But if you play it that way you have no right to complain that it is not as "actionpacked" as it was advertised, you are just playing it like a COD kiddie retard.

It's like playing a Sonic game without ever trying to spin or gain speed, slowing down every time the game moves too fast, jumping onto every enemy, then complaining that the game is not as fast as you were told it was.

Soldiers/Fighters in every single class based game were always the most simple and boring class to play compared to classes with more active and/or interesting abilities. They are often made for people who can't wrap their head around more complex playstyles but still want to play the game. You can find a boring way to play through any even the most fun game, it's just RPGs have dedicated class for that, but if you deliberately chose a boring class, you only have yourself to blame. Now if MOST classes are boring, then that's a problem, but luckily that is not the case.

I dont even know how to respond to that kind of lack of understanding... But I'll try. Maybe a Doom analogy would convey my thoughts in a way you can understand

Let's say I am a videogame reviewer, in the far future, where people forgot about Doom outside of a very niche community, and my review of Doom would be the ONLY review that comes up on the Search engines. People trust me and take my opinion as true.
I decide to review Doom.
>So I download it , and run it through DosBOX, ran on an emulation of Windows 19, run through an emulator of an x64 processor. The DosBOX setup is crapy, and I dont change any settings (including cycles) because nobody told me to and Icant be bothered to look at the game forums that existed at that time. game runs at variable speed of ~15 fps. I don'n know of ports.
>so I tell people game runs like garbage on modern systems to the point of unplayability. But i go on and play anyway. I refuse to take any guns because they look kinda suspicious and maybe posessed by demons. So all I have is a pistol and a fist. Through ridiculous feats of savescumming I manage to beat my way through shareware episode
>I tell people there are only 2 weapons in the game, both of them are weak
>I tell them the combat is boring and tedious because you have to run away from monsters instead of fighting them
>that you have no way to avoid damage while you pling at your enemies with pistol (ididnt bother to look at F1 and learn about strafing either), several other enemies will pound you.
>I tell them the 2 boss monsters of the first episode are way too hard and I have to save/load 900 times just to beat them and I still wasted 30 minutes trying to melee them via hit and run tactic because I ran out of pistol ammo
>the other episodes are even worse
>cant beat the final boss and declare the game unbeatable, and forever label it as unredeamable garbage.
>Since then Doom would forever be labeled as garbage since my vid wouldcome on top of all searches.

But that really how that all sounds if you have actually played the game.
Literally 90% of all his complaints are because of him not even trying to think about what he's doing.

In one of the next reviews - Frater (or Chosen) he does same shit again - trying to beat level 25+ enemies with level 5 weapon (you can tell by the model) and then complaining about ridiculously hard combat where you take too long to kill even basic mooks. Then a lot of people in the comments say they played the game and had none of the troubles he says he has, and he must be doing something ridiculously wrong.

he answered that it is definitely like that in his copy of the game, and maybe he just has a different version (extra hard mode made specially for him), despite a completely free version of the game with no such BS being openly available for download on the developers website. I think he deleted that comment along with whole chain when people called him out on bullshit, but some other comments saying that they did not encounter any such difficulties still remain.

Friggin' hell. Hmm. I'm not sure how I'd track how many mines each player has placed, though. (Lord knows the mines already need a rework to work right in deathmatch!) Making them "run out of battery" and revert to single-grenadeammo pickups could be a reasonable solution, though.

>>4913390
Odd. There's nothing special about the Doom 3 figurine, the only difference in its code is the pickup message and sprite. Might just be the item it got spawned by (loot items are sort of thrown out) and Doom's fucky physics.

What the fuck...? Ahh, shit. Looks like the code for spawning the mines is causing shit to go pear-shaped. Fixed. I'll move the mine-spawning to something else.

I'm not 100% sure of that (they seem to have done a lot of cheerful, those-were-the-days interviews about them, I read a pretty interesting one about Blackthorne and Lost Vikings recently) but they really seem to need a Starcraft 1-level fanbase to really act on bringing them back to modern platforms, and there just isn't a crowd of that size jonesing for War2. :(

It also gets a kid familiar with guns and ready (emotionally) to use actual ones. When my dad started letting me shoot the ruger 10/22 I was underwhelmed because his single shot pellet gun seemed to have more kick. The only thing about the 10/22 that was fun was semi auto being able to pop off shots quick.

But for a kid, a boy, its important being introduced to guns. There's just something about as a human "I can put a hole in that paper over there, beyond throwing reach, and I can put that hole right exactly where I want it to go". Its really thrilling.

> I couldnt tell you what kind of games to introduce them to, unironically video gaming really should be a late teen pursuit.

switch hunts are not enjoyable for me. If they're not reasonably close by I noclip every single time. Nothing more infuriating than hitting a switch and having a far off wall open for no reason at all. Like its not even a door, just a straight up wall, not even connected to the switch in a normal way. It's stupid and lazy and I do not like it.

I think the first one I've completed with Space Pirate too. I still don't quite get the melee combat and I get the feeling I wasn't supposed to be so still when switching zekes ammo...

Dude who made this here: https://youtu.be/aWRmuKoadxU

I figured as I keep making QC videos in this fashion, I want to experiment with different things to add onto the series overall. So I thought: why not ask /arena/ itself? I was thinking you guys could suggest challenges for me to try out ingame (as opposed to the runes of course), for example, try to win a match with a champ I rarely/never play or try to get X kills with Y weapon. Got any ideas?

Also I understand if this seems a little Reddit-ish somehow, but I thought it'd be interesting to get involved in the AFPS community this way.

Based on feedback from here and friends, redid the pump-animation. Probably way too fast but that'll be changed when I get around to balancing this. Also altered firing sound slightly by layering a firing sound from Nuclear Throne under it, which worked surprisingly well. Recoil effects shown are incomplete and probably nauseating!
