Fuck these things. I remember on one level, you come into a room and are ambushed by like 3 of these at the same time. Shredded my shields in seconds.

Something along the lines of "cancerous glass cannon".

It MUST have been a result of poor playtesting. You literally need to know where each one in a level is, and come at it shooting before you even can see it to stand a chance of defeating it without losing like half of your health.

The team was probably so small that they mostly tested it themselves and thus knew where each enemy was, leading to this oversight, only explanation I can think of

>> No.4909516

>>4905305

Also it's worth pointing out that this was back in the days when bad design decisions were commonplace. DooM, the main competitor that Descent tried to compete with also had cancerous hitscan enemies.

>> No.4909680

the level design is way worse. God mode doesn't help you there, and neither does the map.

Neither Doom nor Blood were in the same ballpark as Descent though. Doom honestly didn't have much hitscan (Doom 2 had a bit more), and in Blood the hitscan-enemies were very manageable, just retreat and chuck some dynamite around the corners. In Descent they'll literally rape away half your HP if you ever accidentally stumble into ONE of them.

blood also tanks hitscan accuracy when you crouch or jump, so smart positioning, and manic jumping and crouching make it a near non-issue.

>> No.4912693

I like how the enemies in Descent have so much personality despite being blocky low poly robots with no dialogue.

Excellent example of scrub-tier play, friend.

How exactly would you "immediately break LOS" there?

>> No.4914556

>>4905305
Funny thing is, they aren't actually hitscan enemies. You can dodge their bullets as long as you are far enough away from them. They woud actually be fine, if you would render their bullets and only put them in large rooms.
But guess were they put them most of the times? Poor guys are victims of bad enemy placement. Blame the level designer who put them there.

>> No.4914567

>>4914541
You hug the wall and fall back the way you came. This works pretty well in most situations, but is particularly effective in that room because they start in alcoves.

What you don't do is shuffle a little bit right in the center of the room where they can all stick it in your pooper simultaneously while you wave the standard-issue laser pointer in the general direction of one of them.

>> No.4914646

I always want to go through a level just blasting the shit out of everything, but the baddies are just too good. Those Class 1 Drillers are pretty nuts but so are the little yellow bastards that appear in the first level. Supposed to be one of the easiest enemies, but damn they are tough.

This game taught me to be a save abuser
