That's the worst example. Any enemy that makes you feel strange can end up fucking your whole day up. Paula feels strange or crying uncontrollably and does psi fire 3 - whole party takes 300 damage, game over.

I had to actually save state and sprint past all the enemies to get past the department store. It was a fucking disaster of pacing and enemy scaling here. Also, >Frank brandishes a knife!

I can't understand how you could do this? Ness is always higher leveled, never is everyone equal really, but it sounds like you run away from battles too often.

Luck relates to dodging, Vitallity relates to hp as 1 vitality point is equal to 15 hp, IQ is similar but for pp, 1 IQ point is 5 pp points. For Jeff IQ effects the chances of him fixing broken items.

I did this. Paula just died to half the fights in the game when I got her, so it was Ness hogging all the EXP and hauling Paula's corpse until she got to about level 15 (i.e. when her health broke ***60***).

So why is IQ so important for Jeff then when he has no PP? And why do I get characters that gain vitality, and no HP? And why do they sometimes gain HP without any increase in vitality?

I battle everyone that I encounter and never run (running isn't guaranteed anyway, and usually just ends up losing me a turn). I don't go out of my way to battle people, because that would be grindy and I firmly believe that good games shouldn't require grinding. I played this section the other day. I agree with and have a lot of complaints about EB myself, but I didn't have to grind to beat frank. I crushed him actually, only fighting enemies that were in my way up until that point. If I remember right all the gang members drop burgers and I had plenty to keep myself alive. I didn't farm for burgers either.

Anyway by biggest complaints on this playthrough

I pressed down too many times in the menu and dropped the platinum band in the gold mine trying to give it to jeff. There isn't a prompt protecting you from dropping items no matter how valueable they are. I'm out 25 additional defense on one character, which would've made everything do 1 physical damage for a while. I'm so mad I don't know if I'll play again.

Mushroomization on the way to milky well is complete horse shit. You have to exploit the walk off screen to avoid mushroom enemies or you're not going to be able to fight the boss. You need PSI fire to kill the boss's adds so they don't call more adds and heal the boss forever, and you're just going to wipe in one turn if paula is feeling strange. Also what the fuck is with the turn order in this game? I've noticed it will actually change in battle despite being based on speed stat. So it's RNG if you get the first turn on those mushrooms.

Another enemy you have to avoid to win the game., the gold mine has a shitload of snakes that spam poison and burn up your PP using healing B.

Probably plenty of more horseshit ahead of me that I successfully ignored when I was a kid because I tolerated grinding.

All this nitpicking goes out the window when I remember the warm, fuzzy feeling that game gave me

First of all, if you don't put your money up after shopping, you can wipe and lose half of all of it.
The enemies are retardedly strong yet offer little experience.
I wiped, went back to my last save point all the way in the desert gold dig site. Walked all the way to fourside and the hospital. Realized the hospital doesn't have an ATM. Son't remember enemies being on the first floor of the department store so I decide to use that ATM. They put enemies right at the door and they redscreen me pressing back on the d-pad. 300->0 ness trying to run, and this was with the guitar killing itself on my franklin badge. Spawn in the desert again, walk back, revive jeff. Make it to the second floor where the guitar proceeds to PK thunder jeff 3 times for 450 damage when his HP is a little over 150. And this is after it puts you to sleep on the first turn so you can't blast them down with PSI rockin.

Unironically this. I think the condiment system represents everything wrong with Earthbound. It's an amazingly clever mechanic, but the way it's implemented is so piss-poor that most players go "oh hey, that's neat" then stop bothering after playing around with it for a bit. Inventory was a needless hassle, so was the mushroom condition (and its frequency in the early game) and the idiosyncrasies with item acquisition(Jeff and Poo)and the combat could have been better with better character animations, side view, etc.

Anyone can criticize the gameplay but I'm starting to think everything else isn't good either. I used to think earthbound was a great but overrated game, and now I think it's an average and extremely overrated game.

Aside from the interesting final act, there's nothing well written about the story or characters.

So what's left and why people like earthbound, is the style and atmosphere of being quirky and surreal. But it's also absurd to say a style is what makes something good, it needs to be an exemplary example of that style. But there weren't any competitors. If Earthbound's style was common enough for people to be acquainted with it before playing, there would be nothing left to make this game special. And I predict that as we get more earthbound-inspired indie games, new people will go back and play earthbound only to be disappointed.

If I had to stretch something nice I can still say about the game, I like the visual design I guess.

Not even OP and I completely agree. I've beaten Earthbound and all these criticisms are absolutely on the nose.

However, I will say I enjoyed the story line more so than the actual gameplay. The game really does shove you into some bizarre situations, like when it expects you to be overly prepared for just about every major boss fight. I recall a lot of what OP said happening during my two or three playthroughs of Earthbound years back. Its a fun game, but it can also be pretty cruel if you haven't fought a certain enemy before or you're not aware of what kind of status effects they impose on your group.

Mother: Cognitive Dissonance. A fangame set in-between Mother 1 and Earthbound, chronicling the attempt to stop Giegue from using the Apple of Enlightenment, and his eventual descent into madness. I wholly recommend it.

It's probably my favourite game of all time. It has multiple endings, all leading into Earthbound; one of your companions is Buzz-Buzz.

The best ending, 'Severance', gained from pretty much 100%ing the game and choosing the right options allows you to save (or 'reset' Giegue at the end, creating an alternate timeline.

It's certainly the best I've found. Again, it's probably my favourite game of all time, if that says anything about it. I will say however it's made in RPG maker 2003, so it's a little clunky in places, but otherwise it's really solid.

As for the Halloween Hack, he did make that when he must have been 16 or something, which explains some of the atrocious dialogue.

ness and ninten are only stale if you dont talk to all the NPCs and piece some stuff together, for example, everyone always says ness is coragous and reckless, but as shown by the calls to his mom hes actually quite a fearful kid who cares alot about the people close to him, but he wants to keep the courageous attitude up so he can do what he needs to to keep them safe. as for ninten, i wouldnt know as much as ive only played certain parts of 1 but he strikes me as an adventurous kid who is in way over his head.
sure, you might have to look for that stuff, but i dont think thats a bad thing, it helps you get more out of every play through.
