>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I've always wanted to add an RCA TM-21 to my collection, as a fan of vacuum tube tech and monitors. The TM-21 was basically the very first RGB pro monitor - dating to 1953(!), this is the display the NTSC color standard itself is based on, with a rare earth phosphor "roundie" CRT.

Literally dozens of vacuum tubes, in excess of 4 chassis with regulated power and massive transformers and nearly the size of a washing machine (and much heavier than an washer). Building this thing in the 50s was like going to the moon, and cost about as much.

>Brits aren't willing to deliver a PVM that size, even if they are fairly local
>Americans are happy to ship it over the Atlantic, and much larger CRTs too if I wanted

Why is this?

Anyway - I'm thinking I'll pay the import charges. Will I be able to just plug in a UK power lead to it (like pic) for use here? and if so, what spec lead do I need to get, or will it depend on the model? As I said, I want a 20", but I haven't decided on the model yet. Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I don't want to risk frying anything if I get it wrong.

>> No.4864251

>>4864228
I don't know if I could personally deal with having a tube shipped overseas, but as to whether the power cable will work, that's going to depend on the model.

Some, and a lot of later ones specifically, do have multivoltage power supplies that will work with either 120 or 240 without much of a care, while others are fixed voltage: one or the other.

It is usually marked on the sticker on the back of the set, and occasionally there will be a switch for going between the two.

Guys I just had the casing of a 27 inch trinitron basically disintegrate on me yesterday, the tube is now lopsided inside the plastic casing. I can peer into it and see that what look like two large mounting brackets on either side of the tube face are misaligned. I have never discharged one of these and need to know DEFINITIVELY where to put the grounding cable. I have heard just to use a piece of metal and I have also heard to clamp it to a coil on the tube itself.

Any help is appreciated

It looks like pic related.
I have seen other CRTs with the same problem, sometimes in more than one corner.

Is this caused by:

a. Warped shadowmask caused by overheating from high constrast settings -unfixable

b. Magnetic distortion caused by speakers or other nearby magnets nearby -fixable with a degaussing coil

c. Colour error caused by misaligned purity yoke -fixable by taking off the back and adjusting the neck of the CRT

S-video is shit when it comes out of a PC. Those ports work, but they're a mess, and also they're not related to crt_emudriver, which is for getting low resolutions out of newish radeon cards that do analog video. You could use a J-rok with crt_emudriver to get s-video, but you don't want s-video directly from the PC.

You short/connect the metal anode button (under the rubber cup) to the DAG, which is the graphite paint coating around the outside of the tube at the back. The DAG has a metal grounding strap, normally spring tensioned to hold it against the conductive paint. Clip onto that grounding wire first, then slide whatever discharge tool you have under the rubber cup until it contacts the metal of the shatter hook that holds the lead and cup over the anode button. You may hear a snap or spark, you may not, most newer sets have a bleeder capacitor. You can use something like a plastic kitchen spatula to help lift the edge of the rubber cup, but keep you hands clear of everything so the charge drains down your wire. I didn't like the idea of anything loose, so i soldered the wire to the screwdriver i used and sheathed the handle with a big piece of industrial rubber hose, and it's worked well ever since.

Once done, unless the set is Sony which might be different, you push one side of the shatter hook in a little bit and lift it clear - it's fine to hold up the rubber cup to see what you're doing once you've discharged.

- CRTs are no longer produced because they have inferior picture quality versus LCDs
- CRTs emit dangerous levels of X-rays or other forms of radiation
- CRTs always have easily-visible flicker
- CRTs always cause eyestrain
- CRTs always make a high-pitched squealing noise
- CRTs contain lethal amounts of electricity, even when unplugged
- CRTs need calibration more than two to three times a year
- Overall CRT black levels are not superior to LCDs because ambient light ruins CRT black levels
- Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance
- Afterimages caused by phosphor decay are extremely annoying and are a significant downside of CRTs
- Sending an improper mode (resolution or refresh rate) to a CRT can cause permanent damage
- CRTs cannot have touchscreens
- 4:3 is so bad that nobody should use a non-widescreen CRT
- The Sony GDM-FW900 is the only CRT worth owning
- Curved CRTs have objectively inferior picture quality versus flat CRTs with otherwise equal specifications
- CRTs should not be used because they are heavier and deeper than LCDs

You don't understand, back in the 90s that kind of preservation just wasn't prevelant in Japan. For things such as cgi cutscenes, you'd have to completely make everything from scratch. That just isn't really a good option for a low-budget remastered title. They actually just emulated the PSP version with injected HD graphics. For a fairly niche super short game that they want to keep at a low price, there isn't a good reason for them to go out of their way to do that.

Whatever they should have done years ago doesn't matter, they didn't.

Is it even possible to fix the geometry of a FLAT CRT?

As much as I tinker with the service menu by adjusting one parameter it distorts somewhere else

>> No.4872120

>>4871578
No CRT ever had perfect geometry. They even list on the spec sheets how close they can get to perfect as a matter of pride. Flat CRTs perform worse than curved in this regard.

Get it as good as you can get it, then turn off the test pattern and play games.

Yep, that broadcast monitor can display both rgb and ypbpr signals so it'll display an RGB-modded N64 fine. Wegas (at least NA models) don't accept RGB, only Ypbpr, so an RGB-modded N64 won't be able to display on one without having an RGB to Ypbpr transcoder between the console and television.

RGB itself is a colorspace made from the colors red, green, and blue. Combined with sync (usually written shorthand as RGBs) you get basically the ideal signal from retro consoles.

it's RGBS because the sync is on it's own cable, lower case means the sync is embedded in the previous signal, like with RGsB.

Ive started to adjust my CRT using the service menu and in all the guides I see people keep saying "don't force your TV too far out of spec" like they're warning you against opening pandoras box without actually saying what out of spec is. So what is considered too far out of spec? The horizontal alignment on my set was off so I moved it 4 notches to the right to center it. Your implying ignorance and attempting to tell us "facts" all at the same time, yet you are totally ignorant.

PCCRTs are the definition of proper look and feel. Plenty of flat tvs are curved with a flat glass over the front. Quality isn't always guaranteed to be better because the CRT is older or curved,

Amature and total nonsense. You won't get near the same quality with a PVM as a proper PCCRT for any aspect except matching a resolution to a source.

When was the last time you went to a movie theater?

Digital projectors have sucked for years, until the advent of 4k projectors for a long time they were just 1080p/2k blown up on a huge screen which was always blurrier than analog film with no fixed resolution being projected.I still remember seeing Disney movies in the 80s and how much sharper and colorful they were compared to the Pixar crap nowadays. The only trade-off is you had scuffs and pops from the film's repeated plays but that gave it some charm.

The last movie I saw before this one in a cinema (the same cinema) was Rogue One, and I walked out 15 minutes in because the image was so blurry and dark I found it unacceptable. I asked for a refund but they refused to give me one because they didn't see anything wrong with the picture. The exit sign was also being reflected in the screen.

I do believe it is a 1080p projector in this small town cinema, and not even a good one. I saw ghosting/blurring during fast moving segments, and I bet the lumen output of the projector is not good enough for the size of the screen they're using. It might be a business-class projector rather than a true cinema projector. How they get the license to show first-run movies is beyond me. I guess studios just don't give a shit.

So far I have watched on my set-up

>Excalibur
>Barry Lyndon
>The Lost World: Jurassic Park II
>Blade Runner 2049
>Aguirre, The Wrath of God
>Blade Runner
>Several episodes of Star Trek and Hokuto No Ken

I would put my set-up, even with all its faults and having been calibrated by eye by an amateur like myself, up against that cinema any day of the week. Mine is brighter, sharper (even only running 1280x960!), and has zero ghosting.

No pics, because they're really sort of meaningless and can't convey what I see. And there are many photos of movies running on CRT projectors on AV forums that are better examples than mine.

Still, I am getting rid of the thing because it is absolutely massive and takes up too much space in my room, and I know I will be endlessly fiddling with it, never being truly happy even when I have an image which is better than what you see in some actual cinemas today.

Bonus fuck up by the people at my local cinema: the presented Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in cropped 16:9 aspect ratio. The actual aspect ratio of the movie is 2.29:1 So a good chunk of the sides of the screen were cut off. I didn't even ask for a refund this time.

How do I get actual 240p via. component for 240p DVDs in the cheapest way possible (since I don't have that much money).

Pic unrelated.

The Final Fantasy IX PC/iPhone port has re-rendered HD FMVs but the backgrounds are still upscaled.
VII and VIII are only upscales too. But for both FMVs and backgrounds.

Even X/X-2 HD Remaster and XII: The Zodiac Age only have upscaled FMVs as well, and they were planning on re-rendering the FMVs to HD, for at least X/X-2.

And even weirder, many of the pre-HD Final Fantasy FMVs have HD renders.
These HD renders are only presented in the Distant Worlds concerts, AFAIK.

So far, the Distant Worlds HD re-rendered FMVs for the pre-HD games are:
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XII
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

And it's even weirder.
We get stock footage from Crisis Core (notably the flashback to Zack's death) in Advent Children Complete (the Blu-ray version) and the Crisis Core stock footage looks considerably blurrier than the rest of the film, they presumably just upscaled it from 272p.

Okay.
So I guess even if 240p being upscaled to 480i (my Samsung most likely can't do 480p) may look bad for video games (like with the 3DO).
It works better with video/film material since scanlines probably look awful on said material.

And these bootlegs look better on a CRT since they mask the compression artifacts well.
But still, high-quality bootlegs which have video quality that is equal or surpasses the official releases is still better, even on a CRT.

But, I am just taking this into consideration, especially when I record longplays and put them on DVD (if I ever end up doing that).

>> No.4886613

>>4886480
>Does this problem mean the tube is old and tired?
Potentially, or it could be due to the difference in phosphors used between the two sets.

The L5 is using SMPTE-C where the M2 is using P22. The latter tends to be considerably brighter where as the former is aimed purely at accuracy. A properly calibrated SMPTE-C(or EBU) tube will produce essentially the exact same colors as any other tube built to the same specs, where P22 aren't nearly as precisely made and you're liable to get quite sizable deviations between the sets that use them (essentially all consumer sets and a very sizable portion of PVMs).

You could adjust the L5 to be closer to that of the M2, but you'd only be wearing the tube out quicker. Perhaps try and find a happy medium that gets you a little bit more brightness but without overdoing it.

9" is fucking tiny. In my opinion it's only good to play portable systems like gameboy on. 13" is about the smallest worthwhile PVM, and you have to use it at the distance of a computer monitor for best results.

Either get a monitor/consumer set that takes S-Video or mod your N64 for RGB. The DIY THS MOD ( http://retrorgb.com/n64rgb.html ) is easy and cheap and works very well if you have the right revision of N64. Honestly the RGB mod on the N64 is the absolute LEAST impressive RGB mod of any console, the only reason to do it is if you like modding consoles or need to have an RGB hookup for your monitor. The step in quality from S-Video is very small. I've fully accepted the RGB and PVMeme lifestyle, and even for me it's almost not worth modding the N64, despite how easy and cheap it is to do so.

I use a cheapie particle board entertainment center for my 1944Q, and it works fine. Weight limit is about 60 lbs, so it is maxing out but it works. Really the best advice is for any stand you purchase to have a support through the middle, directly under your monitor. Shoot for wood and avoid modern plastic ones made for weightless LCDs. No chance of bowing and the like.

Gonna try one more time:

>Quick question, I have a 27" SD WEGA. After being on for 30 seconds or so, I get a high pitch whine that goes away if I touch the plastic on the top of the set. I'm guessing it's some kind of harmonic resonance but don't know what would be causing it. Do the sets have some kind of dampening that could have fallen off? Probably 15khz from the flyback and the plastic case is resonating in sympathy. You could damp it down like with dynamat or something.

>> No.4894727

>>4894440

Thanks, I'm planning on opening it up today and poking around with a plastic rod to see if I can isolate the source. I'll keep the dynamat in mind. I've heard of it before but forgot that it existed.

I'll post an update once I figure it out.

>> No.4894792

>>4894727

So I think I found the issue. There is a bracket on the flyback transformer which screws directly to the case. The case amplifies the sound greatly. If you flick the case with your fingernail, it rings like a bell. I've decided I will try to put soft rubber washers between the case and the bracket, if the rubber is still too hard, I will try some foam cut from a mouse pad or yoga mat or such. Worse case scenario, I could potentially remove the bracket, but then the strain relief if provides will be gone, letting the board connections take any mechanical stresses from moving the tv etc. I doubt I will do this, I'll find a way, just talking worst case scenarios here.

Obviously with the case off this high pitch harmonic resonance disappears.

>Sadly typical FD Trinitron geometry issues and is...is that a Genesis 3?

Yeah, haven't messed with the geometry yet, I have other monitors and tvs, this was just a freebie from facebook marketplace. I'll mess in the service menu when I get the chance. The only really bad part is the upper left corner as you can see very clearly. Lower right corner also has a bit of strangeness going on. The picture does look pretty good and while I don't expect to be able to perfect the geometry by any means, it should be able to be improved some through the service menu.

It is a model 3. I bought this one back in the day when it was on clearance for $19.99, still have the box and all it's packing stuff.

I have several other genesis systems but this one is easy to test things with. It's native RGB like other genesis, has good video output, no jailbars etc. The only issue with model 3 is mono sound only and lack of compatibility to add ons. Honestly Genesis 3 are pretty decent as a stock unit except for the mono sound thing.

If I can get the geometry a bit more decent on this, I may try the jungle chip rgb mod just for a learning experience. I already have other monitors that accept rgb but I think it would be an interesting project.

Do a stereo mod to it, and the console is honestly one of the better Genesis models you can end up with. Really good composite, very clean RGB, audio is about as clean as you can get out of a Genesis and only has the potential downsides (ignoring mono) of using an asic with a 3438 and not a discrete 2612, and no Master System support

>> No.4895470

>>4895430
Yes. The asic has both left and right audio available; It's simply a matter of using the existing circuit for left and copying it for the right channel, then making sure they're both wired up to the AV out. It's the same as the Genesis 2, so it's got the proper spots for it.

Ok, that sounds very doable. I have schematics for it so I'll take a look at that. So if I'm understanding correctly, wire the existing audio to left pin in the output, pull right audio from the chip, copy amplification circuit and output that to the right output pin?

OK will do. So I've been searching for a model 3 VA2 schematic, the thing must not exist. This is what hours of googling has dug up. Apparently on pic and in any related posts they say these 3 signals are mixed then sent to the onboard LM324. Removing the "break here" will send mixed sound effects and left audio to the onboard LM324, then you take the right audio and send it through an additional added in LM324.

To me, this sounds like you could further simplify this but I'm coming up short. Many LM324 have 4 channels, meaning you could very well have each channel amplified by the same chip. I also cannot find the datasheet for the TI LM324 85a980f that this system uses. If the LM324 on the model 3 has multiple channels, there should be no reason to require an additional amp, probably just a matter of using the unused channels on the onboard one and possibly including some patch wires.

You obviously have to mix sound effects in somewhere, so I suppose leaving them in with left channel would be ok.

If anyone has or knows of a model 3 va2 schematic or the datasheet for the LM324 I would sure appreciate a link. I feel with the schematic I could figure this out. If worse comes to worse I can start probing the board.

VM/SVM is Scan Velocity Modulation. It adjusts the speed of the beam drawing to the screen to (attempt to) give a sharper image with more definite edges between things. While this does technically work, it ends up adding tons of ringing artifacts to the image, and leading to large portions of the screen looking way to contrast-y with edge blooming from the inconsistent beam intensity,

It's similar to what most sharpness settings do, but much much more heavy handed.
As for the sharpness setting, I wouldn't even say you should have it at zero; It can genuinely clean up the image and make it look a bit nicer if used sparingly. As a rule, it's safe to raise it as high as you can without seeing ringing and other visual artifacts.

It could also a combination of your contrast and saturation being set a bit high, but it's a bit hard to tell to be honest. The text looks like it's being over-sharpened/hit with VM, but other portions of the screen look like the colors are being pushed a bit too far.

Just copped my first PC monitor yesterday, bringing my CRT count up to four. I really only planned on using it for Melee netplay but it looks so good that I can’t NOT do something cool with it. As far as retro consoles go, only the Dreamcast supports VGA, right? I was thinking of maybe using it for arcade games, but I haven’t found a suitable solution yet. I’m not a big fan of emulation, so MAME is on the bottom of my list, but its ease and accuracy still makes it an appealing option. How hard/expensive/time consuming is setting up a supergun? I suppose a compromise could be some sort of FPGA system; do they make FPGA boards that simulate arcade hardware? I’m interested in hearing what you guys have to say, or what your arcade solutions look like. Thanks!

Arcade boards you can use it with directly are only high-res / 31kHz and up ones, which will often have a VGA connector on the board already.

For low-res/medium-res arcade boards you'd need a scaler.

There are a couple of FPGA based arcade/computer/console simulation platforms, FPGAArcade and MiST for example. Very few systems supported so far though compared to what you can do with software emulation.

I don't want to junk it, but I really don't have much of a choice. Yeah I'm keeping my PVM and my Panasonic monitor.

If no current is going through it, water does nothing. Hell, I know people who wash computer motherboards and keyboards in a dishwasher. The key is to thoroughly dry the boards, usually an isopropyl alcohol dip will drive out water, heat and time also helps. Water by itself does nothing, only when electricity and water mix do you get a problem.

BTW neither of those C64's work, but the TI-99/4A works and the Mac Plus powers on but I don't have boot media for it to verify that the floppy drive works. The keyboard uses mitsumi mechanical linear switches, which feel very nice.
The IBM terminal's monitor controller board is busted, but the CRT tube itself is good and the logic board is also good.
(I know the CRT works because I swapped tubes with another monochrome system yesterday. I wanted to keep the amber phosphor tube.)

This thing in pic related is a TV repairman's dream if it works. There is a service manual and full schematic available online for it - it's a Lectrotech V-7. It can generate color bars, cross hatches, and dot patterns. It also has a vectorscope for viewing the YIQ color space in real time as displayed by the TV, and it has leads in the back with alligator clips that allow you to turn on and off individual electron guns temporarily to adjust purity and convergence easily, as well as to calibrate without a professional monitor's "blue only" switch.
The vectorscope itself powers on, but I think there might be other issues with it (probably just bad capacitors).
That tiny mini-TV works. The graphics card there works and has an S-video port, and is powerful enough for gamecube emulation with dolphin. The NES games are both crummy sports games but are available, the game genie works, and the commodore dot matrix printer would work if I had a ribbon for it.

So yeah lemme know if any of you want any of it before I disappear back into the night for another year

It'd be useful to know that most monochrome CRT's are easily swappable. They are much more standardized than color CRT's, so if the neck of any two monochrome tubes is the same thickness, then you can be pretty sure the deflection yoke is swappable. They pretty much all have the same pinout, and the neckboards are also usually swappable. So if you have a 10-12 inch monochrome CRT you want replaced, this is for you.

If it's a newish TV you can *PROBABLY* just hook it to the grounding wire on the power cable. But if it's an active chassis (old) TV, that's not going to help you.

All ground points are relative. Just clipping it to a sheet of aluminum next to the TV is in no way grounding it.

Pro 15khz CRT prices have been getting ridiculous for years now. At least half a decade, probably longer.

I'd recommend just getting a decent round-screened, non-slim consumer set with YPbPr - i.e. a late 90s CRT TV of reputable make and not just 'the-first-one-I've-seen-on-a-streetcorner,' and calling it a day. If you need 480p, I'd additionally get a PC CRT, preferably a multiscan one (Like the one I'm giving away free if anyone wants it, for instance).

There is a difference in 'quality,' but it's not major once you have a YPbPr non-slim and non-flat TV set.
It also pays to be patient, as I said above. Don't just swoop in on the first CRT you find anywhere, because if you find a better one later getting rid of the crappy one you picked up is a major hassle.
(I'm trying to get rid of stuff right now and it's really awful because I feel guilty knowing that perfectly fine tubes are going to be scrapped.)

Also, if you have a little more money to spend, but just not PVM money, old 80s/early 90s computer monitors are good.

Good choices would include Commodore/Amiga monitors, of which there are a shitload of different kinds (see https://gona.mactar.hu/Commodore/monitor/Commodore_monitors_by_time.html ), and lots of third party options made by Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Magnavox, Heath/Zenith, and the like. Apple monitors, too, but those get expensive on ebay.

(There are also always more difficult options like importing a SHARP X-1 monitor if you really want to pay a lot in shipping.)

Commodore monitors tend to look really good, speaking from experience. Just be sure yours supports _analogue_ RGB signals.
The following are the commodore monitors that support at least analogue RGB @15.6khz:
1070, 1080, 1081, 2002, 1084, 1084S, 1083, 1083S, 1085, 1803, 1084ST, 2080
Some multiscan ones that can do at least 15.6khz to 31khz:
1950, 1960, the Ranger series
Some bi-scan (only 15.6khz and 31khz, no others):

The price is fucked, but the hour count is actually rather good. Even when worried about having things up to actual broadcast spec, tube swaps wouldn't come about until 30k, and for the sort of stuff you're likely going to be using it for, you could push that number up a decent amount further

Even if you were to run the thing 24/7, 365 for over two and a half years, you still wouldn't hit that 30k count.

>>4902390
There is nothing "running" through a capacitor when it isn't in use. It is/can be holding a charge well after it's been unplugged however.

Usually, a rained on set that still works once dried out has had some amount of time for that stored energy to discharge naturally on it's own, and additionally would need a decent-ish amount of water to pool up and short the cap out to something else.

Capacitors can hold a charge when unplugged, but this can be discharged by putting a screwdriver across the leads.
(but DON'T DO THIS)
If you do it and there's enough power charged up it could be dangerous and zap you, or spot weld the screwdriver to the capacitor leads.
Ideally you should leave it off for a long period of time, if you want to do the screwdriver thing.
A high wattage (very fat) resistor is preferable for discharging large capacitors. just put its terminals on the cap leads and hold it there.

Photo please.
Does it happen with any other (non genesis/mega drive) systems? Is your sync line connected? How are you connecting it? Is there an inline sync stripper or buffer or anything? Genesis systems can have problem with their csync signals if used directly because they are output from open collector transistors. They need buffering by IC's to work reliably.
A lot of SCART cables (which I don't use personally) avoid this mess by just stripping the sync signal from composite video with an LM1881. Last I knew, that's what the "retrogamingcables.uk" site did

This is my most controversial opinion (or at least it was a couple years ago.) People called me 'contrarian' for saying it.

I like smaller monitors with less pronounced black lines between the scan lines. The 20L5 is a bit big for my tastes (at least for 240p), but it's still excellent for everything else.

If you want multiscan, the *L5 series are very good. The only thing I know of that exists that doesn't work is 24khz. That's used by some arcade gear and the Sharp X68000 in some video modes.
I _think_ the Sony GVM-2020 works with 24khz, plus 15.6 and 31khz (which the L5's can do). However, those use (IIRC) P-22 phosphors (less accurate but brighter), are older, and appear to be harder to come by.

I do like playing 480p games on my 20L5, but at 20" the scan lines are too narrow and the black areas between them too big for my tastes unless I'm far away from the screen.

The Commodore monitors are pretty good, too, or at least mine is. Some of them support multiple scan modes. Hard to find though. These are also P-22 usually. Maybe always.

If you _don't_ need multiscan, I absolutely love my Panasonic BT-H1390YN for 240p RGB gaming. A 14L5 looks like it'd be really nice for that kind of thing, based on old photos that Kya (I think?) posted a couple years ago. I think it's primarily because they're smaller screens, and the scan lines (the illuminated areas, not the black zones between them) are larger, so the black lines are narrower and less noticeable but still present. That said I love the tri-dot somewhat "fuzzy" feel. It's still really sharp, so I don't think fuzzy's really a good word.

This isn't my main setup, just a consumer set I've been working on an rgb mod for. Overscan isn't adjusted correctly and the whole image needs to shift to the right, but this really highlights the part I'm talking about. It's not just screen geometry either, it's something with the picture output because it's on multiple displays. The set is way to bright now too, but I'm waiting for some trim pots and some switches to come in the mail to dial it in.

It's only on the genesis. I believe it is using composite video for sync with nothing in that line if I'm remembering correctly. It's whatever sync the genesis puts out without mods. It's using the pinout here (second one down): http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/gamescart/gamescart.htm

I do have a few LM1881 chips as I've used them in some other adapters I've made. I'm getting ready for bed, but I thought of a super easy test to try the sync stripper. I have female scart to bnc for my pvm, made several, I believe one doesn't have a sync stripper in it, but most do. I'll try both and shrink the picture so I can see the overscan area and see if it goes away. I'll try to post in the morning with results.

I could tell without reading your description that that was S-video. It's pretty noticeable difference.
The luma is sharp, but there's a noticeable lack of punch in the colors due to limitations inherent to Y/C as generated by the snes.
The actual quality of your tube is likely just fine, but s-video is what's dragging you down. You don't really need huge numbers of TV lines when the snes really only outputted 256 pixels per line. a 300TVL set would theoretically be plenty good enough.

There's nothing inherently wrong with aperture grilles. I just prefer dot trios for myself.

Yeah, I know that's how it used to be done, been seeing stuff like this since early 2000s. I just wish there was as much information on how to do clean mods as there is these old hack jobs. Example, the TRRS jack on an AV modded Atari Jr. Thing mounts where the stock RF connector used to and is very stealthy. Sure, there's info out there, but most times when you look at mods others have done it's those fucking composite ports sticking out or horribly aligned and disfigured holes.

It's no wonder that people get pissed that others mod original hardware, but if done nicely you often can't tell anything has been changed without opening the case. The best mods are fully reversible without cutting traces etc.

Honestly it doesn't matter for your own personal consoles but since I don't usually mod for others, I try to make mine as clean as I can. It doesn't make sense to reverse a mod, but I like the option, probably no real sense to that though.

Scart is pretty dumb but fortunately even most cheap cables don't cause interference, at least that is detectable on a crt. The only time I've got interference was in audio lines so I usually do a breakout almost immediately. I guess the good part about scart cables is that they usually have all the correct internal wiring and pins, so even if you ditch the head, it makes it decently easy to make your own cables.

I'm kind of in between phases now. I started out with all scart because back then I lacked an RGB capable monitor. I used a retrotek rgb to component adapter so scart made the most sense. I have a crosspoint, so I'm kind of at the point I need to make BNC cables, but I still use the scart on my larger consumer sets. I've been using the monoprice bnc cables since they are well shielded and you can cut them in half to get 2 cables from each. I should just make 2 styles for each system.
Anyway, sorry for the book/blog, I got wordier than I wanted to.

You sound sane and reasonable to me
The ability to reverse a mod easily is something that I understand the 'aesthetic' appeal of. And I usually just use shielded RCA connector coax cables and BNC adapters at the ends. I'm not sure what you're asking, you seem to be posing the question "will this work", and that's about all.

The device you posted is simply an adapter, it takes in the signal from the SCART and separates the RGB & Sync signals into individual RCA jacks. The image description is confusing, as it says RGB and Component, however I don't believe using YPbPr Component in SCART cables is common. This adapter would be useful for PVMs and other RGB capable devices that lack SCART.

Assuming you're in Ameriland, as YPbPr is an option, go for that and avoid SCART altogether. If your question was if it's worth switching to RGB over YPbPr then the answer is definitely no. They have identical quality. It's far simpler and will save money. My entire setup uses Component and it's very simple to stick with American signals compatible with things that aren't PVMs.

The PS2 and Wii have controversial YPbPr signals that are slightly off from their RGB signals, more specifically the Wii, but that's just the video encoders problems, nothing to do with the video signal itself. So unless you're turbo autist videophile, don't fret and just stick with YPbPr.

Linux, as Kya notes. If you're going to get another GPU don't bother with the quadro, just get something for crt_emudriver 2.0.
