i see a lot of people who love it and see it as the sega saturn's holy grail

i could go on about my experiences with the game but i think shaymay nails a lot of it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTkt4Kd1MLI

but to speak for myself... it's interesting, i love the game's premise, world, presentation and controls, but i feel like there's still something about the game i don't... get

i guess a part of that is all the cirque de soleil and jungian psychology stuff going on behind the game, also the game's complete lack of conveyance about anything

what do you all think about this cool but super weird game?

also it'd be cool if you guys had any recommendations for other games that have flying like this that i might like, starfox and touhou kinda stuff is cool too but i will agree that there's something about NiGHTS controls that feels unlike anything else, stuff like owlboy or mario world just doesn't have that either

>> No.4893223

It's shit. Should've been Sonic 4 instead.

go play sonic mania silly!

jokes aside you're probably not wrong, though sonic team didn't want to at the time and xtreme would've been pretty meh anyway
even then given how sonic adventure turned out... i don't know if a sonic on saturn would've aged particularly well either

maybe if it were 2D? but i think neither the public nor sonic team themselves would have wanted that at the time. not to mention hirokazu yasuhara left sonic team by that point so... more stuff to think about i guess

but we're derailing the thread here, back to NiGHTS

Nights is a blast. It's such a unique, fun game, and a perfect translation of Sonic like physics in another setting.

>> No.4893313

It's absolutely terrible

durr hurr its nawt sanik dats why da saturn fayled a hyuk hyuk

>>4893270
can you think of anything else like it? i feel like i'd really dig a game that's like NiGHTS but less ethereal so that it's just grounded enough to feel like something i get

which admittedly kind of defeats some of the appeal in NiGHTS to begin with i guess but... i'd still dig something that has gameplay elements like it either way

I admit that I played the steam version with the older graphics.
Said that: the game is beautiful, the on ground parts (if you fall) are terrible, the fly is cool, but the thing that really stands out is the music. I feel nostalgia even if I never played the game in my youth, the score is worth the game.

>> No.4893434

>>4893376
what are your scores like? or ranks at least

and yes!! the music is so good, i'm addicted to dreams dreams in every one of its forms, in nights & reala, message from nightopia, NiGHTS, everything!

>>4893434
Mmm it passed some time, always aimed for the best, but never got the perfect score, unlocked all etc, so a B almost everywhere I think. I'm not a perfectionist in games.
Playing nights with cuffs in a relaxed state is cathartic, only the spyro trilogy give me this kind of sensation.
The score of a videogame (or a media in general) really can send you to other worlds.

>> No.4893450

>>4893446
how do you play the game? do you just go into the temple after bonus time starts or do you hang around trying to score points until time is running out? i feel like the latter way is the more zen kind of feel, it reminds me of stuff like pac-man championship edition
i never knew that was even a thing until i watched an a-rank playthrough...

and yeah! oh geez what's your other favorite osts? i really wanna know now

>> No.4893582

I really love the visuals, the music and the overall feeling of flying around. I think it's a shame that there's so much focus on this sonic-like time attack thing that rather than encouraging you to explore and enjoy the levels it incentivizes repeating the same shit over and over to score the most. I think it would have benefited from a more artsy fartsy "it's an experience rather than challenge" approach, something like the non-retro Journey

>> No.4893598

>>4893582
RIGHT?! i think that's a thing a lot of sega games suffer from in general, jet set radio and crazy taxi are other games i'd love to just explore and mess around in, even as an extra feature

but at the same time... i do think it was what they tried to do to emphasize skillful, flashy flying that accomplished a bunch of stuff without just being a typical adventure game

i don't know what i think about that approach, at least with NiGHTS... on one hand it defines the game in terms of gameplay, on the other, it... doesn't click with the rest of the experience, kind of (nightopian a-life anyone?)

that's true for the west. only reason it didn't also fail in japan is because of sakura wars. nights is up there with shenmue as sega's biggest blunders

I always tried to collect as much as possible, but that's always dropped my score, so later I was just completing the levels as fast as I can.
My favourite ost is Gate Of Your Dream, I know it's just the main menu song, but I seriously freeze when it starts.
Naturally the rest is magnificent too.

>> No.4895668

NiGHTS is a rare work of genius, I think in terms of raw game design ingenuity it's better than any Miyamoto game, but the actual retail product is barely finished, it's like a game engine demo almost. It needed more levels, more bosses, more challenges, more secrets, more modes.
By the way if you can't get an S rank on every level you suck

Had it on Saturn, it made me sick, both this and Die Hard Trilogy , but fuck me it was addictive.

>> No.4895759

How good is the PC version? I seem to have bought it on Steam... Does it support analog controls?

>> No.4895767

>>4895759
It's actually really shitty, the analog controls were only patched in because fans complained that they were absent. The game controls NOTHING like the Saturn version, there is absolutely 0 momentum or flow to the movements

>> No.4895782

I always felt NiGHTS would work better as an Arcade game, or as a portable title, rather than a console game.
