4874467 No.4874467 [Reply] [Original]

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, EMULATIONS, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)

Discuss your real systems and real games here.

I've reacquired most of the consoles and games from my youth except for the portable ones. I'm torn between trying to start collecting the DMG01 and its titles or the Gamegear. I played the former more extensively, but the latter was always a favorite.

It isn't about having more or less lag. It's that, in the end, emulation is still emulation, will never be exactly the same as real hard.
Having less lag than real hard is still inaccurate.
Also, lag isn't the only factor. And most lag is caused by HD TVs actually.

like most people, I got my consoles during my youth but I did pick up some consoles in recent times:
- a Mega Drive and a Dreamcast, last year (never had any Sega consoles), they're very neat and I like them a lot.
- the N64 was my childhood shit, last year I bought a CIB NTSC-J N64 for very cheap but since the N64 can't do RGB natively, I bought a RGB modded N64 with de-blur recently and will sell the boxed N64 for much more than I paid.
I own 2 Wiis and 6 Gamecubes, (as of rn also 3 N64) so there's that.

SNES: RGB and framemeister. Very happy with it.
N64: UltraHDMI mod. Still not quite happy with it... I like how games look with the resolution jacked up on emulators, but I don't like the problems I get with emulators. I wish Nintendo would just do an N64 mini with better resolution and perfect emulation.

I still held on to my Gameboy SP for all these years and now I'm just buying the cartridges for games I wanted as a kid. As much as I prefer original hardware I make an exception for 8 and 16bit games as I like to use save states and speed up the boring grinding sections. Currently all my retro hardware sits in my closet as I move so frequently it has become a real pain to pack it up carefully each time. The biggest pain is the CRT. It's too expensive to ship them so I sell them and try to buy a new one when in the place I'm moving too, but currently in my area there isn't anything good.

But what really rocks is playing fan translated games on the original hardware.

I embrace it all. Whatever is most appropriate for the specific task at hand. I'm excited to buy a repro cart of Far East of Eden Zero when I get home.

For what purpose? Any LCD has all the color depth needed for that muted palette and with less eyestrain.

>> No.4929407

All my LCDs aren't 4:3 and I don't really enjoy playing with the black bars on the sides. It's something I always wanted as a kid, super gameboy, pokemon being played with the transfer pak in stadium, etc didn't make the games full screen. As soon as I had a way to actually do it, starting with emulating on the xbox, I was way into it. I don't really notice any eye strain, it doesn't bother me one bit.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

So my mom bought a dresser and inside was an SNES. I never had one as a kid so this is pretty cool to have now. It's got all the cables and stuff, plus a controller (one nintendo one and another off-brand one that looks kinda rough) and 3 games (DK Country, Super Mario World, and some sort of combo cart of Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World).

I don't know if it works yet, I don't have a TV with component inputs anymore. I guess I'll check around craigslist for a cheap CRT. I'd rather buy physical games if possible. What's the best place to buy the actual cartridges? Any games in particular I should check out? My first console was a PSX so I never really played anything older than that.

>once a month use isoproply alcohol and cotton swabs to lovingly clean system, cables, controllers, and games
>keep boxes for every game in meticulous shape stored in a big shoe box
>find out about ps1 one day, decide i want one
>too little to have a part time job, so sell snes collection to a neighbor for enough money to buy ps1

MFW I'm still haunted by this. I kept my collection so pristine that it didn't even look used aside from some very light wear and tear on the game boxes, mostly from humidity. I will never see that perfectly maintained system and games that I cared for every single month and that kept me endlessly entertained.

Dang, all of the reasonably priced models near me are 13inch. I also found a decently priced 20" but it doesn't have rgb. I think I'm going to hold out. I'm hoping I can luck out and get a cheap 20" by virtue of being in Hollywood. I used to work at a camera /lighting rental house and later at a post production house while it was closing. Basically, I'm retarded and could have had a stack of these things for free. I just didn't have any interest back then.

Yeah, I'm not going to out myself as more of a retard than you'll think I am already by saying how much I paid for it but they're getting more and more hard to come by here in the UK at least. Then you've got shipping/collection which is still a crapshoot.

That being said a friend of mine found a 14" PVM lying in the street while out running two weeks ago, so they do occasionally show up for the fortunate.

If you've got the skills then go for it man, it's worth it. Guy I bought the PVM from collects CRTs (has about a hundred PVMs in storage alongside lots of high end consumer sets) and he was really upset at the fact that the technical skills required to maintain them are going extinct.

We're lucky here in the UK that RGB through SCART on consumer CRTs was a thing even at a fairly early date - I remember my dad having one in 95/96, although I never had a RGB capable console to enjoy it with for years. Getting a good CRT in this country boils down to being able to transport the bastard back home.

What's this general's opinion on buying remasters of classic PC games vs. tracking down the original CD and jewel case?
Most of my games are circa 2002 so I'm not really one to judge, but I'd sooner neck myself than pay $20 for an "HD" version of Age of Empires when the original still looks great on my 48 inch television.

Kind of depends what you're after, Anon. In this thread, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone to disagree with you, but most people don't keep older operating systems active or even have disc-drives anymore. For my part I never had a PC until 2002 and was a heavy pirate for several years so it's not a problem I have.

Also the newer released can (not always are) be much more convenient to do multiplayer with nowadays.

>We're lucky here in the UK that RGB through SCART on consumer CRTs
Yankee here:

I always enjoy when people from most of the world try to explain why my Svideo is terrible, and that I should use RGB....I love explaining that we had only one consumer set ever that used SCART (RCA DIMENSIA) and no consumer sets that had RGB that I am aware of.

Sometime in the early 2000s, we started seeing SD tvs with component....but that was at the end of the production for CRTs.

Comparing Svideo to Component to VGA is not a difference I find worth the cost. Some titles don't like that video format, and it causes artifacts. Native format produces a happy medium. Svideo looks great on a good set, no doubt.

I don't think most people in the Scart world realize that we pretty much missed out on it. Hell, very few of us used more than a coaxial connection through the late 90s. I moved from my parents home in 1998 and my first tv was a used Zenith made in the late 80s. It had Svideo.....I used composite video and loved it.

VGA is great, but too meme tier for me. If we had better consumer sets (with scart), I would probably have a different opinion.

just an update if anyone cares. I bought a composite to HDMI converter just to see if the thing even works before I bother trying to hunt down more games or a proper CRT to play. So far everything seems to work. The games even had saves on them from whenever they were last played which I guess means the batteries are still okay in them. Took a while to get started up though, had to reset it a number of times to get anything to come up. The Mario games are better, usually booting up right away. DK Country seems to take a few tries before it starts up. Is that normal or could it mean the cart is damaged? The contacts on the DK cartridge are dirty and/or bent is the most likely cause (since the Mario games boot fine). Rubbing alcohol applied to the contacts to clean them would be a good first step. Use a cotton bud and wipe up and down along each pin for best results. You could also clean the whole PCB of the cartridge, but you'll obviously need to take the cart apart for that.

If you have a look at the cartridge slot on the system, see if any of the pins inside look like they are mis-aligned from the rest. Cleaning the pins on the slot would also be a good idea, but you would probably need to disassemble the machine if you want to go that way.

The Genesis that belonged to my father has been passed down to me. He only had sports stuff, Golden Axe II, and the Strike games, and I’ve bought 10-12 affordable games here and there over the last 3-4 years. My everdrive x3 is supposed to deliver today. There’s too much I want to play for me to not.

My OG PSX is dead, but I bought a PSone last year. Love that console design.

I didn’t have a SNES at all until 2013. Ended up giving to my brother and buying Jr because I LOVE that design. I have 10-12 physical games for it too. I only really want 3 more physical then I’m going to look into a flash cart. Many I wish to play, but don’t care enough to buy them individually at absurd prices

How do you keep yourselves from buying every fucking retro console you see. Whenever I run into a $5-10 Playstation or game gear I'm compelled to buy it or it will bother me for a week afterwards if I don't. Is there any login in this?

Alright boys, I'm here to preach to the choir. I've been doing a bunch of fucking around with a modded ps3 and ps2 the last couple of days. They each have ps2 games loaded on their internal hard drives and i have to say the original PS2 connected to a CRT through S-Video looks better. The colors are crisper and the lines sharper. I'll be doing an RGB mod this weekend so I should be able to get even better color soon. Well, I'm satisfied that the original hardware + CRT bullshit is not a meme. Feels pretty good, i was worried modifying the ps2 would be a waste of time if the PS3 basically put out the same quality. I should also mention that the PS3 is not a PHAT so it is emulation as my slim doesnt have native backwards compatibility

The software emulation on the PS3 is janky as fuck in general, I use it for a few choice games but the original PS2 is better in just about every way.

In the late 2000s a head PCSX2 developer left the team and took his code to Sony, where they incorporated it into the software emulation of the newly revised PS3 model. It's a base emulator with individual titles on PSN using their own 'hacks' to mask problems and keep things smooth. It's essentially a hacked up version of an emulator that really wasn't that far along yet.

Guess this is the best place to ask. Just picked up a couple games from a yardsale for my NES (ducktales and kirby's adventure), but they're both giving me the Blinking Gray Screen(TM). This is despite thoroughly taking them apart, cleaning everything and the pins, and so on. Normally blinking gray screen means a problem with the 72 pin connector, but all my other games work perfectly fine, so it's not that. Any ideas?
