The time paradox ties in with the game's theme of fate. One of the songs translates literally as "Children of Fate".

It also does lend to some fan theories that frankly make the ending a little more interesting. I think the designers have even admitted that in interviews.

I always hated this theory. It bothers me that nearly every "nerd-site" in the world has entertained this theory in their Top 10 Mindfucks in Video Games! lists. It just seems lazy, really. I can't be bothered to figure out the story by reading the dialogue so I'll just say he's dead. I mean its not like anything else in this game makes any sense lol amirite guys!
In other words, from what I gather the theory is this: There's a lot of things in FF8 that don't make any sense, so you chalk it up to Squall being dead. Now suddenly everything makes sense. Does that makes sense to you? The idea is that everything in FF8 after disc 1 is flowingly incoherent in a dreamlike way. I think this gives the player an excuse to not pay attention to the story, setting, and characters and just simply go through the motions until you reach the end. This is a shame because I think FF8's story is interesting and original. The Squall is dead theory just completely destroys the narrative, everything just stops making sense.
But maybe I'm missing something here. Square went out of their way to discredit the Rinoa=Ultimecia theory, which I thought made much more sense, but they didn't say anything about Squall is dead theory, to my knowledge. Whatever.

As for his icicle wound, it pierces his right side, completely missing his heart and vital organs. I am pretty sure that IRL you could survive something similar with modern medicine. In FF8 we see people being injured and being healed through traditional medicine which takes time and leaves scars. Squall on the other hand was the leader of an assassination attempt on the sorceress -- letting him die would mean losing a valuable source of information and traditional medicine takes too long. It feels like a cheap explanation, but Squall was a priority and I think that advanced medical magic was used to heal his priority wound to keep him alive so that they could interrogate him. It had to be effective not just to save his life in the short term but also to make him strong enough to survive the actual interrogation. We already know that there is medical magic in the game (cure, cura, curaga, full life, esuna, etc) and it follows that Squalls wound was treated in a similar matter.
