My pick is Battlezone 1998:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbbXRDuvETM&list=PLCE3MvyVaqfmGBcSCNsy40GhFvOefeJFQ

This is a game that I still play. It's a really good mix of classic RTS mixed with the classic Battle Zone formula. Not one that many talk about.

I also have to chose the original Half-Life, Thief The Dark Ages (mainly a PC gamer back then) and Metal Gear Solid on the PS1.

Here's a list of note worth games from 1998:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_gaming

It was one of the best years of the 32bit/ 64bit era. Plus high quality PC games were everywhere. The Sega Dreamcast launched in Japan that year and Sonic Adventure was released December 1998 in Japan.

Starcraft or Thief. There are no other options.

Battlezone is great indeed. Although I like the second one more overall, the first has better gameplay.
Remember playing online few years ago and got my ass raped by the 3 people community. Fun times

Ok but I say 97 was heavier.

So many good games came out in 97/98.
I almost can't choose a favorite.
Banjo-Kazooie, Crash, Spyro, Medievil, Zelda... All great titles.
If I really had to choose I would have to say Half-Life, though.

Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate. What a year. I get mad when someone says we are living the best years of pc gaming.

it’s arguably the worst, steam is oversaturated with shovelware and newgrounds tier games

I agree. Actually I've been hearing "this is the best year of videogames history" since 2003 or so. And from 2004 to 2010 I just remember everything being abysmal.

The sequel to one of the greatest arcade racers of all time was released in 1998.I love Daytona 2. Shame it was never released on home consoles.

Great year.

For me it would be Half life number one. Never played a game of that caliber perhaps ever up to that point in terms of overall production and how big of a step up that came appeared to be. I had my 3DFX Voodoo 3000 brand new for that game and it looked magnificent for the time.

Of that list I’d probably put Starcraft number two.

Delta force had an amazing multi player long before other games had large scale servers. MASSIVE multiplayer maps for the time and fun game modes like bombing bases etc with fairly realistic physics.

TRIBES was a fun game I played a bit of as well but can’t really remember much of it

Vanilla had better single player campaign, for multiplayer obviously BW was better.

1995-1999 were great years for gaming in general.

Tex Murphy: Overseer is one of my favorites from 1998.
