By "retro" I mean games which follow the definition provided by the board rules, which exclude PS2, PS3, PS4, XBOX One, Nintendo Switch, or other non-retro consoles.

You know I've spent the last few minutes thinking about this and I've come to the conclusion that rating a game's visual flare by its year alone is pretty stupid. Going by year alone does not take the actual power of the hardware into consideration; for instance, Combat and Solaris both came out on the same hardware (the VCS) but they're almost a decade apart in terms of release date.

Oh, I see, you're autistic. Yeah so the point of the thread wasn't to take the word "year" literally. It's more to invite a discussion about games that seemed visually advanced for their time. Sorry about your condition causing the literalism. It's okay if you want to talk about games that were impressive for their hardware, rather than "year," as long as they're "retro."

No you retard, the year a game came out alone is far too broad a metric to evaluate said game's visual fidelity.
>It's okay if you want to talk about games that were impressive for their hardware, rather than "year," as long as they're "retro."
It's very obvious you're new here. Maybe you should have included that in the OP to begin with instead of getting mad when people have a problem with the dumb qualifier you listed.
>Oh, I see, you're autistic.

Most visually impressive 2D retro game?
Take your pick from a dozen Capcom and SNK fighters, whichever artstyle/setting you like the best.

Most visually impressive 3D retro game?
It's a toss up between Soul Calibur, Homeworld, and The Wheel of Time. All released in 1999.

None of these two games are as visually impressive as super monaco GP. And they sure weren't ahead of their time in terms aesthetics, 2D arcade games already had better visuals too.

>most visually impressive

k, lets try:

1989, Final Fight CPS, best sounding and looking game on the planet, there was nothing like it

1990 - i would say Raiden, seibu kaihatsu...

1991 - Street Fighter II World Warrior, this was a total jaw dropper, it looked more like an anime and less like any of the previous arcade games. SFII changed games and graphics forever.

1992 - Champion Edition, SFII was still the visual king in 92.

1993 - Samurai Shodown was a game changer since it dethroned SFII for the first time. Best sounding and looking game by a huge margin.

1994 - Daytona USA was stunning and totally ground breaking.

1995 - SEGA rally championship, model 2.

1996 - Virtua Fighter 3 is the best looking game on the planet. There was nothing that even remotely came close.

1997 - Street Fighter III CPS3.

1998 - Daytona 2 Model 3.

1999 - Namco's SoulCalibur Dreamcast port was extremely influential and ground breaking. And it was so weird to see a console title taking the lead over any arcade game from that year.

After 2000 the advances in 3D graphics were so incremental from year to year, it's hard to get excited about any graphics any longer.

Great list, but if I were to nitpick I'd argue the SuperScaler games like Galaxy Force II and AfterBurner II were still visually very impressive and would still triumph over Final Fight and Raiden by 1990. Even if they were a little shlocky, that faux 3D with constant scaling sprites were quite a thing to witness back then.

I disagree, watching 3D evolve abd come into it's own has been very interesting, but to each their own.

On a related note, fir 1982 I submit MS Flight Simulator. In stills it doesn't look all that amazing, but the hud being all working instruments and the play area being a huge open 3D environment that you got to fly around looked incredible.

It was either Doom or Virtua Fighter depending on whether you visited arcades or had a PC.
