I think Super Metroid would be greatly improved if someone could make a patch that made the controls work more like the later games:

1. Instead of having two separate buttons to angle up and down, make L angle up by default and if you tap down then Samus angles down. Let's face it, you need to angle up 99% of the time, it's rare you need to angle down, so the extra button press to get to it is perfectly fine.

2. Hold R to activate missiles, press Select while holding R to switch between Missiles and Super Missiles. When in Morph Ball mode, holding R activates Power Bombs.

3. Now that missiles aren't on a toggle, you free up the Y button (normally "cancel item"). Tapping Y could toggle the Grappling Beam and X-Ray Visor (press once for grapple, twice for x-ray, third time for off). The use of these items is rare enough that cycling through them wouldn't be too bad.

These changes would make switching between items so much smoother and faster. The portable games (Fusion and Zero Mission, primarily) made some of these changes due to having less buttons on the GBA and most of it was for the better in my opinion. Combine that style of weapon toggling with the extra buttons on the SNES controller and it would make Super control PERFECTLY. No more fumbling around with the Select button to cycle between 5 fucking items, it would be much more streamlined.

If I'm being honest I always appreciate a not-too-brutal final boss. I fucking hate having to replay a final boss over and over but I can't just walk away at that point either because 99% complete is too close to 100% for my autism not to kick in.

The final boss of a long, difficult game shouldn't be a total pushover but I'd rather it be kind of fun and unique instead of just more difficulty, like a reward for reaching the end.

Same reason a lot of old games have suboptimal controls: They were doing a lot of new things and came up with the best they could at the time. Decades of refinement later and we can now see how those controls could be streamlined and improved, but that wasn't all so clear back in 1993.

I think Ridley is the true boss in terms of difficulty in SM. Mother Brain is supposed to show how powered up you've become, because you literally can't get to her without all the missiles and health you've picked up, and now you're strong enough to finish her off. And Samus doesn't even have beef with her. Mother brain should keep coming back like samus does.

>intense fight
After doing enough damage, mother brain starts charging her hyperbeam and shooting you. If you get hit, the metroid swoops in and gets her and refills you, brain stands up, hit metroid and metroid flies off alive. You resume mother brain fight. If you get too low, the metroid flies in again and gets blown away before she can help you. You get hyperbeam from the death. Brain still has a ton of hp though. Do you have enough to make it? Do you need to crystal spark? Once okay. Twice, no. Brain interrupts your animation and smooshes you. Decaptitate brain with hyperbeam. She keeps screaming at you and her hand is trying to smack you.

Drop a power bomb in her mouth. It never gets old.

I do want it to be a demonstration of samus's power and rage

That is cool, it just sucks that it's too easy to cancel the somersault. It's also annoying that if you mistime the space jump even once you just fall to the ground and aren't allowed to recover it at all. In later games if you mess up the timing there's a brief "cooldown" period where you have to wait to try again, but if you're still in the air after that passes then you can go back to space jumping.

I don't like actual puzzles in my metroid games, I like it when the environment itself is tough to navigate and you only hit the occasional roadblock because you need to think outside the box or get a new item.
