I remember there being an effort to do that with scripting.
Result is that player fullstop on floor contact produced nauseating effect when coupled with all other, harder to edit factors. Making the stop faster without making it instant also proved to be difficult (i dont remember why, kinda lost track of the thing)
The conclusion was that to improve Doom platforming there must be a complete rewrite of player physics that may or may not result in incompatibilities with the original movement mode.

In theory it wouldn't be that hard to add something like Bullet or ODE to a Doom sourceport to get things like friction, angular momentum, etc...
And there is no way to reproduce the original physics behavior using a physically correct library. If I'm not mistaken Dark Places tries to do that for Quake and you can get close but there's a 1% of cases where it behaves differently, so you're also going to need a switch and to support both systems.
And still platforming in the original Doom setting is going to suck because you can't see where your feet are.

(well, not quite, a later iteration of this map from "abandon").

Jesus FUCK do I feel exhausted. And it was only, like, 130 enemies. Now, the next map has 170 (or (so it says).

Second abandon episode, so far, is so much anal than the first one, it's screeching-inducing at times.

Because even if you have a single round of ammunition for it, you can set up a turret from it, and that turret will fire ENDLESSLY at every enemy it sees, until everyone is dead. This, when used correctly, can save you ridiculous amounts of ammo. It can and will kill any boss in the game, multiple bosses, whatever, anything that is in the room the turret was set to go, is effectively dead.

Hexen 2, Strife, and Blake Stone are generally neglected by the /vr/ doom community.

Im personally guilty of this because I just never got into Hexen 2, played only the demo and I hated the limited weapon selection (like Hexen). The mithril wall you have to dissolve in the underwater passage also looked like it was made of straw and something about this was also a turnoff since Mithril is not supposed to look like that at all.

I managed to torrent or ftp Strife once and I couldnt even get past the starting area and fell in the river and died. I really didnt like the story for it either, a lame excuse for not including female characters in the game.
> no women, why even bother living as a slave for alien overlords
I couldnt figure out how to get started in that game anyway, just kept being killed before I could get anywhere.

> Blake Stone
Back in the day I loved me some BS but unless someone made a source port for it the mouse turning speed is way too low even with the slider set to maximum, and it forces the player to use the old keyboard setup. Which is really annoying and can make even a pro FPSer humble.

>>4869586
> Rise/Triad
People fleece it for resources, understandibly and justifiably, but the engine is quirky and the gameplay is silly. It has an interesting dynamic with the infinite ammunition and its easy to handwaive that.

But it doesnt have much longitude for being modded and with the game being so focused on its existing balance it would just be out of place and . Its perfect the way it is, and dated to 1994. It just doesnt change.

Something about this just gave me the idea that maps or areas of maps in a retro fps ought to have special palettes associated to them. Talking about Blood reminds me of these areas with lots of green shrubbery and it reminded me there's no rich neon green color in the game. Its just fine since it doesnt need that much...

But if you wanted textures that had specific coloration like that you could switch the palette, nothing else would be affected. Kinda a juggle but it could be managed.

By the way, you gave me a good opportunity to ask a question about those FPS we mentioned. What's your favorite FIRST level and why? Like i said on the previous thread for me is Heretic's first level because it's a nice setting and it brings back good memories. Very nostalgic, imho. >> No.4869682

The thing that pissess me off about Quake is that some levels are clearly designed to be beaten from shotgun start, while others expect you to have weapons from previous levels. The game is from that awkward period of FPS where they couldn't figure out if they wanted to balance resource consumption around a continuous campaign, or stick to the strategic design of Doom levels. It's inconsistent, and makes the game's SP feel even more disjointed, nothing like the masterful deliberate design of the Doom games.

I know I'll get insulted for this, but it's a problem I have with "transition" shooters before Half-Life in general. The latter at least don't straddle the fence and commit to a continuous world as opposed to individual artistry. Even Unreal designers were still undecided in this respect.

Seems like it could have been a lot more, like if there were more types of monsters which you had to do different things to fight against, avoid, or fend off, maybe a bit like Lasting Light.

I kind of like the 'style' it's going for, I suppose, but it's very barebones, and doesn't have a lot of lasting appeal.

One error they made with the switchhunts was occasionally having a Bridge level you have to go through without doing anything related to the puzzle. The equivalent of a slaughterwad where korax simply tries to kill you. Part of the puzzle may be doing it in the right order so that, for the hub, you can get a shortcut going so that you dont have to keep going through that map repeatedly.
> going through this map may be required each time you want to go back to the hub, the hub only leads to this map, which then leads to the switch-hunt
> but to progress the switch hunt you have to go back to the hub, so do it in the right order so you can skip half or 3/4 of the toll map

Having only 3 main weapons plus a switchblade
> gonna have to make that 4 mate.

Pottery
That goddamn phoenix rod flamethrower. Aside from the staff its literally the most useless weapon to use for the tome powerup.
> inb4 it doesnt use ammo
> except that the game is overflowing with ammo

Best weapons to use with the Tome:
Goldwand - shotkun blasts fired pistol speed with a weapon that is rarely used so it practically has infinite ammo, and then you get the ammo back lickety split from the mummies you killed. And that number of hits means stunlock and you can whip it around effortlessly. Claw is better but this is just so easy to use and you dont need a crowd to make the most out of it.
Claw - Lets just KILL EVERYTHING and make it curl up in a ball stunned, uses lots of ammo but its worth it.
Hellstaff - Can destroy a horde if you bottleneck them, fire several shots just to make sure. Will deftly destroy ironliches. Also hellstaff rune ammo grows on trees and you can carry an obscene amount of it.
Mace - Those big cannonballs. Its built for the tome combo. But you have to stand still. Oh and it doesnt work in the water either. And it doesnt work on bosses either. And its a rare weapon. The list of "And"s just seems to go on.
Crossbow - If you got to, I guess.
Phoenix - Free ammo, but the damage is shit. It also whips around more than my dick, so you cant move.
>>4870193
you piece of shit, what the hell is it with people hating random damage?
I dont like the 1d8 variance either but you've got to have random damage otherwise the entire game becomes one big equation and has no suspense to it.

50-100% of listed damage is a good rule of thumb to use, the original Fallout games worked like that most of the time. Add a small critical hit chance that adds 100% of the listed damage.
> bullets list "14" so they cause 7-14 points
> small chance it does +14 on top of that
> revenant fireball says it does 64 so it causes 32-64, small chance it does +64 and kills you
Taking risks should be punishable, real life is no different.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.

Strife gets neglected because there isn't much to talk about, short of when a newbie comes around and asks about it and maybe starts playing it, then starts talking about what he thinks about it, and that spurs a brief bit of discussion, as people get into what an unusual game it was.

It's really neat for its time, and has gorgeous fucking art, but it's also really quaint and has very limited replay value. Further, usermade content for Strife is *extremely* rare, so there's almost never anything new to talk about, even Heretic and Hexen gets more content made for them, and that's already pretty sparse. Like, there at least exists a few short campaigns and megawads for those, there's a few people who pay attention to them and make something every now and then.

Not Strife, it doesn't have that, it's the red headed stepchild of Doom engine games.
There's like, ONE such adventure, which is a large level that's sort of like a few smaller hubs joined together, creating a short adventure. Not bad, but also nothing amazing either.
Maybe sometimes, there's a gameplay mod made for it, or one is adapted to fit it.
Weapons Of Rebellion is like the one really good one.
This probably comes down to how tedious it really is to develop new content for Strife, because of how peculiar things are set up.
For instance, peasants can be different people on different map slots, depending on which color their clothes are and their Thing ID and shit, meaning you can be placing what you think are just background extras, but they're like all fucking Harris because you're on map slot 2. This stuff is kind of hard coded.

Predictability was a mistake for gunshot damage. But the model I suggested is still reliable enough. I DO not think you should just be able to count on a specific number of hits to take down enemies, it should catch you off guard when "it takes just one more" so that way you dont do stupid stuff.

The SSG blasts for the HK and Arach yknow situations where you use that you're normally being cornered or letting them get too close. You should pay for that by needing "just one more" so you can get clawed a couple times. Its a Slot 3 weapon so you should expect Slot 3 performance from it.

The Rockets tho im okay with that. But you can technically kill an HK and Arach with 2 rockets (256 splash + High Rolls on both impacts). It can also take 3 Rockets to kill a Caco if the damage rolls are low.

>>4870257
Makes it so that you fear being hit by them and do your best to not expose yourself to fire.

Im serious man the Goldwand is where its at when it comes to Tome damage.
(you are right, the tome is not necessary, but its very fun and it tears apart spaghetti knots satisfyingly)

I used to think the Claw was because of the rippers and the damage on the main hit. But it does blow through alot of ammo and it is one of my go-to weapons (Plasma Rifle quality damage) when I have a problem. So to make the most of that you really do need a crowd lined up or a line of disciples up on a wall.
Really it comes down to these as the only weapons ill bother using the Tome with.
Goldwand
Claw
Hellstaff

Because the phoenix rod is nice just by itself normally, the rocket launcher damage is just fine to apply when you got the spare ammo laying around.

The one weapon among all of them that is pedestrian, normally or tomed, is the Crossbow. Its usually sitting at 50 ammo too.

Open up Strife in Slade and go look through the animated frames for NPCs and doors and shit, they're extremely smooth and detailed in their animation.
They have lots of frames and they use their palette to the fullest.

Doom has great graphics, but there's plenty of places where you can find crude hackjobs if you look close. Some frames are also incorrectly offset, making some animations look less smooth than they actually are (they're actually pretty good).
Strife has almost none of that.

No it would be 32-64 since the average of 10-80 is 45 and that range is technically lower than the vanilla average.

The critical chance could be something like 5% just like it is in many /tg/ systems. Thats where you get the +64 tacked on. But assuming it would roll max is a worst case scenario and if you've got armor it literally could not one-shot you as long as you had more than 30 points of it.

Yeah, the 1d8 is far too much variance. I can agree with 35-65, but Strife's 1d4 always felt a lot more reasonable to me so I'd lean more towards 40-80. They're missiles, they should be damaging and punishing.

Played through the first version of MadFox' Tormentarium:
https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/torment.html

It's a stylization. MadFox has his own distinct style, as evidenced in Abandon and earlier versions of Abandon maps, and this is not it. It's meticulously stylized after vanilla Quake campaign and Armagon. There are lots of intricate non-functional environmental elements that tend to trip you and get you sort of stuck on them. It's large, but at the same time very cramped, overly convoluted and, and this is important, contains very little experimentation characteristical for this author. It's also noticeably gamey in how it treats pickups and indicates main progression routes, which is highly uncharacteristical for this author. From roughly the halfpoint, once you get the idea that this is an attempt to produce a professional-"""quality""" level, it plays like a complete and utter busywork.

What I think it boils down to, is something like this."However you look at it, this level is a professional-grade level by force of any sort of criterion any of the actual authors of both vanilla Quake and Quake addons could've used while creating their commercial products. I am perfectly capable of producing professional quality levels. However, I am not paid for that. I am an amateur (while not being a novice, the same way being paid professional and being an expert are different things), and I feel very okay to continue being an amateur. And whatever the reasons I do my levels for, it is definitely NOT in order to fit some random nobody's personal tastes or moreover fit to in some bullshit """muh quality standards""" criteria, created by some schmucks who have ever had a real job (I definitely do have, now that we are at it) and prefer to spend their time making themselves seem important before some other jobless schmucks. So, yeah, hope you """enjoyed""" this ''''"production""" pretty much the same way I """enjoyed""" making it."

>So I've been replaying Deus Ex after 11 years and I noticed a lot of its flaws. It's still a great game, but it's definitely not the greatest. The level design in some places is unnecessarily convoluted. Hong Kong is a mess for example. You can hear MJ troopers caughing and humming while in Maggie Chows apartment, kinda robs you of that surprise by exploring and exposing them yourself.

>Brainlet. You don't know shit about convoluted leveldesigns if you think Deus Ex' are anywhere near convoluted.
>Also, HL leveldesigns aren't simple, they are inbred-retard worthy and should not, by any stretch of imagination, be considered anywhere near norm (yet they sadly are).

Also, I'll elaborate on HL. I think it presents an attempt to humiliate the player by combining insultingly primitive layouts with unpredictable difficulty spikes unrelated to said insultingly primitive layouts (and more often than not following directly from numerous """enhancements""" to the Quake engine HL sported and generally horrendously shit mechanics), kind of hinting that the player can't handle even THAT much. Moreover, I like Another World (which is, by and large, THE HL progenitor), I like Heart of Darkness and I love Messiah, and I consider neither of those games primitive layout-wise the way I consider HL primitive layout-wise. Moreover, even Opposing Force is more or less okay in my book when it doesn't devolve into box-stravaganza, even though that game is very much hampered by loading screens occurring every five minutes or so. It's just HL that I think is trying to frame the player as an incompetent retard (while presenting itself as """""intuitive""""").

All of that stuff sounds really fun, especially the barrel throwing and the phoenix orb. I'm looking forward to it man, I have a good time playing that mod. I've toyed with the idea of adding an extra function to holding the zoom key, but I ultimate decided against it because it might cause further confusion with the controls, which GMOTA suffered from really bad before I went back and fixed everything.

blaz's arsenal feels too lacking compared to doomslayer. his subweapons are good but doomslayer's grenades are better and he can heal himself from ranged dagger throws instead of the power sword attacks up close which can also be really powerful when you get a dagger subweapon. doomslayer is just outright better than blaz in every way. more damage, more options, safer playstyle, faster. not saying nerf doomslayer but blaz needs some buffs.

>> No.4871378

Blaz still hits harder, Doomslayer just has more weapons. If I buff Blaz any more then we'll be at the same problem as before in that he'll be too easy.

he only really hits harder with power sword attacks or sword throwing. three or four sword slashes to kill an imp compared to one shot kills from the slayer's shotgun which has abundant ammo and is what you're probably using most of the time. sword throw is super strong and can rip a horde up easy, that's one thing he has over slayer. otherwise he can't keep up from my experience.

Oh, okay, that makes sense man. That grapple chain can be pretty iffy sometimes. I often forget it's there really because the only things I want to pull are up high and it usually doesn't work at a different elevation. One more idea and I'll quit, adding a little slow drag or that light zoom effect people use for recoil and slowing down the blue hit effect before it gibs zombies/imps/pinkies on mana powered sword slashes. It'd give it a nice powerful feel to it, real crunchy like the heavy hit it is. The little zoom pop effect if it's light wouldn't be distracting and it wouldn't slow down the attack mechanically either.

>> No.4871458

>>4871453
That'd get awful disorientating and nauesating when you're rapidly attacking with the sword in a more frantic melee situation though, plus I'm personally not fond of the weird FOV pull effect some guns use in games.

>> No.4871485

>>4871458
Ah, yeah I guess it would if you're hitting a bunch of monsters in a row with it. I probably don't use the mana slashes as often as you intended people to use them. I nearly always have full mana and am mostly throwing the sword again as soon as it comes back so I can keep punching and throwing.

A short slowdown at the start of the hit and then a speed up to keep the overall same speed might feel good. No zooming there. Reminds me of hitstop in a fighting game or beat em' up but without actually slowing down the action. If you're not a fan of it in general I understand though, you're the boss man in charge. I'd like to learn to mod and tinker around with things like that. Is it frowned upon to mod a mod for your own personal use? I'll have to try learning with the resources posted in the OP when I have free time. How long did it take you to learn? I have no experience with anything technical so I'd be starting from nothing.

Well if you prefer using fists that much you could always just spam lariats when unarmed, those are powerful and give you a use for your sword mana. Tapping reload to crack your knuckles also resets the sword cooldown.

And I don't think it's frowned upon, it's been done before within the community, I kinda just picked this stuff up and rolled with it, now mind you when I started Decorate was the main method of editing weapons and crap, nowadays ZScript is the new hotness, though I don't bother with it myself. Decorate is really easy to pick up and learn, it took me a couple months to start getting comfortable with the basics but I'm still learning stuff to this day and trying to be more efficient.

If you're wanting to play with Decorate, here's some resources you can refer to:

http://gunlabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/welcome-to-new-doom-armory.html

https://zdoom.org/wiki/DECORATE

I also recommend bookmarking Realm667, downloading stuff from there and poking at it to edit stuff for fun, that's what I did when I was just getting started, I made a weaponset out of some Realm667 weapons.

https://www.realm667.com/index.php/en/repository-18489

If you're wanting to work with Zscript, I'm afraid I'm completely clueless there and I'm not sure where you could turn for info on that.

Doom modding is a lot of fun, and I wish you the best of luck if you get into this.

Okay, the balancing is fucked. It's complex Doom levels of bad. But, if you put the highest difficulty on, you get a ''muh tacticool'' type feeling, where everything is deadly so you have to be careful and methodical. If you put on the lower difficulties it's a total power fantasy and you get to blow shit up while having full health constantly.

It's really subjective honestly, if you like feeling overloaded with shit in your face and plenty of stuff to DAKKA away at, it's good.

If you don't like the feeling of barfing up bullets at horrific reskins of doom enemies it probably won't be your cup of tea. Make up your own mind.

Making a total conversion shouldn't really be all that hard, make GZDoom use ROTT's .wads, and if necessary, you manually rebuild the levels.
I mean, you could probably use that Wolf3D TC for partial reference, which would be extremely fitting.

The big question though would be the physics, just how easy would it be to replicate all of ROTT's wildass antics and bullshit with the curren't GZDoom? As I said, this results in one of the commands becoming "sticky" i.e. combining Jump with MoveUp results in either jump stop working after one jump, or Move Up being constantly activated depending on the order, regardless of whetehr the key is still pressed.

If you compare the Samsara version of Caleb to the real deal, you can tell it's off.

Caleb is crazy limber and mobile.
I think the GZDoom program could probably emulate these physics, but it's just that code hasn't been implemented to do so.
There was a quasi-port of Blood based on Duke Nukem 3D, which was widely criticized because among other things, it didn't get Caleb's weird agility down.

There's worse things, like full regen HP.
I can't say that regen to 25 is something I would ever find necessary for Doom though, unless maybe you're playing some kind of map that just doesn't balance well due to the low availability of health. Even then though, I'd just push through.

It's a boss, the biggest, baddest guy in the game, in what way does it seem like a good idea to make it so just a small use of low tier ammo can utterly annihilate him?
Now, I like the idea of rewarding the player for risks, getting this close with a low/mid tier weapon, but you spend way too little.

I think a better idea would be to make headshots on the Cyber not do extra damage, but have the potential of making him enter an extended pain state, giving you opportunity to either keep hitting him, or running for your life.
Kicker would be that at the end of this extended pain state, he like, sprints or otherwise charges at you, which would be really dangerous.

I suppose you could just rename the wads that don't make a whole lot of sense when you download them, but I rarely have problems with wad names not making sense, especially for the mapsets/megawads. I personally keep my wads in folders for mapsets/single levels, gameplay mods, and megawads, with subfolders in each if the mods have multiple wads that need to be loaded to get them to work.

Is there any pattern to making Life Essences drop from killed enemies? Does it depend on the weapon used to kill them or what? I think they're supposed to be Caleb's main source of health, but they seem to drop very rarely.

texture filtering in Quake 2 is still ugly, and the jello models doesn't help either.
in fact, many things in Q2 could be fixed if someone could increase the polygon count a bit to evade that which is something that Q2XP and other ports can do now or add r_scale as quakespasm.

fortunately, now we have the tools to do this, but no one in the community wants to do this, unless they are motivated or want to do this for fun and learn like Q2XP guy, i kinda wish to see more SP Q2maps and a Q2spasm.
