The way I see it, Tech Gone Bad is derivative of Mt.Erebus (which was the precursor to Sandy's citymaps), and Phobos Mission Control is derivative of HeXen (monster closets within monster closets, locations generally morphing, etc). Both smell quite a bit of an attempt at revisionism to me, to be quite honest. In any case, they offer, strangely enough, despite aiming to be way bigger and better, way less novelty than their arguable originals did.

Happy birthday man. Have you played Freedoom? It's good and uses different assets than normal Doom. It has a very surreal style to it and it's fun to play. Your character portrait looks like Bud Bundy from Married With Children though. I definitely recommend giving it a go. They don't offer anything Romero's levels (including his Quake ones and Daikatana's godawful ep1, which he heavily tinkered with) haven't already had. What novelty tech has is on the outside, since Romero hasn't actually ever had a similarly styled "open" map before. However, that novelty very much seems to me to have come from outside. There seems to be a reason for that as well. Mt.Erebus is objectively a historically significant map, not only as the citymaps prototype, but as the first open level in Doom, not to mention as the map that featured rocketjump. It did expend mappers' entire mapping "lexicon", so to speak. Quite a bit. And Romero didn't happen to have anything whatsoever to do with it. However, it appeared only in the final version of Doom, shareware one, naturally, didn't have it. Now, John offers us to pretend for a bit as if ep1 actually contained a similarly styled, from the outside, open map, only without anything that made that openness highly interesting gameplay-wise in Mt.Erebus. That just looks kind of iffy to me, to be quite honest, that's all. What made incompatibly more sense in the original got copied as an empty gimmick. And the same goes for phobos/hexen.

Mt Erebus might be historical, but it still looks ugly and gameplay is nonsensical. Tech Gone Bad and most of Romero’s maps felt like true cinematic journeys even with their flaws like the clusterfuck start to Perfect Hatred or the catwalk areas in Living End. They are still memorable and pleasant to look at.

I also think it was a good idea to make an open level for episode 1 to add a different angle for it. What I don’t like is Romero stopped here and didn’t remake the other maps. Honestly if you play through the entire thing the two new maps will stand out like a sore thumb both aesthetically or gameplay wise.

A new Romero episode with these two new maps would be totally awesome.

For gameplay mods:
Gross Deutschland weapon pack I highly recommend, I only found out about this from a discord but basically it lets you play as Hitler guiding his army and it has rts elements which are pretty fun for a fps. It's incredibly fun and can be used in combination with almost any map to my knowledge.

Doom rady- class based Japanese mod, very fun and I only found out about it 2 days ago thanks to these threads.

Doom zone- another class based mod but this one was inspired by killzone so expect alot of realistic weaponry combined with sci fi here and there.

SLADE is all you need for every modding purpose (except mapping, you want to use Gzdoom Builder for that).

Now, the thing is, do you want to make your skin a skin for Zandronum or just a skin for the mod? because if it's the latter you basically copy the sprites and rename them to PLAYXX (XX being the only part you don't change). GZDoom is surprisingly resource intensive, but it's also not really easy to optimize it without tearing every piece of code out and doing everything over from scratch, so it only gets so much better with a stronger computer.

Having plenty of memory helps, but doesn't make performance issues disappear in certain situations. I went from like 8gb on my old shitass worn out laptop to 12gb, and a much better processor and graphics card, and there's definitely better performance across the board running similar graphical settings, but there's certain things the engine is just going to chug with, such as many monsters doing line of sight checks over a lot of linedefs (so, a VERY detailed map with a lot of monsters).

There's some things which GZDoom actually does stupid though, such as voxels, literally rendering them as individual 1x1x1 polygon cubes, for each individual 'voxel', this eating away dramatically at framerate. There's little reason to use voxels the way the engine handles it, as you could just as well just make a fake voxel model and load that instead, with far less taxing on performance.
I'm not sure if this is the case because Graf is lazy, or because implementing true voxel support would somehow be extremely bothersome and require more work than it's arguably worth, but I'd flip a coin on this one.

There's some area similar to this part in Ground Zero too I believe which is an escape from a prison and that's actually my favorite part. But this area in Reckoning has nice tunnels to explore, its cozy and cramped and will choke you and has plenty of little hidden items, and the areas are designed well.

Forget which one of these expansions has the Green Passkey but, it has a water tube area later on in the expansion, some kind of water treatment plant chock full of gladiators. And that too is also one of my favorite FPS areas.

He actually did have some input, on the account that half of everyone at iD at that time would pull varying degrees of duty as Ideas Guy, as they were just these couple of dudes making this game together.
Romero was the main ideas guy, but Tom, Cloud, Adrian and Sandy, all contributed something here and there. Even Carmack made some minor note every now and then.

The Arch-Vile was partially Sandy's idea, for instance, him and Adrian worked him out (with Punchatz making the latex model, of course), and he also pushed for some of the vaguely Lovecraftian things (to Romero's delight).

Silent Hill was only partially scary, mostly the parts that make you run because you absolutely cant stand your ground (after the twinfeeler battle, running on the catwalks above the darkness... or just before the lighthouse, all those fucking dogs).

Resident Evil 1 and 2 are pretty damn scary in terms of how close you have to cut it though, just how close it forces your face against the grinding wheel.

No, see, the point of sticking to the chainsaw is challenge.

It has a mighty DPS, but to use it, you have to get in melee range, and while this is easy for low tier mooks, for higher tier ones like hellknights and mancubodes, this is actually really hard, because they react so fast with melee and they're hard to dodge.
So using the chainsaw, you feel powerful mowing down low tier mooks, but you feel like a goddamn god when you manage to destroy a large demon with the saw and the saw alone, without being killed, especially if there were more than one of them.

The Doom 3 shotgun is inexcusably fucking bad though, especially comparing to how the classic Doom shotgun actually can pattern respectably at 'across the street' distances.

Actually, to me, they have a great appeal in the sense of a B horror movie. Very entertaining and charming.

I had completely forgotten just how creepy and amazing the first FEAR was. the lowpoly graphics and stilted animations were super fucking effective for conveying that uncanny vibe they went after.

There was plenty of ammo, I remember seeing 2 boxes of shotgun shells (2800 damage), and if you can get those shotgunner platforms to lower you get a bunch more shells from that. Plasma rifle with 40 cells and maybe even more cells I dont remember.

Most dangerous part about e3m2 was the shotgunners and the cacos (close action means possible caco bites). Also except for spikes getting in the way the map was close combat so berserk really destroys monsters in that map. There's also an ambush which could get dicey but the only real danger there is the pinkies.

Don't detail a single room until you have flow figured out. Don't have things that look like you should be able to jump on them (or walk up, in vanilla Doom's case) but can't. Invisible walls are almost always annoying. Multiple floor heights in a single room in real life is annoying, but adds interest in vidya games. Back tracking is usually annoying unless you produce more gameplay. Switch hunts (threw a switch - what did it do!?) suck... You should usually see the door before you see the key, and it's often good to add a new route to get back to it once you get the key. Realistic environments suck in Doom.

How do you make touch controls not terrible when playing Doom on your phone? I'm working night shift at this place and my whole job is walking around every 30 minutes and logging meter readings in different rooms. That's it. I'm trying to play Freedoom on my phone and the controls through touch are so awful even easy difficulty is tough as nails. The controls are the most difficult enemy.

The platforming is waaaay too much, especially with GZDoom's slippery physics, coupled with insta-death pits. Another thing is that some times stuff that looks like it should not result in instant death does. In canyon levels there are "dark void" pits that are obvious instadeath, but then there is a river that does not look like it, but is.

It was much better handled in Strange Eons and other such maps, where a platforming error would just send you to the beginning of the challenge.

If you want to punish the player, maybe make them take 5 or 10 damage before teleporting them off to the beginning of the section.
Instadeath is so frustrating it just incites player to savescum and makes them feel frustration both at the mapper and at their own savescum.
This on the whole completely devalues the challenge of the platforming making it tedious instead of enjoyable.
