software mode is very taxing on a CPU and opengl is very light on GPU so you should stick to opengl on a toaster if it supports it

you can also configure hardware renderer so it doesn't filter texture and doesn't bend enemy textures when you look at them from higher ground, just like software renderer

Lately ive only been playing Blood because I never played it before. I killed Tcernobog and now im on another episode, so that doesnt make too much sense. Ive got too much ammo for everything and im still killing everything, and infighting isnt even a meme in this game really.

Ive got a doom mod thats took apart like something smashed on a workbench and im not really interested in playing doom stuff until I get it in some shade of working order, and I havent even touched it in a couple weeks.

Arcane Dimensions has gotten real old for me even though I havent beaten all the levels (especially that snow level). Somehow with their being a catastrophic number of secrets in some of the maps I think this was to help with replayability but it had the exact opposite effect on me - with them being so hard to find I dont even want to bother with the rest and id just want to see some Wiki page with screenshots showing me where they all are.

I respect the amount of work he puts into things, and on a technical scale it's all quite pretty and well coded with lots of features and etc, etc.
But they're just not fun for me to play. If there's no challenge, it's boring. The beauty of Doom's gameplay isn't just with the weapons, it's how the enemies come together to form interesting encounters and dangers to the player. Being able to blow through it all in just a couple clicks is neat at first but gets very boring very quickly.

I think Archviles should be Revenants, they have the stature to deliver the swings and if they fired homing fireballs like the nitrogolems from heretic they would fit the role of revenants perfectly. Their white skin aesthetic would also be creepy to encounter in large numbers like this.

Meanwhile the Revenants should be Archviles, just remove the armor jacket and give them more reddish/black necromancy style power effects. Run around raising monsters from the dead and blinking-red-fire cursing the player.

They're absolutely unconventional compared to the rest of the monsters, and completely fucking change any battle they're added in, because you have to account for their unique behaviors. The Arch-Vile especially, as he makes himself among the highest priority of your targets, as he's so fast and dangerous on his own, and also because he can undo any killing you've done nearby, killing him can be a race against time, to avoid getting fucked.

I love the challenge and complexity they add to the game, and I love their spooky aesthetics. I think they're ultimately a novelty, seemingly suffer from the same feature creep other mods fall victim to, simply being full of many little things you'll likely never bother with because you can murder just fine with the one option you've committed to, which I think holds back these kinds of mods to simpler ones. You can definitely try and balance the table with other monster packs but then it ends up being something like the Doom equivalent of MH Frontier with ridiculous power creep on both ends. At least with something like DRLA, all that player power is something you have to figure out how to get and the player has some imposed limitations.

While RO is rather inconsistent with visual design between weapons, the overall production value of Guncaster and Trailblazer is really what sets them apart from the other clusterfuck mods that throw a lot of things at you, overall looking a lot more consistent graphically and technically impressive. But both also feel like that they should have their own total conversion and set of enemies designed around them.

I would personally like to see more toned-down versions of the two with the power more reigned-in, still keeping in core features but trimming the fat. There's no keeping it to Doom levels of power with the concept behind Pillowblaster stuff, but with some tweaking there's plenty of monster mods around now to keep close to.

Mods: DAKKA pistols are good. HND revolver isn't that strong, but can be rapidfired to kill a couple of imps quick, also special attack. I don't play all that many mods recently so I don't remember much else.

Games:
Unreal's Dispersion pistol is done very well in that regard: It's a bit stronger than pistol, but fires projectiles instead of hitscan - good for short range. Can be charged for more burst damage for ambush or dealingwith turret enemies, ammo aren't infinite but regenerates, and the less you have the faster they regen. Can be upgraded to the point where it rivals the power of rocket launcher, at the expense of increased ammo drain and slower projectile speed.

Blood : flare gun (especially its altfire) works well for putting down zombies for good - no chance of them rising back after being burned.

Hexen, wizards wand is useful in case of centaurs due to its piercing capabilities.

Quake: some people use shotgun for snipinig due to relatively low spread and fast fire rate.

this is the answer im liking best so far, possibly in addition reducing health and ammo drops in order to further incentivize the player to use his sidearm when possible. But then i would become concerned with the player just using the pistol to print as many drops as he needs. With regular health pickups, theres only so much in a level, and that puts a good incentive on the player to not take hits.

Quake is pretty good. Enemies are a bit spongy and some levels are a bit generic and tedious. But it has great atmosphere and when the game flows it flows well. I recommend making sure you have the musics playing, you are playing on hard (increases the amount of enemies) and you don't autism over 100% ing the maps on your first run. Also, know that the big white guys that shoot lightning are resistant to explosives.

Unreal has good soundtrack but the gameplay is kinda arse. Pretty much everything it might be legitly praised for were done better in the console shooter hit Halo less than two years after. Expect boring level design, generic aesthetics, dated scripted sequences, and guns that don't feel strong.

Unreal has great level design and aestethics, at least the first 2/3 of the game, next to no scripted sequences - I play Unreal regularily and the only 3 I can remember are "Skaarj killing people behind locked door while you listening", but that's hardly a sequence, "A soldier getting thrown at the wall" in second level and "Skaarj introduction" though those are same level of complexity as HL's "elevator kills scientists" sequence. That's literally all I could remember.
And if 6-barreled rocket launcher that can shoot all 6 rockets at once does not feel powerful to you, I don't know what can.

Compare the lowest-tier enemies. Former Humans you can easily kill with a single single-barrel shotgun blast. Knights on the other hand take multiple double-barrel blasts. Chaingunners take on double-barrel, Death Knights take multiple rockets. The only enemies with comparable health & damage are the Caco and Scrag. But besides that the enemies in Quake without a doubt have more health than Doom's. And this was a conscious, necessary choice. Computers couldn't handle many 3D models on-screen at once, so the individual enemies were beefed up to compensate.

first off, stop thinking of the weapons in quake as directly equivalent to their doom versions. the quake shotgun is not the doom shotgun, the quake shotgun is your pistol. the double barrel shotgun is your workhorse shotgun, the one that kills grunts, rotties, and rotfish in one blast and does enough damage to enforcers and knights that a second close range ssg blast will not only kill them but gib them as well. death knights die in two direct rockets and some splash damage from a third, with three direct rockets turning them into giblets; that isn't a very long time at all, as your rocket and grenade launchers are the real workhorse weapons of quake given how much ammo you get for them and their extremely fast fire rate compared to doom's RL.

even the more common tanky enemies like ogres die to two direct rockets, an intentional design decision as they also drop two rockets on death, and those two rockets aren't enough to gib them and make them not drop their backpack- a zero-sum enemy where you can either kill them more slowly to use their ammo for other enemies, or take out your own grenade launcher and kill them very quickly but not gain any ammo from the encounter. also, NOTHING in quake is as durable as a baron and nothing comes even close to a cyberdemon or spider, so any discrepancy in lower-tier enemies is made up for by the toughest standard enemy (the shambler) still dying in just a couple seconds of nailgun fire and/or a reasonable amount of shells.

What exactly that means in the context of PiD and Halo is that you are meant to constantly question, what the intended way to proceed is, in order to get to the next checkpoint in one piece. In that sense each arena serves as a puzzle of sorts (although that only really comes into play in Halo on Heroic and Legendary).

Among similar games, though, I vastly prefer Far Cry 1 to both PiD and Halo 1.

Guncaster's weapons are so powerful it's not even fun for me. I'll have to give it another shot with Custom Doom and try to fiddle around with the damage scaler and weaken myself down some. Heavy and bulky, the folding stock isn't particularly comfortable.
The semi automatic mode doesn't like anything that isn't regular powered buckshot, which is what the pump-mode is for; low powered loads, but in pump-mode you also literally pump against the spring of the gas piston.

The semi-auto mode needs its recoil buffer, a piece of neoprene in the back of the receiver, for the bolt to hit against, without this buffer (either absent or dried and cracked out), the bolt will batter, and gradually stretch the receiver.
Also, the older lever safeties have been known to actually discharge the gun when accentuated, so either don't touch that safety at all, or get the safety upgraded to a cross button safety that doesn't do this.

But, as long as the gun hasn't been sitting in a shed for a decade and the buffer hasn't disintegrated over time (in which case, just run it in pump-mode), and you then just run decently powered 00 buck loads, the gun should work fine.

If you think Unreal is creative, then you just ain't familiar with the sources it's ripping off. Plenty of old pulpy scifi literature with the tone they went towards with Unreal, while Halo is taking cues from slightly fresher military scifi. Halo's environment however feels a lot more natural and immersive due to having some sort of visual cohesion. Unreal reeks of having some newage weed-smoker director's initial "vision" and then bunch of juvenile directors cramming it full of random shit they thought looks cool.

While it's true that Halo's aesthetic finesse and level design got worse as the series progressed, the first game is indubitably a masterpiece, one of the few truly good singleplayer fps games between Quake 1 and FEAR.

Is there a good megawad with not too rough difficulty designed around pistol starts? I need one I can just pick a random map and jump right into without feeling like I'm gimping myself because it wasn't designed for pistol start. Nice visuals are a plus, colorful maps with purples and such are a favorite of mine. I liked Stardate 20X6 and 7 visually but they were too hard for me.

I remember there was a recall for some safety issue for the Ruger Mk.IV, but I don't remember exactly what. They're still selling them, so I'm assuming it was an identified error in a batch.
For the SPAS12, this has only been observed on *some* guns, not all guns with the older lever safety exhibit this problem, though some guns which didn't use to, then did. The crossbolt safety (which Franchi would offer for free, for a time after the lever safety issue was discovered) never does it.

Goes to show that you shouldn't trust *only* the safety on a firearm, always keep it pointed in the direction you rather would want it to be if it would ever fire (as in, somewhere where nobody gets hurt, or optionally, always against the enemy).
Guns don't suddenly fire by themselves, but a defective safety could possibly make the sear trip. Generally only exhibited on either not so well thought out guns, or not so well manufactured guns, or guns which are both.

I don't think any of this makes the SPAS12 a terrible shotgun though. It works fine. Assuming it was the only shotgun I had to work with, I could deal with it. If the buffer is new, I can feed it buck and slug, and if the buffer is worn out or missing, I could still run it manually, even if it wouldn't be as fast as I'd want.
It's dated and quirky, but it's still a 12 Gauge shotgun, and it certainly has unrivaled aesthetics.
