Diablo 1 has been reversed engineered. The source code is a mess right now because of how it was reversed engineered and there is an effort right now to make it human readable and much cleaner. You still need a copy of the game to play it.

Like with eduke32 or with the dozen or so source ports for doom and quake, devilution once completed can be used as a base for all kinds of mods or new games. I'm pretty excited for what will happen with this.

That's what I'm hoping for. A new golden era of Diablo would be amazing. After seeing all the things that could be done to d2 in the median mod I bet we'll see some pretty cool shit with this.

There are literally hundreds of source ports by this point.

The game is a mess because it's partial compiled in assembly, because when the project started, it's creators only knew assembly language.
They later learned, I think it was C, and kinda merged the two into a working mishmash of awesome.

is it possible to achieve smooth scrolling in diablo without using that bullshit mod that changes everything?

Too bad this thing doesn't alter the fps because 20fps induces a horrible stutter.

Only thing I'd look forward to is more modern OS support. Other than that I think people will just Diablo 2'fy the original Diablo 1, which seems like what a few other mods for Diablo 1 do.

Yeah, same here. Also very interested in vanilla multiplayer being possible with relative ease, hopefully. Missed out on all that when the game was current.

D1 was a fucking blast when the multiplayer wasn't a huge cheat-fest, and even I played it at the tail-end. I always preferred its simplicity and dungeon crawling over D2.

Also there are unofficial patches for D1/hellfire that does the same thing.

this, instead of embracing the crudeness of D1 game design they just slap QOL fixes until it becomes unrecognizable from other hacky whacky games

my biggest hope is The Hell author moves his codebase over to devilution source code and it's gonna really become a Median XL of Diablo1

Devilution is to be strictly vanilla but he did announce a side project which may do what you want.

My only issue with D1 is that it just kind of ends once you defeat Diablo, and Nightmare/Hell difficulties are meant for multiplayer. Since I've beaten it with all the classes once, there's not really much of a draw to go back to it again without post-game content. I guess I should try something like Ironman.

I just hope I can use Windows 7 forever, to be honest. It's much more stable than XP, still has a good compatibility with older software with some tweaking, and just werks. They turned it into bloatware since then.
