It's still one of the best games ever.
What makes Doom so appealing?

>> No.4856318

Simplicity.

You run, shoot, and get to the end of the mission, and the secrets in game are there waiting if you want to.

But Doom spiced things up more in terms of level design and weapons. Wolfenstein 3D is a classic and all, but there's only so much you can do with open rooms and long, flat hallways.

Overall, it's simple but not too simple.

mainly the player movement. doomguy moves at something like 90mph and theres no animation lag like most games today so you can run around and kill things as fast as you can think. its also quite satisfying to kill the monsters.

Doom is a dungeon crawler dressed up as a fps, you're constantly looking for keys and exploring a big ass level. Most modern fps games are simpler.

It has better level design than most shooters, and the best community of mappers and modders.

It has everything that needs to be there for a good FPS: Enemies, Level design, sounds, atmosphere, and absolutely nothing extra.
It is the purest FPS ever made.

The ones that came before lacked some of the necessary things (Wolf lacked variety in level design for instance). The ones that came after added in unnecesary things or extra bullshit.

Quake adds only a little bit in form of jumping, true 3D and verticality, but that IMO also not 100% necessary for a good shooter.

Good read: http://vectorpoem.com/news/?p=74

But that's just the beginning. Books could be written about why Doom is good.

One thing I'll add is that Doom's simple enemy AI and enemy notification logic has a tendency to create interesting emergent behavior, especially when there are large groups of enemies. The in-fighting is brilliant. In large levels with large numbers of enemies, there is a real sense of facing off against entire armies of enemies, with a "depth of battle" feel - the various enemy weapon types create interesting layers of engagement as you simultaneously fight nearby and far-off enemies, and the enemy in-fighting, various flying projectiles, combat sounds, etc. create a sense of being on a real battlefield facing somewhat intelligent enemies. I know that the Doom enemy AI is probably extremely simple, but it is extremely well chosen - complex behavior emerges from the simple code.

This, the PC RPG influence of the time, the fast gameplay, the technical trickery they had going on to simulate 3D movement makes it feel both old and new at the same time, it is simple but there is this feel that there is something that you don't quite get about the whole thing. The first game is very aesthetic at times too, Doom 2 ironically feels more dated to me than the first one because the scenery isn't as appealing and the levels got a tad too big at times, making it feel more a bit more unforgiving with your progress, something characteristic of older games.

Is playing DOOM on Z supposed to look grainier than GZ? The former feels more classic and I personally like it better, but I hope I'm not just playing it in poorly rendered graphics.

>> No.4864806

>>4864764
If you want vanilla compatibility, use Chocolate/Crispy Doom to see how it should look. Mods that alter the behavior of the game (not just graphics) are generally made on top of GZDoom extensive extendability extensions. ZDoom is not developed any more, and some of the latest mods already need the latest GZDoom features. You can make OpenGL renderer look good by not using modern screen resolutions and disabling texture filtering.

The feel that you have really run through those halls, turning your head nervously all the time.

‘Doctor, do you treat the fear of open spaces?’
‘Yes, of course.’
‘And the fear of closed spaces?’
‘Absolutely.’
‘You see, my son has both…’
‘Ah! We don't treat doomers.’

Always thought Quake was superior to Doom. Sure, the innovations at the time in 92' (or was it 93'?) when Doom came out were exceptional and groundbreaking, but Quake always felt a touch above from the fantasy of the weapons, the atmosphere and the architecture in the world. I thought secrets in Quake were consistently more cleverly implemented then they were in Doom.

4chan is a highly informal forum were informal and fallacious arguments are employed frequently. So here's how it's supposed to work:

> You only like the game because nostalgia
This is lazy question-begging and contains no specific criticism of the game. The correct informal response to this 'argument' is:

> You're a retard with no taste
This accusation is at least confirmed by the evidence you provided, even if it still has nothing to do with the game itself.

There's always so much fresh stuff to play because of the long standing modding community. Tech is of an old bygone era such that level/asset creation could still be done by one person or a small team.
Enough variety in the enemies (After 2), weapons all have a strategy and a natural rhythm.
You can play it on A N Y T H I N G with a silky smooth framerate.

This is the one. Everything is balanced to perfection - smoothness of movement, the way weaons work and how enemies react. Levels are complex but also simple at the same time (because the game is in 2d after all). It's combination of perfect things.

>> No.4867757

I would love to see 2d Doom but with DOOM2016 graphics, all in 3d with shaders etc but movement is same as in original Doom. Too bad this wont ever happen though unless someone does some serious work.
Question: I have seen some youtube videos of original Doom running with Doom 3 models. I believe it was with Doomsday engine. Where can I get the models? I tried to search but nothing really came up.
One more interesting things was Doom 3 textures converted to Doom format so they are usable in map editor - https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/92309-doom-3-textures-for-doom/
But this is not what I'm looking for..

It's just a solid, elegant design. Weapons are reasonably well balanced, they enemies stand out and are largely not annoying to deal with, movement is smooth, environments are engaging as gameplay environments, and the visuals are all distinctive and easy to work with.
