I still need to beat SMTI. Got to the dungeon inside the heroine's mind and quit. Love SMT and have beat most of the modern games but as muchbas I hate to say it I just get frustrated with the older games. I read awhile ago someone was planning on porting the Aeon Genesis translations to the ps1 version which I've heard is a bit less annoying with less encounters and other updated asoects.
>>4845247
I remember some interview where they mentioned they added that just for the shock value. Honestly its amazing how effective it was.

If you're familiar with retro, first-person dungeon crawlers, sure. SMT is kind of brutal without a guide though, it never, ever tells you where the fuck to go. Aside from that it's an amazing game. If you're not comfortable with retro first-person dungeon crawlers, you might want to start with Soul Hackers on the 3DS, or a not retro entry (which are largely 3rd person), to get 'into' the series. There's a shit ton of Megaten games, so there's bound to be something you'll love, if you're into JRPGs that are all about gameplay and atmosphere with a loose story.

Oh it's also worth noting that the Gideon translation of SMT is fucking awful, but it's all we've got aside from the iOS version, which is quite good, but will only run on iOS 10 or lower. I beat SMT on my phone.

Its fine to start with the first one.

For the SNES one, there are a couple of rom hacks that are worth patching in. First of all is the translation fix, which fixes a bunch of bugs and a particularly nasty softlock in the aeon genesis translation:
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/2616/

Second of all is this nice QOL hack which lets you open the automap with the R button instead of having to go through a menu (which SMT2 does without patching). It works with the patched roms, so you can just throw it on there.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/907/

One thing to keep in mind is that the SNES version of the game has an absolutely ABSURD encounter rate.

Oh, the KMT version of MT is a nice upgrade (saving instead of passwords is great, for instance). But the KMT version of MTII looks, and sounds way worse than the Famicom version and it's a damn shame. It's great that we can play it in english at all, but the FC version is probably the greatest RPG on that platform, so it's a shame it's only partially translated.

The graphics just lose a lot of 'atmosphere' and 'feel' due to it being a pretty rush job port, built on a stock engine. Really, the graphics are pretty subjective. That said, the sound is not subjective. The Famicom version uses a special NAMCOT sound generator and it is quite literallyt one of the best soundtracks on the console, it's simply amazing. The KMT version just uses generic, run-of-the-mill SNES sample-sets and has no balls at all.

I won't argue against the music, the famicom version definitely has a cooler feel to it, but I have no idea what you're talking about for the art.

The art of KMT is pretty damn good. Just look at this background for example. The various graffiti gives it so much character that a black background wouldn't.

If anything I say KMT is better for the gameplay advancements alone but still, KMT is nowhere near as bad as purists claim it is.

Are SMT I & II worth getting into if I'm used to the more refined later titles on PS2 and 3DS? I hear the gameplay of I & II mainly consists of auto-battle.

>> No.4854494

>>4853962
The biggest problem is the absurd encounter rate. It's classic tile based movement and every step has a 30% chance of triggering random battles (plural because you usually have to fight three different battles in the row).
The only way to fight them without going insane is to use auto-battle every time while holding the fast-forward button.

You got bigger balls than me, man. I've beaten the KMT version, but even as a huge Famicom fag the FC version is obscenely brutal. The password system certainly doesn't help. I've actually been planning to sit down and play it with graph paper, but I've only mapped the very first floor so far. Kind of waiting to buy an AVS so I can actually map at my desk instead of on a TV tray with my current rig.
