I have been reading about Famicom exclusive games lately and there are a lot of them.
Talk about or recommend Famicom exclusive side scrollers and platformers.
Not looking for RPGs right now.

Samurai Pizza Cats, Kid Dracula, Wai Wai Wolrd 2, Moon Crystal and Splatterhouse Wankapu Graffiti are all really good.

I also like Choujin Sentai Jetman, a short and easy but fun game. I could swear the game used the same "engine" as Shatterhand.

Speaking of Shatterhand, its Famicom counterpart, Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain, is worth checking out as it has many differences from the western verison included an exclusive stage.

I also really like Getsu Fūma Den. It's obvious the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle used this game's "engine" too, so it's like TMNT but better in many ways. Make sure to play with a translation and to use a torch in the fake 3D cave mazes.

Spartan X-2 is also really fun, a single plane beat-em-up with fair difficulty.

There is also Adventure Island IV if you're into the series.

On FDS there is Almana no Kiseki: Castlevania meet Indiana Jones.

If you're into puzzle games, Moia Kun is a great puzzle platformer with a nice and fair difficulty curve. If you know Toki Tori it seems obvious to me they were inspired by that game.

There is also Power Blazer, the game Power Blade was based on, but it's very different from Power Blade in many ways

>> No.4833479

There is also Layla, but I'm don't find it that good personally, and Penguin Dream Story with a rather unique mechanic/story where you're supposed to lose weight and avoid food.

Not "exclusives" but the famicom versions of Ninja Gaiden 3 and Bayou Billy (Mad City) have much easier difficulty on famicom. This is also true for Castlevania 3 to a lesser extent.

Also not "famicom", but "regional exclusives" nonetheless: Astérix and The Smurfs were only released in a few PAL countries. They're short and fun platformers.
Gimmick! aka Mr. Gimmick was also only released in Japan and in Scandinavia. Famicom version is superior.

Almost forgot: Armadillo is very overlooked but very solid. The only complain is that a lot of levels are very samey, or even the same iirc, kinda like for Captain America and The Avengers on NES where you get the pleasure to replay the same stages.

Came to post this one. Excellent game.
I also reccommend Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3, it's a bit like Mega Man, but with a baton and a more bizarre approach.

If cancelled US versions still count:
Bio Senshi Dan (aka Bashi Bozook), Ninja Jajamaru (Squashed).
Maze of Galious too and Goemon 2.

Only in scandinavia, a very limited run, and barely anything was changed, not even the text, besides some anti piracy code removed and worse audio.
It might as well have been a Japan only game.

>>4833469
Power Blazer has cartoony sprites (which work somewhat better for the game) but is worse in every single aspect. It's a shitty platformer. Not even LJN games would have pixel perfect jumps and leaps of faith like in it.

You mean Kyatto Ninden Teyandee?

Not trying to be a smart-alex, just saying that if OP searches for "Samurai Pizza Cats" on a rom site, she probably wouldn't find it....

Why did Kid Dracula never got the love it deserved? I always hated that Quiz (the statue of liberty? gives you) in the Famicom game because I couldn't read it. What's up with that part anyways?

I remember that.
The multi episode epic Mario series stuck for the most part in China.
He becomes a parasitic organism and hijacks other mascot platformer heroes and pops out of their heads.
It was a unique take on horror, and thought-provoking subversive exploration of how dispensable humans are, for a then immature medium. It's a shame Nintendo tried their best to not only censor this but also cowardly shy from exploring those serios themes.

I love how in Mario 14 you can sometimes see Yanchamaru's face replacing Mario's during certain moves, like the slide or the baton spin.
It's very surreal. You're playing as a monster that shapeshifts his own head.

Is this the inspiration of Yoshi's Island?

We could make a chart of retro platformers games.
