4836509 No.4836509 [Reply] [Original]

Why does the movement in Quake feel so slippery and awkward? It's as if I'm on ice and constantly overreaching. Maybe it's input lag and maybe it was always like this and I'm just remembering wrong, but is there any way to fix this?

Quake 2 doesn't feel like this (at least not to this extent). Quake 3 doesn't feel like this at all. Doom and all the mods I've tried with it doesn't feel like this at all. Modern FPSs don't feel like this either.

I'm using the GOG "Quake - The Offersing" version (basically GLQuake if I'm not mistaken).

Most people actually really like the movement, so I don't know what to tell you. And I agree that you should use the source port if you aren't already.

>> No.4836557

I'm trying winquake now (it's included in the default install) and the movement is much better, but I can't get the resolution to be in 4:3 aspect ratio.

OP here, I got a bit distracted from the thread, but I fixed the problem.

>>4836681
That's what I did. I tried WinQuake as it was already installed along with GLQuake via GOG's installer. I get some weird color glitches for a few seconds when launching the game, but other than that, it works fine. The controls are good, no more lag/awkwardness, although I'm not sure what caused it in the first place. I fixed the 4:3 aspect ratio through the nvidia control panel. Now the game works like a charm and looks/feels old school.

Now I just have to figure out how to play the mission packs.

what i do to load up mission packs is just type in "game hipnotic" or "game rogue" in the console on startup
its just whatever the expansion folder in your quake directory is called

Quake's movement:
1) It's based on acceleration, not a direct amount of movement per button press. So, the ms difference between button presses can attribute to how much you move. That is why platforming sections in this game usually don't base themselves on pure accuracy, it's not always easily achievable. What this does mean though, is that it can be really precise if you're good and know how to move correctly and how much your movements will affect where you go.

2) Sometimes certain ports fuck up your movements. Just play with either WinQuake or Quakespasm. Probably Quakespasm, that's the recommended/best one on offer.

>Now I just have to figure out how to play the mission packs.
I'm sure that modern source ports offer different ways to do it but the surefire way that will work with every port because it's right from DOS Quake is this; from the command-line run
>quake -game hipnotic -hipnotic
or
>quake -game rogue -rogue
Replace 'quake' with your source port .exe.

This works fine, thank you!

Just -hipnotic and -rogue is fine for the expansion packs. But to launch user mods you have to use -game modname.

>> No.4841027

Not in DOS Quake 1.08. -hipnotic and -rogue do nothing but load the HUD changes on their own. If they load the mods as well nowadays then that's just source port behaviour.

I just finished the two mission packs and holy shit, they were amazing! I remember playing the original Quake about 20 years ago when I was a kid and I occasionally played it again every now and then, but I have no idea why I never tried the mission packs. They were absolutely great and I enjoyed them even more than the "base" game (more variety in weapons/monsters/maps, also more ammo for nailguns and thunderbolt, no need to use shotguns and rockets all the time)

Are there any "unofficial" map packs I can try? Sort of like WAD files for Doom.

DP isn't bad when you have lighting built for the map, though you really need to also install the higher polycount models or it'll look weird. Even so, most of the map geometry is flat, but there's a few redesigns that add more detailed brushwork and some clutter here and there to enhance the look.

I know some people get upset because a lot of guys suck his dick, but sock makes some pretty good maps. They've got a lot of advanced brushwork and some more experimental sort of gameplay sometimes, so it might not feel exactly like Quake in all aspects.

For example, I liked his 1000 Cuts map, it's a single map, but you play through it three different ways to open the door to the final boss. At times, it feels sort of like a proof of concept, but a very neat one at that.

I think the lighting is, models might be seperate but were on the same page last I remember, so most people probably got them.

It's more an issue with installing it correctly, it's easy to put them in the wrong directory if you're not sure what you're doing. I had them in the id1 folder for a long time, but I think they might go somewhere else.

I see this thread's still up, so I guess I'll go ahead and ask: what other map packs should I get?

What are the most noteworthy and essential maps worth trying if you're completely new to non-vanilla Quake?

This is a screenshot from my launcher. So far I've enjoyed all of the maps here, but I'd really like to try something with more weapons and perhaps a greater variety of monsters as well.

The dirty secret of Quake engines is that WinQuake works better than all of them to this day, unless you're using post-7 Windows (and why would you?).
There's really nothing as solid and comfy as Chocolate Doom in the Quake community, they just make shitty GLQuake improvements that can't even scale the interface properly.
Can you believe that QuakeSpasm didn't support the original weapon positioning until the latest version? The weapons would always look buried under the status bar. And you still have to enable it with a console command (r_viewmodel_quake 1) instead of being an easy option.

The only really good "faithful port" is Mark V's Winquake version, which can be configured to look and feel properly without much hassle, and supports the mp3 tracks like other modern ports. There's also a modified WinQuake that does the same, but is buried on some message board I believe.

Yeah I'm so unreasonable, I actually want the port of game to look and play like the original game. Holy shit! I mean, obviously all those hours put into coding, all those modern 3D renderers and multiplatform capabilities can't compare to the impossibly herculean effort to make the game look like original Quake.

Stop making excuses for engine developers, they could easily give you vanilla-like options, they just don't give a fuck and perpetuate bad behavior.

You need to play DOS Quake if you need a 100% authentic experience. Even WinQuake had a lot of changes, e.g. there's a couple of maps on Quaddicted that can be completed only in DOS Quake because e.g. jumping out of water in non-DOS ports had a different jump height.
